Severity of Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis and Risk of Ipsilateral Hemispheric Ischaemic Events: Results from the ACSRS Study

Objectives. This study determines the risk of ipsilateral ischaemic neurological events in relation to the degree of asymptomatic carotid stenosis and other risk factors. Methods. Patients (n = 1115) with asymptomatic internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis greater than 50% in relation to the bulb diameter were followed up for a period of 6-84 (mean 37.1) months. Stenosis was graded using duplex, and clinical and biochemical risk factors were recorded. Results. The relationship between ICA stenosis and event rate is linear when stenosis is expressed by the ECST method, but S-shaped if expressed by the NASCET method. A Learning Automata Local Contribution Sampling Applied to Hydropower Production Optimisation

Learning Automata (LA) is a powerful approach for solving complex, non-linear and stochastic optimisation problems. However, existing solutions struggle with high-dimensional problems due to slow convergence, arguably caused by the global nature of feedback. In this paper we introduce a novel Learning Automata (LA) scheme to attack this challenge. The scheme is based on a parallel form of Local Contribution Sampling (LCS), which means that the LA receive individually directed feedback, designed to speed up convergence. Phylogenetic relationship of ubiquitin repeats in the polyubiquitin gene from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium

Ubiquitin is a 76-residue protein which is highly conserved among eukaryotes. Sponge (Porifera) ubiquitin, isolated from Geodia cydonium, is encoded by a gene (termed GCUBI) with six repeats, GCUBI-1 to GCUBI-6. All repeat units encode the same protein (with one exception: GCUBI-4 encodes ubiquitin with a change of Leu to Val at position 71). On the nt level the sequences of the six repeats differ considerably. All changes (except in GCUBI-4) are silent substitutions, which do not affect the protein structure. Deriving and comparing deduplication techniques using a model-based classification

Data deduplication has been a hot research topic and a large number of systems have been developed. These systems are usually seen as an inherently linked set of characteristics. However, a detailed analysis shows independent concepts that can be used in other systems. In this work, we perform this analysis on the main representatives of deduplication systems. We embed the results in a model, which shows two yet unexplored combinations of characteristics. In addition, the model enables a comprehensive evaluation of the representatives and the two new systems. We perform this evaluation based on real world data sets.
