Background To describe the characteristics of xerostomia (dry mouth) in the population with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) and contrast its prevalence versus that found in healthy subjects, and to compare the frequency of xerostomia in SAHS patients with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. Material and methods A prospective comparative study was made between adults recently diagnosed with SAHS in a public hospital (n=60) and healthy individuals (n=54). Tomato halves were dried in a combined microwave-hot air system. Drying experiments were carried out by applying the microwave energy (0.5 W/g) at the beginning of the dehydration process (for 2 and 3.5 hours); simultaneously combining microwave (0.25 W/g) with convective hot-air drying (70°C); and by applying only convective hot air at 70°C. The combined microwave-hot air heating reduced significantly the drying time (up to 50 %), if compared with the only convective system. Bakalaura darbs “Uzturs un tā ietekme uz asaru plēvītes kvalitāti” uzrakstīts angļu valodā uz 33 lapām, satur 9 attēlus, 5 tabulas un 35 literatūras atsauces. Darba mērķis: noteikt saistību starp uzturu un asaru plēvītes kvalitāti. Metode: dalībniekiem bija jāievēro noteikta diēta. Viņu asaru plēvītes kvalitāte tika novērota 6 mēnešus – mērījumi tika veikti pirmajā vizītē un tad atkārtoti pēc 1, 3 un 6 mēnešiem ar BUT, Schirmer 1 un TBUT testu. Secinājumi: ievērojot noteiktu diētu, asaru plēvītes kvalitāte uzlabojas visas vecuma grupās, lai gan labāki rezultāti novērojami jaunākās vecuma grupās.
