A virtual instrument for the measurement of IEEE Std 1459-2000 power quantities

2006

In this paper, the authors present a PC-based instrument for the measurement of electrical-power quantities defined in IEEE Std. 1459. The instrument is based on a time-domain technique for the detection of the fundamental and harmonic components of voltages and currents. The time-domain strategy was originally developed by the authors for three-phase, three-wire systems. In that paper, the strategy had been extended to both three-phase, four-wire and single-phase systems. Simulation tests were carried out to assess the uncertainty contribution of the proposed strategy in the absence of the measurement transducers. Moreover, the accuracy of the PC-based instrument with its transducers was e…

A New Measurement Method for the Detection of Harmonic Sources in Power Systems Based on the Approach of the IEEE Std. 1459–2000

2010

In this paper, a novel single-point strategy is proposed for the detection of the harmonic sources in power systems. The method is an improvement of a strategy previously proposed by the authors; it is developed from the IEEE Std 1459-2000 approach and it can be entirely implemented in the time domain, thus simplifying the measurement system. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by introducing simple decision-making rules and by taking the presence of the measurement transducers into account. Several simulations and experimental tests are presented, showing that the enhanced strategy is able to give an useful information on the detection of the dominant harmonic source upst…

Interaction between Longitudinal Shear and Transverse Bending in Prestressed Concrete Box Girders

2017

In box girder bridges, the quantity and distribution of reinforcement to be put in concrete elements of sections can be evaluated only by considering the deformation of the cross section in addition to the longitudinal analysis of the static scheme, establishing the entire state of stress of box sections. This leads to a need to evaluate the interaction between internal forces obtained by the global analysis and the ones obtained by the local analysis of the cross sections. The frame effect implies the elastic deformation of slabs and webs, whereas eccentrically applied loads lead to cross-section distortion with the loss of the box shape. Hence, the reinforcement is strongly influenced by …

3D image acquisition system based on shape from focus technique

2013

agent Agrosup Dijon de l'UMREcolDurGEAPSI; This paper describes the design of a 3D image acquisition system dedicated to natural complex scenes composed of randomly distributed objects with spatial discontinuities. In agronomic sciences, the 3D acquisition of natural scene is difficult due to the complex nature of the scenes. Our system is based on the Shape from Focus technique initially used in the microscopic domain. We propose to adapt this technique to the macroscopic domain and we detail the system as well as the image processing used to perform such technique. The Shape from Focus technique is a monocular and passive 3D acquisition method that resolves the occlusion problem affecting…

Formwork application optimization by using augmented reality

2016

By using the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) principle on the formwork case study, after determining the functions and the technical solutions, the application must be made as optimum as possible in order to assure productivity and provide the necessary information as quick as possible. The concept is to create a complex management for the formwork based on augmented reality. By taking into account the development rate of the information, augmented reality is tending to be one of the widest (in term of domain) visualization instrument. Also used in the construction domain, augmented reality can be applied also for the case of formwork design and management. The application of the solutio…

A low-cost compact uniplanar Quasi–Yagi printed antenna

2008

A low cost directive uniplanar broadband printed Quasi–Yagi antenna design is presented. As a particular realization, some prototypes have been designed to operate in the 2.45 GHz band. They have been then modeled, fabricated onto standard printed circuit dielectric substrate and tested successfully. For the design and the modeling processes, we have make use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. The obtained bandwidth is, for all the considered cases, better than 15%. The main radiation characteristics are 2–5.5 dBi gain, depending on the number of director elements, and better than 25 dB front-to-back ratio. Overall antenna size was, in any case lesser than 1 λ × 0.5 λ. © 2008 Wile…

Design of Yagi-like printed antennas for WLAN applications

2007

A directive broadband printed Yagi-like antenna design is presented. We have focused on the 2.45 GHz WLAN band, at which some designs have been carried out. For the design and the modelling processes, we made use of FDTD based in-house developed algorithms. Some selected prototypes have then been fabricated onto a low-cost printed circuit board dielectric substrate and tested successfully. Bandwidths higher than 10% and moderate to high (>7 dBi) gains can be obtained this way. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Hybrid Machine Learning and Knowledge Based Approach to Limit Combinatorial Explosion in Biodegradation Prediction

2016

One of the main tasks in chemical industry regarding the sustainability of a product is the prediction of its environmental fate, i.e., its degradation products and pathways. Current methods for the prediction of biodegradation products and pathways of organic environmental pollutants either do not take into account domain knowledge or do not provide probability estimates. In this chapter, we propose a hybrid knowledge-based and machine learning-based approach to overcome these limitations in the context of the University of Minnesota Pathway Prediction System (UM-PPS). The proposed solution performs relative reasoning in a machine learning framework, and obtains one probability estimate fo…

On the Impact of Plant Model and Controller Sophistication on Performance of Disturbance Attenuation and System Robustness

2006

In the paper the problem of disturbance attenuation performance in single-loop control system is investigated. Modified MV control strategy with bounded control variance is used as benchmark for both LQG and classically and optimally tuned PID-type controllers. Certain time and frequency domain functions are then examined to further assess the control performance in terms of robustness. It has been shown that as long as the system to be controlled is delay-free, and there is no extreme demand on performance, simple lag-delay system model along with optimally tuned PID control algorithm provides control quality similar to that of LQG controlled original system assuming the same bound on cont…
