Assessing the determination of salivary electrolytes and anti-Ro and anti-La antibodies for the diagnosis of Sjogren s syndrome (SS)
2009
The aim of this study was to assess changes in salivary electrolyte flow and composition and the presence of anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB serum and saliva antibodies and their implications for the non-invasive diagnosis of SS. Study design: 73 patients were studied, divided into the following experimental groups: primary Sjögren syndrome (SSp) (n=15), secondary SS (SSs) (n=17), dry mouth, dry eye without Sjögren?s syndrome (BO) (n=20) and healthy controls (C) (n=21). We conducted a baseline assessment of salivary flow and saliva sampling for the measurement of sodium, chlorine, potassium, calcium and phosphate electrolytes, and the determination of antiRo/SSA and La/SSB antibodies; a serum s…
A New Model of Skull Base Reconstruction following Expanded Endonasal or Transoral Approaches – Long-Term Results in Primates
2007
Objective: The direct endonasal or transoral transclival approaches to the skull base permit effective minimally invasive surgery along the clivus region. Developing consistently effective techniques to prevent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and their consequences (infections and healing processes with long and complicated recoveries) remains a major challenge. In this study, we tested over a long period a method of bone reconstruction newly developed by us, which makes use of a specially designed elastic silicone plug that can be employed for bone replacement after minimally invasive skull base surgery without risk of postoperative CSF leaks. After acute testing of plug…
Early effects of empagliflozin on exercise tolerance in patients with heart failure: A pilot study
2018
BackgroundSodium-glucose linked transporter 2 inhibition recently emerged as a promising therapy for reducing the risk of heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, there is a lack of data endorsing its role in symptomatic HF patients. We sought to evaluate the short-term effects of empagliflozin on maximal exercise capacity in these patients. HypothesisWe postulate tretament with empagliflozin may improve functional capacity in patients with T2DM and established HF. MethodsNineteen T2DM patients with symptomatic HF were prospectively included and underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and 30days after initiation of empagliflozin therapy. A mixe…
Risk factors associated with xerostomia in haemodialysis patients
2017
Background To determine the prevalence of xerostomia and hyposalivation in Haemodialysis (HD) patients, to clarify risk factors, assess patient´s quality of life, and to establish a possible correlation among interdialytic weight gain (IDWG) and xerostomia. Material and Methods This study was performed on a group of 50 HD patients. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing demographic and clinical variables, a visual analogue scale (VAS) for xerostomia, IDWG, and an oral health impact profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). Unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) were collected. Results A total of 28 HD patients (56%) suffered xerostomia. Dry mouth was associat…
Re-establishment of complement C6-deficient rabbit colony by cryopreserved sperm transported from abroad.
2007
Introducing rabbits as genetic materials into institutes for experimental animals from other colonies is essential for biomedical research. Currently, it is inconvenient to transport live rabbits from abroad, since they suffer from stress, are prone to accidents and must be inspected, as well as endure quarantine during the often long journey. To overcome these limitations of live animals, we transported sperm cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Rabbit sperm was collected from complement C6-deficient rabbits in Germany and then transported to Japan using a dry-shipper containing liquid nitrogen. After thawing the frozen semen and artificial insemination (AI), eleven live pups were born. Subse…
Late Quaternary environments in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia: Vegetation, hydrological, and palaeoclimate evolution
2019
Abstract Considerable efforts have been devoted to decipher the late Quaternary moisture and thermal evolution of arid central Asia. However, disparate interpretations still exist concerning different proxies. The spatial and temporal heterogeneities have inhibited a holistic understanding of general patterns and underlying mechanisms. To address these issues, two parallel cores (ONW I, 6.00 m; ONW II, 13.35 m) were retrieved in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia from lake Orog Nuur. Multidisciplinary investigations including geomorphological mapping, radiocarbon dating, sedimentological, palynological and ostracod analyses enabled us to gain a comprehensive dataset for vegetation development and …
Environmental value chain management of laundry detergents in the use phase
2008
Environmental value chain management is concerned with the environmental aspects of products and services along the whole value chain, from raw material and energy acquisition to waste management. The use phase in the value chain remains an understudied subject, despite considerable consumption-related environmental impacts. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the use phase of laundry detergents in households. Our empirical data consist of interviews in the laundry rooms of 299 Finnish households. Consumers’ environmental awareness, use of dosage measuring devices and actual doses of laundry detergents are studied in the empirical part of the study. The results show that consumers do no…
CHARACTERIZATION OF RUBBERIZED ASPHALT FOR RAILWAY SUB-BALLASTS
Damping of rotor conical whirl by asymmetric dry friction suspension
2009
Abstract A new technique for the rotor whirl damping in rotating machinery, based on the elastic suspension of the journal boxes and the use of dry friction surfaces normal to the shaft axis between their supports and the frame, is here analysed theoretically for several cases of rotor systems characterized by mass and constraint asymmetry, where gyroscopic effects are to be expected and conical whirl motions may grow up. The critical flexural speeds can be easily cut off by an adhesive state of the supports and the whirl amplitude can be minimized as well throughout the remaining sliding range. Confining the operative angular speed of the rotor in the range of adhesive contact between the …
Friction and wear testing of multilayer coatings on carbide substrates for dry machining applications
2002
Abstract The principle aim of this paper is to investigate three wear-protective coatings with multilayer structures, which are frequently used in the cutting tool industry and to assess their frictional behaviour under the test conditions equivalent to those for the cutting of medium carbon steel. A modified pin-on-disc tester was used to conduct experiments in which both the friction coefficient and the linear wear of the tribo-pair were recorded vs. sliding distance. The volumetric wear rate was proposed as a parameter for quantitative comparison of the wear resistance of the tribo-pairs tested. It was found that the principle stage of the specimen wear takes place during the first 200–2…
