During evolution and with the emergence of multicellular animals, the need arose to ward off foreign organisms that threaten the integrity of the animal body. Among many different receptors that participate in the recognition of microbial invaders, toll-like receptors (TLRs) play an essential role in mediating the innate immune response. After binding distinct microbial components, TLRs activate intracellular signaling cascades that result in an induced expression of diverse antimicrobial molecules. Abstract Axial load and biaxial bending strongly influence the deformation capacity of column cross-sections, in most cases causing a non-negligible loss of curvature and ductility with respect to the case of pure bending along principal axes, commonly assumed as the basic condition to assess the inelastic capacity. Spatial distribution of pasma membranes (PM) components is tightly regulated to provide the cell an optimal physiological state. The level of order degree is a suitable parameter to study PM organization, reflecting the intensity of interactions taking place between PM components and so the level of their packing. Synthesis, Chirality, and Magnetic Properties of Bimetallic Cyanide-Bridged Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets

The assembly of hexacyanoferrate(III) anions and nickel(II) bis-diamino complexes of the chiral ligand trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine (trans-chxn) yields cyanide-bridged two-dimensional ferromagnets of the general formula [Ni(trans-chxn)2]3[Fe(CN)6]2‚2H2O. Their crystal structure is built from cyanide-bridged bimetallic planes separated by the bulky chxn ligands, giving rise to a large interlayer distance ( d ) 11.7 A). These materials order ferromagnetically at the Curie temperature TC ) 14 K. AC susceptibility measurements evidence an unusual magnetic behavior below TC, with a marked frequency dependence. DOMAIN AND MOLECULAR SUPERLATTICE STRUCTURE OF DODECANETHIOL SELF-ASSEMBLED ON AU(111)

1994

Annealed organic monolayers of dodecanethiol (CH3(CH2)11SH) self-assembled on Au(111) have been investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy. By using very high tunnelling resistances (TOMEGA) we find evidence of well-ordered molecular domains at room temperature and observe two different types of c(4 x 2) superlattice structures with the same rectangular unit cell. In contrast to theoretical calculations each unit cell contains four inequivalent molecules. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
