Radiation damage in zircon
2003
A single, zoned, Sri Lankan zircon exhibits a range of microstructures from crystalline to nearly amorphous that are the result of radiation damage over a dose range of 2.1–10.1·1015 α-decay events/mg (0.16–0.47 dpa). The zones in the crystal were examined at a variety of length scales using optical microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. Birefringence varies linearly with dose: birefringence = −4.71·10−18 /g· D α + 4.86·10−2. Full width at half maximum (FWHM) measurements of the B1g(ν3) peak, as determined by micro-Raman spectroscopy, were used to estimate the extent of radiation damage in each zone. The radiation dose (calc…
Photoluminescence excited by ArF and KrF lasers and optical absorption of stishovite mono-crystal
2008
Two photoluminescence bands were found in a stishovite (silicon dioxide) mono-crystal sample under ArF (193 nm) and KrF (248 nm) excitation. The blue band is situated at 3.17 ± 0.02 eV in the case of ArF and at 3 ± 0.2 in the case of KrF. The UV band is at 4.55 ± 0.05 eV in the case of ArF and at 4.5 ± 0.05 eV in the case of KrF. The position of the UV emission band correlates with that excited by x rays. This position is 4.6 ± 0.05 eV with FWHM 0.8 ± 0.05 eV (Truhins et al 2003 Solid State Commun. 127 415). The blue band possesses slow decay kinetics with time constant 16 ± 2 µs and the UV band is fast on the level of 2 ± 0.5 ns, similarly for both lasers. Thermal quenching of both bands b…
Crystal Fields in PrX3 (X=In, Tl, Pb, Sn) Intermetallic Compounds with Cu3Au Structure
1977
We have determined the crystal field splittings of Pr3+ in PrIn3, PrTl3, PrPb3, and PrSn3 by inelastic neutron scattering. The values of the deduced crystal field parameters are found to depend strongly on the constituent X, though all systems have nonmagnetic ground-states. The line widths in the different systems are compared.

Kinyarwanda and Kirundi: On Colonial Divisions, Discourses of National Belonging, and Language Boundaries
2019
The development of the Bantu languages Kinyarwanda and Kirundi is entangled within the colonial histories of Rwanda and Burundi, first under German and then Belgian rule. From the turn of the twentieth century on, missionaries compiled grammars and dictionaries of the two mutually intelligible languages, contributing to the development and instrumentalisation of two prestigious varieties out of a larger dialect continuum. In this contribution, I trace the missionary and colonial activities of corpus planning and textualisation and summarise how Kinyarwanda and Kirundi turned into official languages with distinct linguistic boundaries. The central research question is how speakers of Kinyarw…
Visualising political thinking on the screen : a dialogue between von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt and its protagonist
2016
This article analyses Margarethe von Trotta’s film Hannah Arendt: The Woman Who Saw Banality in Evil through its protagonist’s own writings on visual culture, visibility and invisibility in the context of political thinking. We start by clarifying Arendt’s understanding of political theory as an activity aiming to provoke thinking. We then discuss systematically the visual language of the film and offer a typology of its representations of political thinking, subdivided into a part on internalisation and one on externalisation (dialogue). We emphasise von Trotta’s reliance on a negative approach, i.e. the representation of thinking through the absence of any other activity while thinking, c…
Enhancement of premature stop codon readthrough in the CFTR gene by Ataluren (PTC124) derivatives.
2015
Abstract Premature stop codons are the result of nonsense mutations occurring within the coding sequence of a gene. These mutations lead to the synthesis of a truncated protein and are responsible for several genetic diseases. A potential pharmacological approach to treat these diseases is to promote the translational readthrough of premature stop codons by small molecules aiming to restore the full-length protein. The compound PTC124 (Ataluren) was reported to promote the readthrough of the premature UGA stop codon, although its activity was questioned. The potential interaction of PTC124 with mutated mRNA was recently suggested by molecular dynamics (MD) studies highlighting the importanc…
Identification of a new molecule with readthrough activity to rescue CFTR protein function
In Cystic fibrosis (CF) disease nonsense mutations in the CFTR gene cause absence of the CFTR protein expression and a more severe form of the disease. About 10% of patient affected by CF show a nonsense mutation. A potential treatment of this alteration is to promote translational readthrough of premature termination codons (PTCs) by translational readthrough inducing drugs such as Ataluren. In this context we aimed to compare the 1,2,4-oxadiazole core of Ataluren with a slightly different scaffold, the 1,3,4oxadiazole core. By a validated protocol consisting of computational screening, synthesis and biological tests we identified, a new small molecule with 1,3,4-oxadiazole core (2a/NV2445…
