Shear strength degradation due to flexural ductility demand in circular RC columns

An analytical model was developed to estimate the shear-strength degradation and the residual capacity of circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to seismic action. Background Maternal–embryonic crosstalk between the endometrium and the preimplantation embryo is required for normal pregnancy. Our previous results demonstrated that maternal microRNAs secreted into the endometrial fluid, specifically miR-30d, act as a transcriptomic regulator of the preimplantation embryo by the maternal intrauterine environment. Identification of a plasminogen-binding motif in PAM, a bacterial surface protein.

Surface-associated plasmin(ogen) may contribute to the invasive properties of various cells. Analysis of plasmin(ogen)-binding surface proteins is therefore of interest. The N-terminal variable regions of M-like (ML) proteins from five different group A streptococcal serotypes (33, 41, 52, 53 and 56) exhibiting the plasminogen-binding phenotype were cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant proteins all bound plasminogen with high affinity. The binding involved the kringle domains of plasminogen and was blocked by a lysine analogue, 6-aminohexanoic acid, indicating that lysine residues in the M-like proteins participate in the interaction. Gata4 Blocks Somatic Cell Reprogramming By Directly Repressing Nanog

Abstract Somatic cells can be reprogrammed to induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells by ectopic expression of the four factors Oct4, Klf4, Sox2, and Myc. Here, we investigated the role of Gata4 in the reprogramming process and present evidence for a negative role of this family of transcription factors in the induction of pluripotency. Coexpression of Gata4 with Oct4, Klf4, and Sox2 with or without Myc in mouse embryonic fibroblasts greatly impaired reprogramming and endogenous Nanog expression. Weighted pointwise Hardy inequalities

We introduce the concept of a visual boundary of a domain �¶ �¼ Rn and show that the weighted Hardy inequality  �¶ |u|pd�¶ �A.p  C  �¶ |�Þu|pd�¶ �A, where d�¶(x) = dist(x, �Ý�¶), holds for all u �¸ C �� 0 (�¶) with exponents �A < �A0 when the visual boundary of �¶ is sufficiently large. Here �A0 = �A0(p, n, �¶) is explicit, essentially sharp, and may even be greater than p . 1, which is the known bound for smooth domains. For instance, in the case of the usual von Koch snowflake domain the sharp bound is shown to be �A0 = p . 2 + �E, with �E = log 4/ log 3. These results are based on new pointwise Hardy inequalities.

Magneto-optical linear dichroism in threshold photoemission electron microscopy of polycrystalline Fe films.

Magnetic linear dichroism in threshold photoemission has been exploited to obtain magnetic contrast in a photoemission electron microscope using a mercury arc lamp. The dichroism at threshold can be described similar to the magneto-optical Kerr effect in the region of visible light. The asymmetry of electron intensity observed for a 100 nm polycrystalline Fe film on silicon is A=(0.37+/-0.05)%. The asymmetry occurs for the geometry of the transverse Kerr effect. For unpolarized light the asymmetry was about half the value observed for linearly polarized light. Threshold photoemission microscopy has a large potential for high resolution magnetic domain imaging with fast data acquisition.

Application of time domain induced polarization to the mapping of lithotypes in a landfill site

A direct current (DC) resistivity and time domain induced polarization (TDIP) survey was undertaken at a decommissioned landfill site situated in Hørløkke, Denmark, for the purpose of mapping the waste deposits and to discriminate important geological units that control the hydrology of the surrounding area. A Study on the Propagation of Plane Stress Waves across the Thickness of a Plate by the Method of Analytic Continuation in Time

The interaction of plane tension/compression waves propagating within a plate perpendicularly to its surface is considered. The analytic solution is obtained by a modified method of characteristics for the one-dimensional wave equation used in problems on an impact of a rigid body on the surface of a plate. The displacements, velocities, and stresses in the plate are determined by the edge disturbance caused by the initial velocity and the stationary force field of masses of the striker and the plate.
