Modeling small‐scale cassava starch extraction. Simulation of the reduction of water consumption through a recycling process

2010

International audience; The purpose of this study was to model the extraction unit operation of the cassava starch manufacturing process and to propose a realistic recycling simulation in order to reduce the volumes of effluents. The model was developed from reactors which are commonly used for cassava starch extraction at a household scale in Vietnam. The reactors were tested using inflow starch as a marker at the beginning of the batch process. The experimental residence time distribution (RTDexp) was calculated by the outflow of the starch concentration. Using Matlab®, the RTDexp was compared to the theoretical residence time distribution (RTDth). The dynamic model obtained was built up …

Osmotic stress affects the stability of freeze-dried Lactobacillus buchneri R1102 as a result of intracellular betaine accumulation and membrane char…

2014

Aims To help cells to better resist the stressful conditions associated with the freeze-drying process during starter production, we investigated the effect of various osmotic conditions on growth, survival and acidification activity of Lactobacillus buchneri R1102, after freeze-drying and during storage for 3 months at 25°C. Methods and Results High survival rates during freeze-drying, but not during storage, were obtained when 0·1 mol l−1 KCl was added at the beginning of fermentation, without any change in membrane properties and betaine accumulation. This condition made it possible to maintain a high acidification rate throughout the process. In contrast, the addition of 0·6 mol l−1 KCl…

Dependence of seed nitrogen concentration on plant nitrogen availability during the seed filling in pea

1999

Abstract The final seed nitrogen (N) concentration of the pea ( Pisum sativum L.) varies greatly with environment. These variations seem to be related to N availability in the plant. To understand such an effect, the pattern of seed N concentration during seed filling was analysed at a given node as the ratio of seed N accumulation rate and seed dry matter accumulation rate. Three experiments were conducted in the field and glasshouse. Pea genotypes ‘Solara’, ‘Frisson’ and its non-nodulating mutant ‘P2’ were grown and different treatments were applied to manipulate N availability during seed filling. Treatments included N supply (addition of N fertiliser), depodding (removal of pods) and de…

Production of a cheese model for sensory evaluation of flavour compounds

1995

Summary - A cheese model used to perform sensory evaluation of flavour compounds extracted from various cheese varieties was made with caseins, low heat milk powder, deodorized milk fat, NaCI and renne!. Its composition and physicochemical properties were close to mature hard cheese, apart from a lower dry matter content and sodium concentration, and a higher lactose concentration. Its preparation was established in arder to avoid drainage for at least 24 h, which should allow the incorporation of not only sorne lipophilic substances such as aromas but also some water-soluble substances such as amino acids and peptides. The rheological behaviour of the cheese model measured by a compression…

Selection and integration of a new immunomodulatory probiotic strain in a food supplement

2012

Probiotics are live microorganisms that can act on the immune system at specific sites in the gastro-intestinal tract. From a technological point of view, the development of a dietary supplement containing viable and functional probiotics requires the control of the selection and production steps. In a first time, we have developed specific and sensitive screening tests to determine the ability of bacteria to be dried and the origin of its sensitivity. To develop these tests, we investigated the mechanisms involved during drying process. Thus, microorganisms simultaneously undergo osmotic stress and oxidative stress. Results show a strong impact of drying on the survival rate and immunomodu…

Time Course of Inflammation and Apoptosis in a Scopolamine–Induced Dry Eye Rat Model

2006

International audience; Purpose: : Dry eye syndrome is due to tear secretion deficiency or excessive tear evaporation leading to tear film instability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time course of inflammation and apoptosis in a scopolamine–induced dry eye rat model. Methods: : Osmotic pumps continuously delivering scopolamine (12.5mg/d) were implanted subcutaneously in female Lewis rats for 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 17 and 28 days. During the treatment, the corneal status was assessed by fluorescein impregnation and tears were collected for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) immunoassay. At the end of the treatment period, the animals were sacrificed and the ocular tissues and the lacrimal glands w…

Impact of a new bio-pesticide produced by Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 on the genetic structure and density of soil bacterial communities

2007

The effect of paenimyxin, a new biopesticide produced by Paenibacillus sp. strain B2, on the density of soil bacterial communities was assessed by colony counting and by 16S rDNA and nirK quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Paenimyxin had a negative effect on the bacterial colony-forming unit (CFU) number, which was significantly reduced 2 and 4 days after treatment. The effect of paenimyxin on cultivatable bacteria was negligible 7 days after treatment. Approximately 107 16S rDNA sequences per gram of soil (dry weight) were detected by quantitative PCR in all samples. Paenimyxin did not affect the quantification of 16S rDNA or of the denitrifying bacterial community. In addition,…

First-Hand Becomes Second-Hand: André Brink's A Dry White Season

2009

This paper offers a reading of André Brink's novel A Dry White Season in relation to his own essay The Novel:. Language and Narrative From Cervantes to Calvino. The aim is to demonstrate that Brink's theory can help highlight aspects of his apartheid writings which have often been neglected. The paper explores, in particular, the metafictional features of a novel more famous for its committed nature than for its self-reflexivity
