The TES-based cryogenic anticoincidence detector for IXO: First results from large area prototypes

The technique which combines high resolution spectroscopy with imaging capability is a powerful tool to extract fundamental information in X-ray Astrophysics and Cosmology. TES (Transition Edge Sensors)-based microcalorimeters match at best the requirements for doing fine spectroscopy and imaging of both bright (high count rate) and faint (poor signal-to-noise ratio) sources. For this reason they are considered among the most promising detectors for the next high energy space missions and are being developed for use on the focal plane of the IXO (International X-ray Observatory) mission. Can the response to Omalizumab be influenced by treatment duration? A real-life study

Objective It is unknown whether Omalizumab effectiveness changes over the course of time. Our retrospective real-life study tried to analyze whether Omalizumab response may be influenced by treatment duration. Methods 340 severe asthmatics treated with Omalizumab for different periods of time were recruited. They were subdivided into 4 groups according to the Omalizumab treatment length: 60 months. Omalizumab treatment results (FEV1, exacerbations, ACT, SABA use, asthma control levels, medications used e and ICS doses) were compared. Quantitative corneal anatomy: evaluation of the effect of diabetes duration on the endothelial cell density and corneal thickness.

Purpose To evaluate the differences in endothelial cell density (ECD) and central corneal thickness (CCT) between type II diabetic patients and age-matched healthy controls, and determine the impact of time from diagnosis. Methods This is a comparative study of 77 eyes of type II diabetic patients (33 males, 44 females) and 80 eyes of healthy subjects (42 males, and 38 females) whose ages ranged from 38 to 56 years. CCT, ECD, HbA1c levels, and Goldmann tonometry were measured. A simple model for computing diffuse solar radiation

In this paper a very simple model for predicting the daily diffuse solar radiation at any Italian location using as input few extensively measured meteorological parameters is proposed. In fact the daily diffuse radiation D, MJ.m−2.day−1, here is correlated with only the relative sunshine duration sS and the noon altitude of the sun on the 15th of the month hn, degrees, by the following equation: D=7(sS−(sinhn)1.55 . The computational complexity of the criticality problems in a network with interval activity times

Abstract The paper analyzes the criticality in a network with interval activities duration times. A natural generalization of the criticality notion (for a path, an activity and an event) for the case of network with interval activity duration times is given. Stable and transient color centers in Gd3Ga5O12 crystals

The work is devoted to investigation of stable color centers (CC) that are created in Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) crystals under irradiation with γ-quanta (E = 1.25 MeV, D = 105 Gy ) as well as transient CC created in the crystals under irradiation with pulsed electron beam (E = 0.25 MeV, pulse duration 10 ns, fluence 1012 cm-2, time interval of registration 0-500 ns). On the basis of the performed study of optical absorption spectra of the as-grown and irradiated crystals it was established the correlation between a defect subsystem of as-grown crystals and a type of CC induced by radiation in the crystals. Slow oscillations are a pattern of synchronized network activity generated by the cerebral cortex. They consist of Up and Down states, which are periods of activity interspersed with periods of silence, respectively. 171 adult- and aged-onset diabetic patients treated with insulin primarily or secondarily were subjected to an attempted therapy with the additional administration of oral antidiabetic drugs. The new potent antidiabetic drug, glybenclamide (HB 419 = Daonil), was employed on a vast scale in order to carry out an oral monotherapy in the proper indications also combined with biguanides. In the 52 % of patients in study with the additional oral therapy the insulin dose could be remarkably decreased, in the 24 % of cases insulin could be at all abolished. Computational modeling and simulation are powerful tools that can be used to investigate the effects of specific drugs on cardiac electrophysiology.
