Bridging the gap between the development of advanced biomedical signal processing tools and clinical practice
2015
In the last twenty years the eld of the biomedical signal processing has known an upsurge, as witnessed by the progressively increasing number of peer-review international journals and sessions in biomedical meetings.
The Challenges and Opportunities of Human Technology
2005
Technology is for human use. It is designed to satisfy some human needs and to aid people in reaching their goals. Technology, therefore, is a part of human activities and, for this reason alone, it should always be considered within the context of human life, the human experience. This basic credo forms the foundation for the concept of human technology. Instead of seeing technology as a construction following the laws of nature, the challenge of human technology is to explore and understand how humanist and social research can contribute to the conceptualization and implementation of technology.
Social Media Campaign Metrics in Latvia
2015
Abstract The purpose of this paper was to explore which social media marketing metrics are most often used and are most important for marketing experts in Latvia. In order to achieve the aim of this paper several theoretical and practical research methods were used, such as literature analysis, surveying and grouping. First of all, theoretical research about social media metrics was conducted. Authors collected information about social media metric grouping methods and the most frequently mentioned social media metrics in the literature. The collected information was used as the foundation for the expert surveys. The expert surveys were used to gather information from Latvian marketing prof…
The tumor-agnostic treatment for patients with solid tumors: a position paper on behalf of the AIOM- SIAPEC/IAP-SIBioC-SIF Italian Scientific Societi…
2021
The personalized medicine is in a rapidly evolving scenario. The identification of actionable mutations is revolutionizing the therapeutic landscape of tumors. The morphological and histological tumor features are enriched by the extensive genomic profiling, and the first tumor-agnostic drugs have been approved regardless of tumor histology, guided by predictive and druggable genetic alterations. This new paradigm of "mutational oncology", presents a great potential to change the oncologic therapeutic scenario, but also some critical aspects need to be underlined. A process governance is mandatory to ensure the genomic testing accuracy and homogeneity, the economic sustainability, and the r…
Proposal for a computer-assisted analysis of lawful interceptions of communication
2016
This paper presents the potential for the analysis of texts when applied to interceptions carried out with the help of next-generation software. In order to do this, after a brief explanation of some of the main procedures, the article presents the results of an investigation into text data extracted from wiretapping and in-person conversations found in judicial documents. The amount of data, obtained through wiretapping and the use of bugs, has made it possible to gather important information about the dynamics that characterise how criminal organisations work. The use of wiretaps and bugs are, therefore, vital tools without which it would undoubtedly not have been possible to achieve the …
Experimental modeling for a natural landing of fuzzy sets in new domains
2015
In this paper we plan to touch upon (and briefly discuss) some (out of the many) contributions done by Enric Trillas to Fuzzy Sets Theory. We have carefully chosen, from the abundant panorama we have been allowed to gaze at in the years, two different but intertwined topics of a more methodological character, which—as such—are, obviously, not only outside the topics massively developed by the scientific community in this field but also not in the mainstream of Enric’s investigations. We picked up them, however, since we believe that they are related to a crucial problem for the further developments of fuzzy research in the subsequent years. In this perspective, they represent a very signifi…
ValWorkBench: an open source Java library for cluster validation, with applications to microarray data analysis.
2015
Background: Cluster analysis is one of the most well known activities in scientific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from statistics to computer science. It is central to the life sciences due to the advent of high throughput technologies, e.g., classification of tumors. In particular, in cluster analysis, it is of relevance to assess cluster quality and to predict the number of clusters in a dataset, if any. This latter task is usually performed via internal validation measures. Despite their potentially important role, both the use of classic internal validation measures and the design of new ones, specific for microarray data, do not seem to have grea…
Information Streaming Systems: A Review
2018
Ubiquitous nature of information determines continuous decision making always based on its stream coming from the environment, not only in the human, but also in the animal world. Communication between the users of information system is a fundamental concept for acquiring, showing, spreading, sharing and constantly increasing the knowledge about the circumstances under which they are in need to make a move all alone as well as while working in groups. In this paper, we review information stream-based systems on amount of information acceptable to facilitate the process of decision making, also in multilingual settings. We analyze the information system objects and the resource management cy…
AMUN: An Object Oriented Model For Cooperative Spatial Information Systems
1997
International audience; The diversity of spatial information systems promote the need to integrate heterogeneous spatial or geographic information systems (GIS) in a cooperative environment. We present an on going research project, called ISIS (Interoperable Spatial Information System), which aims to build an environment to support interoperability of GIS by interconnecting spatial data repositories and spatial processing resources. Our solution combines techniques from traditional interoperable information systems, spatial data modeling and distributed object oriented databases. While object oriented data modeling impact has been studied in spatial databases, research in model for distribu…
Requirement analysis abstractions for AmI system design
2015
Current trends in the AI’s evolution are going towards enriching environments with intelligence in order to support humans in their everyday life. AmI systems are plunged in the real world and humans expect to interact with them in a way that is similar to the one they have with other humans. In this kind of systems, where eliciting requirements involves several documents and stakeholders (mainly users that will be the first consumers of the system), the requirement analysis phase can be affected by incomplete, ambiguous and imprecise information. Hence, the need to find a fruitful way for knowledge management and its representation at design time. In this paper we propose a set of abstract…
