Association Between Uric Acid and Renal Hemodynamics: Pathophysiological Implications for Renal Damage in Hypertensive Patients

2016

The role of vascular renal changes in mediating the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and renal damage is unclear. The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between SUA and renal resistive index (RRI), assessed by duplex Doppler ultrasonography, and to assess whether hemodynamic renal changes may explain the association between SUA and renal damage in hypertensive patients. A total of 530 hypertensive patients with and without chronic kidney disease were enrolled and divided into SUA tertiles based on sex-specific cutoff values. RRI and albuminuria were greater and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was lower in the uppermost SUA tertile patients when compared wi…

Treatment of stages IIIIV of the Dupuytrens Disease using a personal approach: percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) and minimal invasive selective ap…

2013

Abstract The authors present their experience in treating 23 fingers on 20 patients affected by Dupuytrens Disease in stages III and IV of the Tubiana classification with their personal technique that involves the percutaneous needle fasciotomy followed 40 days after by a selective open aponeurectomy on the previously treated cord, by making a small cutaneous incision. The treatment requires careful selection of the patients. In fact, patients suffering from the disease for more than 5 years and all the cases with a suspicion of joint rigidity are excluded from the study. The average follow up period was approximately 48 months. 18 out of the 20 patients had excellent functional recovery. S…

Initial experience with a new method of external polyester scaffolding for infrainguinal vein grafts.

2009

Abstract Objectives This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of external polyester scaffolding in infrainguinal bypass grafting when available vein material is suboptimal due to varicosity or dilatation. Primary objectives were short-term primary patency, assisted primary patency and secondary patency. Secondary objectives were to assess the rate of graft stenoses, infections and other adverse effects related to the use of external scaffolding. Materials and methods A total of 50 consecutive patients were included in this prospective, multicentre, feasibility study from six centres. The indication for infrainguinal bypass was critical limb ischaemia (64%), severe claudication (34%) or po…

Further Delineation of Duplications of ARX Locus Detected in Male Patients with Varying Degrees of Intellectual Disability

2022

The X-linked gene encoding aristaless-related homeobox (ARX) is a bi-functional transcription factor capable of activating or repressing gene transcription, whose mutations have been found in a wide spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs); these include cortical malformations, paediatric epilepsy, intellectual disability (ID) and autism. In addition to point mutations, duplications of the ARX locus have been detected in male patients with ID. These rearrangements include telencephalon ultraconserved enhancers, whose structural alterations can interfere with the control of ARX expression in the developing brain. Here, we review the structural features of 15 gain copy-number variants …

Glyphosate-based herbicides are toxic and endocrine disruptors in human cell lines.

2009

International audience; Glyphosate-based herbicides are the most widely used across the world; they are commercialized in different formulations. Their residues are frequent pollutants in the environment. In addition, these herbicides are spread on most eaten transgenic plants, modified to tolerate high levels of these compounds in their cells. Up to 400 ppm of their residues are accepted in some feed. We exposed human liver HepG2 cells, a well-known model to study xenobiotic toxicity, to four different formulations and to glyphosate, which is usually tested alone in chronic in vivo regulatory studies. We measured cytotoxicity with three assays (Alamar Blue (R), MTT ToxiLight (R)), plus gen…

Factors associated with mortality in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis: results from the ACSRS Study.

2005

AIM: This study determines the factors associated with mortality in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. METHODS: Patients (n=1,101) with asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis greater than 50% in relation to the bulb diameter were followed up for a period of 6 to 84 (median 38) months. Stenosis was graded using duplex scanning and expressed as a percentage of the carotid bulb diameter. Clinical and biochemical risk factors were recorded. The end-points were ipsilateral ischemic stroke, cardiovascular death and all cause mortality. RESULTS: In a Cox multivariate analysis 6 factors emerged as independent predictors of risk. Age, male gender, cardiac failure, left ventricular h…

Carotid endarterectomy in heart transplant patients

2005

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the clinical outcome of carotid endarterectomy in heart transplant recipients and morphologic features of atherosclerotic plaques removed during operation. METHODS: Between April 1993 and October 2001 5 heart transplant patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis >70% underwent carotid endarterectomy with regional anesthesia, including a staged bilateral procedure in one patient. Cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol were evaluated in each patient. The plaques ( n=6) underwent histologic analysis after carotid endarterectomy. Carotid artery duplex imaging was added to the routine postoperative evaluation. RESULTS: Carotid pla…

Outcomes of complex femorodistal sequential autologous vein and biologic prosthesis composite bypass grafts

2014

Objective Femorodistal autologous vein bypass proves to be the preferred surgical therapy for long arterial occlusions and provides excellent early and long-term results in critical lower limb ischemia. Whenever vein length was insufficient and two distal outflow arteries were present, a sequential composite bypass configuration was chosen with human umbilical vein (HUV) or ovine collagen prosthesis (Omniflow II; Bio Nova International Pty Ltd, North Melbourne, Australia) as the proximal prosthetic part of the bypass. Single-center experience with this technique regarding limb salvage, graft function, secondary reinterventions, and biodegeneration is presented. Methods Between January 1998 …

Endovenous treatment of the greater saphenous vein with a 940-nm diode laser: thrombotic occlusion after endoluminal thermal damage by laser-generate…

2002

Abstract Purpose: Despite a rapid spread of the technique, very little is known about the laser-tissue interaction in endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). We evaluated EVLT of the incompetent greater saphenous vein (GSV) for efficacy, treatment-related adverse effects, and putative mechanisms of action. Methods: Twenty-six patients with 31 limbs of clinical stages C 2-6 , E P , A S,P , P R with incompetent GSV proven by means of duplex scanning were selected for EVLT in an outpatient setting. A 600-μm fiber was entered into the GSV via an 18-gauge needle below the knee and proceeded to the saphenofemoral junction (SFJ). After infiltration of tumescent local anesthesia, multiple laser pulses o…

Ischemic stroke: etiologic work-up with multidetector CT of heart and extra- and intracranial arteries

2010

[DOI:\hrefhttps://dx.doi.org/10.1148/radiol.1010080410.1148/radiol.10100804] [PubMed:\hrefhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2106292521062925]; To assess the potential of a single-session multidetector computed tomography (CT) protocol, as compared with established methods, for the etiologic work-up of acute ischemic stroke.\ Patients found to have recently experienced an ischemic stroke were recruited for this prospective study after institutional review board approval was obtained. Each patient was scheduled for two evaluation strategies: (a) a standard approach involving transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), duplex ultrasonography (US) of the n…
