Molecular dynamics in low-molar and polymeric ferroelectric liquid crystals

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy covering the frequency range from 10−1 Hz to 109 Hz was employed to study the molecular dynamics in low-molar and polymeric ferrroelectric liquid crystals. At frequencies below 106 Hz the ferroelectric modes, soft and Goldstone mode are observed. In the frequency regime from 106 Hz to 109 Hz a fast relaxation process is found, which is assigned to the hindered rotation of the mesogens around their long molecular axis. It turns out that the molecular dynamics is not principally different between low-molar and polymeric systems.

The Global Side of the Investments-Savings Puzzle

In this paper we re-examine the long standing and puzzling correlation between national savings and investment in industrial countries. We apply an econometric methodology that allows us to separate idiosyncratic correlation at the country level from correlation at the global level. In a major break with the existing literature, we find no evidence of a long run relationship in the idiosyncratic components of savings and investment. We also find that the global components in savings and investments commove, indicating that they react to shocks of a global nature.

Formulation of a new sustainable feed from food industry discards for rearing the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus

The lack of suitable feeds for echinoculture has led to use natural resources already widely exploited by human activities. To move towards a higher sustainability of echinoculture, this study proposes a sustainable feed for Paracentrotus lividus. Two experimental formulations were obtained using discarded endive (Cichorium endivia) leaves and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) industry discards in different proportions, and agar as a binder. The evaluation of the feed stability showed that the feed was stable for 72 hr, allowing a suitable feeding for sea urchins. A mesh less approch based upon Radial basis function Hermite collocation method for predicting the cooling and the freezing times of foods

This work presents a meshless numerical scheme for the solution of time dependent non linear heat transfer problems in terms of a radial basis function Hermite collocation approach. The proposed scheme is applied to foodstuff's samples during freezing process; evaluation of the time evolution of the temperature profile along the sample, as well as at the core, is carried out. The moving phase-change zone is identified in the domain and plotted at several timesteps. The robustness of the proposed scheme is tested by a comparison of the obtained numerical results with those found using a Finite Volume Method and with experimental results.

Coagulase negative staphylococci are increasingly recognized as leading pathogens in bacteremia, with incidence peaking in intensive care units. Interpretation of blood cultures that are positive for CoNS is often doubtful. We describe a fatal case of bacteremia by a newly recognized species of CoNS,Staphylococcus pettenkoferi, in an ICU patient.

Finnish salmon resistant to Gyrodactylus salaris: a long-term study at fish farms.

Abstract The occurrence of Gyrodactylus salaris on Baltic salmon ( Salmo salar ), sea trout ( S. trutta m. trutta ) and brown trout ( S. trutta m. lacustris ) was examined from 1984 to 1993 at 4 fish farms (A, B, C and D) that produce smolts for stocking in northern Finland. No G. salaris was found on the sea or brown trout, but it did occur on salmon for 6–7 years at farms B, C and D, the prevalences of infection being 9.5%, 17.7% and 8.8% for salmon yearlings and smolts during that time, respectively, but less than 1.2% for fingerlings at farms B and C.
