The HPC Certification Forum: Toward a Globally Acknowledged HPC Certification

2020

The goal of the HPC Certification Forum is to categorize, define, and examine competencies expected from proficient HPC practitioners. The community-led forum is working toward establishing a globally acknowledged HPC certification process, a process that engages with HPC centers to identify gaps in users’ knowledge, and with users to identify the skills required to perform their tasks. In this article, we introduce the forum and summarize the progress made over the last two years. The release of the first officially supported certificate is planned for the second half of 2020.

Spatial joins

2019

The spatial join is a popular operation in spatial database systems and its evaluation is a well-studied problem. This paper reviews research and recent trends on spatial join evaluation. The complexity of different data types, the consideration of different join predicates, the use of modern commodity hardware, and support for parallel processing open the road to a number of interesting directions for future research, some of which we outline in the paper.

Pure Functions in C: A Small Keyword for Automatic Parallelization

2017

AbstractThe need for parallel task execution has been steadily growing in recent years since manufacturers mainly improve processor performance by increasing the number of installed cores instead of scaling the processor’s frequency. To make use of this potential, an essential technique to increase the parallelism of a program is to parallelize loops. Several automatic loop nest parallelizers have been developed in the past such as PluTo. The main restriction of these tools is that the loops must be statically analyzable which, among other things, disallows function calls within the loops. In this article, we present a seemingly simple extension to the C programming language which marks fun…

Study of relationships between the structure of aroma compounds and their retention-release between vapour phase and dairy gels

2010

An integrated approach physicochemistry and structures activity relationships has been carried out to study the aroma compounds retention-release phenomenon in a fat free dairy gel added with pectin. This study aimed to identify the molecular properties that govern this phenomenon assuming that modifying the structure leads automatically to a change in the retention-release of aroma compounds. For this purpose, we have determined the partition coefficients of 28 aroma compounds in water, in pectin gels and in dairy gels supplemented or not supplemented with pectin, at equilibrium conditions using the PRV method (Phase Ratio Variation). Then, we have performed a structure-retention relations…

Flavor Release from i-Carrageenan Matrix: A Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships Approach

2006

International audience; We carried out a QSPR (quantitative structure-property relationships) approach to evaluate the influence of the chemical structure of aqueous matrixes over the partition coefficient between the gas phase and the matrix. The determination of the partition coefficient of flavor ingredients was performed by headspace analysis at equilibrium for both saline solution and -carrageenan gel. Starting from an initial list of 90 descriptors, we selected 10 descriptors to perform equation generation by the GFA (genetic function approximation) method available in the Cerius2 package. The best obtained equations involve only five descriptors, which encode electronic properties of…

Multiscale simulations of protein landscapes: Using coarse-grained models as reference potentials to full explicit models

2010

Evaluating the free-energy landscape of proteins and the corresponding functional aspects presents a major challenge for computer simulation approaches. This challenge is due to the complexity of the landscape and the enormous computer time needed for converging simulations. The use of simplified coarse-grained (CG) folding models offers an effective way of sampling the landscape but such a treatment, however, may not give the correct description of the effect of the actual protein residues. A general way around this problem that has been put forward in our early work (Fan et al., Theor Chem Acc 1999;103:77-80) uses the CG model as a reference potential for free-energy calculations of diffe…

Low-Grade Mylonites

2009

The temperature range for these mylonites is thought to be roughly between 250 and 500 °C. There is a gradual transition between cataclasites and low-grade mylonites. Whereas many feldspar porphyroclasts in low-grade mylonites still show fracturing by cataclasis, the quartz is usually deformed by crystal-plastic processes as shown by its change in shape and by undulose extinction. At increasing temperature bulging recrystallisation starts to manifest itself along the lobate contacts and eventually recrystallisation by subgrain rotation takes over (Chapter 10).

Impact of Coseismic Frictional Melting on Particle Size, Shape Distribution and Chemistry of Experimentally-Generated Pseudotachylite

2020

In natural friction melts, or pseudotachylites, clast textures and glass compositions can influence the frictional behavior of faults hosting pseudotachylites, and are, in turn, sensitive to the processes involved in pseudotachylite formation. Quantification of these parameters in situations where the host rock composition and formation conditions are well-constrained, such as analogue experiments, may yield calibrations that can be employed in analysis of natural pseudotachylites. In this paper, we experimentally-generated pseudotachylites in granitoid rocks (tonalite and Westerly granite) at Pconf= 40 MPa and slip rates of ∼0.1 m s−1, comparable to the conditions under which natural pseud…
