Big Data as a Driver for Clinical Decision Support Systems: A Learning Health Systems Perspective

2018

Big data technologies are nowadays providing health care with powerful instruments to gather and analyze large volumes of heterogeneous data collected for different purposes, including clinical care, administration, and research. This makes possible to design IT infrastructures that favor the implementation of the so-called “Learning Healthcare System Cycle,” where healthcare practice and research are part of a unique and synergic process. In this paper we highlight how “Big Data enabled” integrated data collections may support clinical decision-making together with biomedical research. Two effective implementations are reported, concerning decision support in Diabetes and in Inherited Arrh…

Information Requirements for Big Data Projects: A Review of State-of-the-Art Approaches

2018

Big data technologies are rapidly gaining popularity and become widely used, thus, making the choice of developing methodologies including the approaches for requirements analysis more acute. There is a position that in the context of the Data Warehousing (DW), similar to other Decision Support Systems (DSS) technologies, defining information requirements (IR) can increase the chances of the project to be successful with its goals achieved. This way, it is important to examine this subject in the context of Big data due to the lack of research in the field of Big data requirements analysis. This paper gives an overview of the existing methods associated with Big data technologies and requir…

INTACMATO: An IIMT-Prototype

2011

In the previous chapter, we pointed out that although users evaluate IIMT very positively, only a limited number of IIMT are offered. We assume that the main reason for this is that online sellers do not know which IIMT they should offer and what they should exactly look like. We address these two aspects in this chapter. Firstly, we review literature on IDA in the field of human interaction. We discuss several drawbacks of current approaches as well as the resulting requirements for the design of IIMT. Secondly, we break down observed decision-making behavior into typical steps decision makers apply in their decision processes. These steps indicate which IIMT would offer appropriate decisi…

Research on Application of Data Mining Methods to Diagnosing Gastric Cancer

2012

Constantly evolving technologies bring new possibilities for supporting decision making in different areas - finance, marketing, production, social area, healthcare and others. Decision support systems are widely used in medicine in developed countries and show positive results. This research reveals several possibilities of application of data mining methods to diagnosing gastric cancer, which is the fourth leading cancer type in incidence after the breast, lung and colorectal cancers. A simple decision support system model was introduced and tested using gastric cancer inquiry form statistical data. The obtained results reveal both the benefits and potential of application of DSS aimed to…

Design principles for learning analytics information systems in higher education

2020

This paper reports a design science research (DSR) study that develops, demonstrates and evaluates a set of design principles for information systems (IS) that utilise learning analytics to support learning and teaching in higher education. The initial set of design principles is created from theory-inspired conceptualisation based on the literature, and they are evaluated and revised through a DSR process of demonstration and evaluation. We evaluated the developed artefact in four courses with a total enrolment of 1,173 students. The developed design principles for learning analytics information systems (LAIS) to establish a foundation for further development and implementation of learning…

Modeling, evaluation, and scale on artificial pedestrians: a literature review

2017

Modeling pedestrian dynamics and their implementation in a computer are challenging and important issues in the knowledge areas of transportation and computer simulation. The aim of this article is to provide a bibliographic outlook so that the reader may have quick access to the most relevant works related to this problem. We have used three main axes to organize the article's contents: pedestrian models, validation techniques, and multiscale approaches. The backbone of this work is the classification of existing pedestrian models; we have organized the works in the literature under five categories, according to the techniques used for implementing the operational level in each pedestrian …

Incremental Accumulation of Information Systems Design Theory

2021

This paper proposes an organizing device for accumulation of information systems (IS) design theory components within a study but also across research studies. The proposed framework enables actors to understand the relationship over time between search spaces of information systems design science theory (ISDT) development by one and the same or different actors. The proposition rests on the notion that ISDT development is an iterative and incremental process that often happens across different research studies. Finally, we argue that with the proposed framework, ISDT knowledge is more easily transferred and combined with the search processes.

Regular Varieties of Automata and Coequations

2015

In this paper we use a duality result between equations and coequations for automata, proved by Ballester-Bolinches, Cosme-Ll´opez, and Rutten to characterize nonempty classes of deterministic automata that are closed under products, subautomata, homomorphic images, and sums. One characterization is as classes of automata defined by regular equations and the second one is as classes of automata satisfying sets of coequations called varieties of languages. We show how our results are related to Birkhoff’s theorem for regular varieties.

Varieties and Covarieties of Languages (Extended Abstract)

2013

AbstractBecause of the isomorphism (X×A)→X≅X→(A→X), the transition structure of a deterministic automaton with state set X and with inputs from an alphabet A can be viewed both as an algebra and as a coalgebra. This algebra-coalgebra duality goes back to Arbib and Manes, who formulated it as a duality between reachability and observability, and is ultimately based on Kalmanʼs duality in systems theory between controllability and observability. Recently, it was used to give a new proof of Brzozowskiʼs minimization algorithm for deterministic automata. Here we will use the algebra-coalgebra duality of automata as a common perspective for the study of both varieties and covarieties, which are …

Topic 5: Parallel and Distributed Data Management

2013

Nowadays we are facing an exponential growth of new data that is overwhelming the capabilities of companies, institutions and the society in general to manage and use it in a proper way. Ever-increasing investments in Big Data, cutting edge technologies and the latest advances in both application development and underlying storage systems can help dealing with data of such magnitude. Especially parallel and distributed approaches will enable new data management solutions that operate effectively at large scale.
