Sharp Poincaré inequalities in a class of non-convex sets
2018
Let $gamma$ be a smooth, non-closed, simple curve whose image is symmetric with respect to the $y$-axis, and let $D$ be a planar domain consisting of the points on one side of $gamma$, within a suitable distance $delta$ of $gamma$. Denote by $mu_1^{odd}(D)$ the smallest nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue having a corresponding eigenfunction that is odd with respect to the $y$-axis. If $gamma$ satisfies some simple geometric conditions, then $mu_1^{odd}(D)$ can be sharply estimated from below in terms of the length of $gamma$ , its curvature, and $delta$. Moreover, we give explicit conditions on $delta$ that ensure $mu_1^{odd}(D)=mu_1(D)$. Finally, we can extend our bound on $mu_1^{odd}(D)$ to a …
Boundary Regularity for the Porous Medium Equation
2018
We study the boundary regularity of solutions to the porous medium equation $u_t = \Delta u^m$ in the degenerate range $m>1$. In particular, we show that in cylinders the Dirichlet problem with positive continuous boundary data on the parabolic boundary has a solution which attains the boundary values, provided that the spatial domain satisfies the elliptic Wiener criterion. This condition is known to be optimal, and it is a consequence of our main theorem which establishes a barrier characterization of regular boundary points for general -- not necessarily cylindrical -- domains in ${\bf R}^{n+1}$. One of our fundamental tools is a new strict comparison principle between sub- and superpara…
Spaces of holomorphic functions in regular domains
2009
AbstractLet Ω be a regular domain in the complex plane C, Ω≠C. Let Gb(Ω) be the linear space over C of the holomorphic functions f in Ω such that f(n) is bounded in Ω and is continuously extendible to the closure Ω¯ of Ω, n=0,1,2,… . We endow Gb(Ω), in a natural manner, with a structure of Fréchet space and we obtain dense subspaces F of Gb(Ω), with good topological linear properties, also satisfying that each function f of F, distinct from zero, does not extend holomorphically outside Ω.
Lower Semi-frames, Frames, and Metric Operators
2020
AbstractThis paper deals with the possibility of transforming a weakly measurable function in a Hilbert space into a continuous frame by a metric operator, i.e., a strictly positive self-adjoint operator. A necessary condition is that the domain of the analysis operator associated with the function be dense. The study is done also with the help of the generalized frame operator associated with a weakly measurable function, which has better properties than the usual frame operator. A special attention is given to lower semi-frames: indeed, if the domain of the analysis operator is dense, then a lower semi-frame can be transformed into a Parseval frame with a (special) metric operator.
Boundary modulus of continuity and quasiconformal mappings
2012
Let D be a bounded domain in R n , n ‚ 2, and let f be a continuous mapping of D into R n which is quasiconformal in D. Suppose that jf(x) i f(y)j • !(jx i yj) for all x and y in @D, where ! is a non-negative non-decreasing function satisfying !(2t) • 2!(t) for t ‚ 0. We prove, with an additional growth condition on !, that jf(x) i f(y)jC maxf!(jx i yj);jx i yj fi g

Notions of Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient in metric measure spaces
2019
We study two notions of Dirichlet problem associated with BV energy minimizers (also called functions of least gradient) in bounded domains in metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a (1, 1)-Poincaré inequality. Since one of the two notions is not amenable to the direct method of the calculus of variations, we construct, based on an approach of Juutinen and Mazón-Rossi–De León, solutions by considering the Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic functions, p>1, and letting p→1. Tools developed and used in this paper include the inner perimeter measure of a domain. Peer reviewed
On the structure of the set of solutions of nonlinear equations
1971
Let T be a mapping from a subset of a Banach space X into a Banach space Y. The present paper investigates the nature of the set of solutions of the equation T(x) = y for a given y E Y, i.e. when T-l(y) # 0 ? What are the topological properties of T-l(y)? A prototype for an answer to these questions is given by Peano existence theorem on the connectedness of the set of solutions of an ordinary differential equation in the real case. In its general setting, this problem was first attacked by Aronszajn [l] and Stampacchia [l 11; recently, by Browder-Gupta [5], Vidossich [12] and, above all, Browder [3, Sec. 51 who gives several interesting results in an excellent treatment. Customary, the str…
Korn inequality on irregular domains
2013
Abstract In this paper, we study the weighted Korn inequality on some irregular domains, e.g., s-John domains and domains satisfying quasihyperbolic boundary conditions. Examples regarding sharpness of the Korn inequality on these domains are presented. Moreover, we show that Korn inequalities imply certain Poincare inequality.
Bonnesenʼs inequality for John domains in Rn
2012
Abstract We prove sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for John domains in R n . We show that the Bonnesen-style inequalities hold true in R n under the John domain assumption which rules out cusps. Our main tool is a proof of the isoperimetric inequality for symmetric domains which gives an explicit estimate for the isoperimetric deficit. We use the sharp quantitative inequalities proved in Fusco et al. (2008) [7] and Fuglede (1989) [4] to reduce our problem to symmetric domains.
