New insights into the role of spermine in Arabidopsis thaliana under long-term salt stress

Polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) are traditionally implicated in the response of plants to environmental cues. Free spermine accumulation has been suggested as a particular feature of long-term salt stress, and in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana the spermine synthase gene (AtSPMS) has been reported as inducible by abscisic acid (ABA) and acute salt stress treatments. AbstractUsher syndrome (USH) is the most common form of hereditary deafness-blindness in humans. USH is a complex genetic disorder, assigned to three clinical subtypes differing in onset, course, and severity, with USH1 being the most severe. Rodent USH1 models do not reflect the ocular phenotype observed in human patients to date; hence, little is known about the pathophysiology of USH1 in the human eye. One of the USH1 genes, USH1C, exhibits extensive alternative splicing and encodes numerous harmonin protein isoforms that function as scaffolds for organizing the USH interactome. Abstract Astacin metalloproteinases, in particular meprins α and β, as well as ovastacin, are emerging drug targets. Drug‐discovery efforts have led to the development of the first potent and selective inhibitors in the last few years. However, the most recent compounds are based on a highly flexible tertiary amine scaffold that could cause metabolic liabilities or decreased potency due to the entropic penalty upon binding to the target. Thus, the aim of this study was to discover novel conformationally constrained scaffolds as starting points for further inhibitor optimization. Correlation between the Ionicity Character and the Charge Density in Semiconductors

Using the electronic charge densities obtained by the empirical pseudopotential method for tetrahedrally bonded semiconductors, an ionicity scale is established that is in good agreement with the Phillips ionicity scale.

Luminescence spectra and decay kinetics in ZnWO4 and CdWO4 crystals

The luminescence spectra and luminescence decay kinetics in ZnWO4 (nominal pure and doped with Fe and Mo) under pulsed electron beam and pulsed nitrogen laser excitation have been investigated. It is suggested that the two-stage intrinsic luminescence decay observed under ionizing radiation excitation in ZnWO4 and CdWO4 was due to two different self-trapped exciton (STE) configurations in these crystals. The role of Fe and Mo impurities for scintillation efficiency in ZnWO4 and CdWO4 has been discussed. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Membrane protein integration into the endoplasmic reticulum

Most integral membrane proteins are targeted, inserted and assembled in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. The sequential and potentially overlapping events necessary for membrane protein integration take place at sites termed translocons, which comprise a specific set of membrane proteins acting in concert with ribosomes and, probably, molecular chaperones to ensure the success of the whole process. In this minireview, we summarize our current understanding of helical membrane protein integration at the endoplasmic reticulum, and highlight specific characteristics that affect the biogenesis of multispanning membrane proteins.

Rye (Secale cereale L.) plants were treated with an ethylene releaser ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) in concentration of 4×10−2 M. We studied electron microscopically, if and how chloroplasts interact with well-documented sites of ethylene production/binding, i.e., with endoplasmic reticulum, dictyosomes, mitochondria, plasma membrane, and tonoplast.
