Participation in dance training in Finland : a study of motives and behavior regulation

2014

According to the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; 2000), motivation mediates the relationship between physical activity participation and well-being. In environments such as classical ballet that are highly controlling and competitive, intrinsic motives towards training and self-determined forms of behavior regulation are especially important. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the various participation motives and behavior regulations of dance students. A secondary aim was to investigate group differences across age, competitive level and dance form. Altogether 103 dance students from three schools across Southern Finland completed the Physical Activity…

Perceived autonomy support, basic needs satisfaction, motivation regulation and well-being : verification of self-determination theory in dancers in …

2010

Geme, L. 2010. Perceived autonomy support, basic need satisfaction, motivation regulation and well-being: Verification of self-determination theory in dancers in Finland. 2010 University of Jyväskylä. Master Thesis of Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences. 84 pages. Based on self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000), the main aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between perceptions of autonomy support, perceived basic need satisfaction, motivation regulation, and several indicators of physical and psychological well-being among Finnish dancers. Participants to the study were 101 Finnish professional ballet dancers (m = 35) and dance students (m…

A genomic reappraisal of symbiotic function in the aphid/Buchnera symbiosis: reduced transporter sets and variable membrane organisations.

2011

International audience; Buchnera aphidicola is an obligate symbiotic bacterium that sustains the physiology of aphids by complementing their exclusive phloem sap diet. In this study, we reappraised the transport function of different Buchnera strains, from the aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum, Schizaphis graminum, Baizongia pistaciae and Cinara cedri, using the re-annotation of their transmembrane proteins coupled with an exploration of their metabolic networks. Although metabolic analyses revealed high interdependencies between the host and the bacteria, we demonstrate here that transport in Buchnera is assured by low transporter diversity, when compared to free-living bacteria, being mostly bas…

Public note-taking on a digital platform as a workplace practice

2023

Unlike traditional note-taking with pen and paper, in which the note-taking process is only partially accessible to the co-participants, note-taking in the digitalized workplace may be done publicly, so that both the content of notes and the process of writing them are observable to the co-participants. Using multimodally oriented conversation analysis, this study focused on public note-taking in interaction sequences where the facilitator of a workplace project records the results of a workshop discussion on a digital platform. The analysis revealed that while the facilitator was entitled to decide which portions of talk are recorded, the affordances of digital technology, its publicness …

Spatial Cognition 2020/1: Book of abstracts : August 2-4, 2021, University of Latvia

2021

Spatial Cognition is concerned with the acquisition, development, representation, organization, and use of knowledge about spatial objects in real, virtual or hybrid environments and processed by human or artificial agents. Spatial Cognition includes research from different fields insofar as they are concerned with cognitive agents and space, such as cognitive and developmental psychology, linguistics, computer science, geography, cartography, philosophy, neuroscience, and education. Research issues in the field range from the investigation of human spatial cognition to mobile robot navigation, including topics such as wayfinding, spatial planning, spatial learning, internal and external re…

Monitoring bone growth using quantitative ultrasound in comparison with DXA and pQCT.

2008

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is a safe, inexpensive, and nonradiation method for bone density assessment. QUS correlates with, and predicts fragility fractures comparable to, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. However, its validity in monitoring bone growth in children is not well understood. Two hundred and fifty-eight 10-13 yr pubertal girls and 9 37-43 yr adults without diseases or history of medications known to affect bone metabolism were included in the 2-yr prospective study. Calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (cBUA) was assessed using QUS-2 (Quidel, Santa Clara, CA), speed of sound of tibial shaft (tSOS) using …

Hip viscosupplementation under ultra-sound guidance riduces NSAID consumption in symptomatic hip osteoarthritis patients in a long follow-up. Data fr…

2011

Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) consumption is strictly related to a high gastrointestinal and cardiovascular mortality and morbidity rate. Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) recommendations in patients with symptomatic hip or knee OA stated that NSAIDs should be used at the lowest effective dose but their long-term use should be avoided if possible. OARSI guidelines for the treatment of the hip OA include the use of viscosupplementation, which aims to restore physiological and rheological features of the synovial fluid. Objective: Aim of this multicentric, open and retrospective study is to investigate if NSAID consumption may be reduced by t…

Moves like Jagger - multidimensional attractiveness ratings of opposite-sex dancers

2012

Research has shown that a number of factors, including body symmetry, perceived strenght, vigour, skilfulness, and agility of movements, as well as increased variability and amplitude of the neck and trunk, can affect the attractiveness of dance moves. Perceived femininity/masculinity of body movement likely also plays a role. Here, we compare comprehensive ratings of both male and female dancers' opposite-sex attractiveness, including ratings of femininity/masculinity, with computationally-extracted movement features. Sixty-two heterosexual adult participant watched 48 short audio-visual point-light animations of eight male and eight female adult participants dancing individually to Techno…
