Translational medicine works through the definition of unmet medical needs, their understanding and final resolution. In this complex and multi-disciplinary process patients have always been regarded as "end-users" or no more than "data provider." Grapes: a method and a SAS program for graphical representations of assessor performances

GRAPES computes individual and global analyses of variance for sensory profiling data, consisting of several sessions in which all the panelists gave scores to all the products for a number of attributes. The fitted model takes into account the session effect. GRAPES summarizes the results by means of graphical assessor scatterplots which allow to check and to compare panelist performances, such as the way of using scale, the reliability, the discrimination power and the agreement with the panel. Over the past two decades, unbiased data-independent acquisition (DIA) approaches have gained increasing popularity in the bottom-up proteomics field. Here, we describe an ion mobility separation enhanced DIA workflow for large-scale label-free quantitative proteomics studies where starting material is limited. We set a special focus on the single pot solid-phase-enhanced sample preparation (SP3) protocol, which is well suited for the processing of quantity-limited samples.

Discovering unbounded unions of regular pattern languages from positive examples

The problem of learning unions of certain pattern languages from positive examples is considered. We restrict to the regular patterns, i.e., patterns where each variable symbol can appear only once, and to the substring patterns, which is a subclass of regular patterns of the type xαy, where x and y are variables and α is a string of constant symbols. We present an algorithm that, given a set of strings, finds a good collection of patterns covering this set. The new PAGES2k global compilation of temperature-sensitive proxies offers an unprecedented opportunity to study regional to global trends associated with orbitally driven changes in solar irradiance over the past 2 millennia. Mineral profiles of legumes and fruits through partial least squares energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence

Abstarct Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) has been employed for the determination of mineral elements in 15 varieties of legumes and 14 cherry samples. ED-XRF signals directly obtained from pulverized samples were modelized by partial least squares (PLS) using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) of a selected number of samples, after microwave assisted acid digestion, as reference data. Models were built to predict the concentration of Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, P, Sr and Zn. Average concentrations predicted were 6, 930, 7, 40, 6400, 990, 2100, 4 and 15 μg g−1 for Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, P, Sr and Zn, respectively with relative errors from 7 till 26%. …

Abstract A burgeoning body of literature suggests that poor childhood health leads to adverse health outcomes, lower educational attainment and weaker labour market outcomes in adulthood.
