The stimulatory effect of Nacom (250 mg L-Dopa and 25 mg L-Carbidopa) on the HGH secretion was evaluated in 75 short stature patients. The number of blood samples was restricted to only three (0, 45 and 90 min). 63 patients reached adequate HGH concentrations after the ingestion of 1 tablet Nacom (84%). Somatotropin levels increased from 2.08 (Sx 0.28) to a maximal HGH value of 14.22 (Sx 0.87) ng/ml. When the stimulatory effect of Nacom was compared with the standard method of arginine infusion in children with normal stature the arginine test was not superior to the Nacom-test. Interferon (IFN)-alpha has a therapeutic effect in several B cell malignancies, including low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), multiple myeloma, and hairy cell leukemia, whereas its efficacy in the treatment of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is rather limited. In the present study, we investigated the effect of IFN-alpha on the biologic functions of B-CLL cells, which were stimulated by cross-linking of the CD40 antigen. Summary Transesophageal echocardiography and standard two-dimensional echocardiography were performed in 15 patients with suspected coarctation of the aorta. Aortic diameters and crosssectional areas were determined by means of TEE and compared with clinical findings and catheterization data. The isthmus of the aorta could be imaged in all patients using TEE, but in only seven patients using standard suprasternal echocardiography. Compared with controls, aortic diameters were narrowed in 9 of 15 patients, and cross-sectional areas were reduced in 13 of 15. The pineal-specific cells, the pinealocytes, contain only inconspicuous numbers of secretory granules, and the variable amounts of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum also do not point to a particular function.
