Assembling Reminders for a Particular Purpose: Paolozzi’s Ephemera, Toys and Collectibles
2019
This chapter addresses the centrality of environmental installations in Paolozzi’s late production and the relevance that the practice of “assembling reminders for a particular purpose” holds in his understanding of the artist’s profession, further constituting another aspect of affinity with Wittgenstein. In order to do so, Mantoan examines three aspects that are instrumental to understand Paolozzi’s ‘collecting mood’ that led him to assemble a rich variety of items, ephemera, toys and objects of popular culture: the first one concerns the likely origins of this attitude, grounded in his childhood years, as well as in the influence of Parisian Surrealism and American mass culture; the seco…
Ludwik Silberstein and the operator calculus
2015
W artykukle przedstawiamy zarys życiorysu Ludwika Silbersteina (1872‒1948). Omawiamy podejście do rachunku macierzowego i jego zastosowanie do podania operatorowej postaci teorii względności. Prezentujemy również listę książek i tłumaczeń z różnych języków dotyczących tej tematyki.
Działalność duszpasterska i muzyczna ks. Roberta Gajdy na ziemi kłodzkiej
2018
The article deals with the activities of Father Robert Gajda (1890–1952) in Kłodzko land in the years 1917–1924. It is based on heretofore unknown source materials from the priest’s personal file in the record office of the former Grand Deanery of Kłodzko as well as mentions in the local press. Father Gajda started his pastoral activities in the county of Kłodzko in mid-1917, when he became chaplain in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie. There he gained a reputation as a zealous priest loved by his parishioners. In the years 1919–1924 he was chaplain in Stary Wielisław, where he combined his priestly duties with academic studies at the Silesian Conservatory in Wrocław as well as activities as a composer.…
Using optical satellite and aerial imagery for automatic coastline mapping
2020
The continuous availability and rapid accessibility to multispectral data from satellite platforms within the Copernicus Programme represents a great opportunity for users in different fields of applications as: Agriculture, observation of coastal zones, monitoring land cover change. The aim of this paper is to identify a suitable method to map coastline using Sentinel-2 optical satellite image. The method provides the use of two indexes developed in remote sensing field for water environment: NDWI (Normalized difference water index) and MNDWI (Modified Normalized difference water index). Starting from the construction of maps of these indexes and, identifying appropriate threshold values, …
Extra collagen overlay prolongs the differentiated phenotype in sandwich-cultured rat hepatocytes
2018
INTRODUCTION: Sandwich-cultured rat hepatocytes (SCRH) have become an invaluable in vitro model to study hepatic drug disposition. SCRH are maintained between two layers of extracellular matrix. In this configuration, culture periods of 4days are typically applicable. The aim of the present study was to modify conventional SCRH by applying an additional collagen overlay to prolong the hepatic phenotype in SCRH and thus to extend the applicability of the model. METHODS: The cultures receiving an extra top layer ('SCRH-plus' cultures) were compared with the conventional SCRH by testing the morphology, cell functionality, metabolic capacity and Mrp2-activity. RESULTS: In the SCRH-plus cultures…
Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980: a pooled analysis of 751 population-based studies with 4.4 million participants
2016
Background One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age-standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are affecting the number of adults with diabetes. Methods We pooled data from population-based studies that had collected data on diabetes through measurement of its biomarkers. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in diabetes prevalence-defined as fasting plasma glucose of 7.0 mmol/L or higher, or history of diagnosis w…
Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: a pooled analysis of 1201 population-representat…
2021
Background: hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. Methods: we used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blood pressure treatment. We defined hypertension as having systolic blood pressure 140 mm Hg or greater, diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater, or taking medication for hypertension. We applied a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate the prev…
Mathematical models for the diffusion magnetic resonance signal abnormality in patients with prion diseases
2014
In clinical practice signal hyperintensity in the cortex and/or in the striatum on magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) is a marker of sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease (sCJD). MR diagnostic accuracy is greater than 90%, but the biophysical mechanisms underpinning the signal abnormality are unknown. The aim of this prospective study is to combine an advanced DWI protocol with new mathematical models of the microstructural changes occurring in prion disease patients to investigate the cause of MR signal alterations. This underpins the later development of more sensitive and specific image-based biomarkers. DWI data with a wide a range of echo times and diffusion weightin…
Trends in the prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis in Italy between 1991 and 2010
2012
The prevalence of asthma increased worldwide until the 1990s, but since then there has been no clear temporal pattern. The present study aimed to assess time trends in the prevalence of current asthma, asthma-like symptoms and allergic rhinitis in Italian adults from 1990 to 2010. The same screening questionnaire was administered by mail or phone to random samples of the general population (age 20-44 yrs) in Italy, in the frame of three multicentre studies: the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS) (1991-1993; n=6,031); the Italian Study on Asthma in Young Adults (ISAYA) (1998-2000; n=18,873); and the Gene Environment Interactions in Respiratory Diseases (GEIRD) study (2007-2…
