Advice for health-care professionals on how to retrieve more efficiently scientifically strong and up-to-date studies on treatments by PubMed.

2008

AND trial (Title/Abstract))). Obviously, clini- cians using the PubMed Clinical Queries may be unaware of the PubMed search engine technical approach even whether they can remain unaware of what the PubMed search engine is doing. We demonstrated substantial mild retrieval bias of PubMed Clinical Queries filter focusing on therapy (narrow search) that can miss up-to-date scientifically information on treatments. This bias occurs because the search string does not consider the Britannic English variant of the term randomized (i.e., randomised). We suggested a slight change in the original search string by the addition of the term randomised as follows: (randomized controlled trial (Publicatio…

Comparison between two five year periods (1998/2002 and 2003/2007) on the production, impact and co-authorship of publications on tobacco and smoking…

2010

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to compare the production, impact and co-authorship of publications by Spanish authors on smoking and tobacco between two time periods (1998/2002 vs. 2003/2007) using Science Citation Index (SCI). Methods The literature search was performed in the SCI-Expanded on 20 November 2008. All types of documents by Spanish authors were selected. The search was restricted to the title, and the key words used were “smok*” and “tobac*”. The statistical analysis was descriptive (95% CI). Results A total of 588 documents were retrieved, with 399 (67.85%) original papers, 54 (9.18%) letters to the editor and 35 (5.95%) editorials. Productivity increased from th…

[Evolution and scientific impact of research grants from the spanish society of cardiology and spanish heart foundation (2000-2006)].

2011

Abstract Introduction and objectives The Sociedad Espanola de Cardiologia (Spanish Society of Cardiology) every year awards grants to finance research in the field of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study is to identify the impact of these investments during the period 2000-2006 from the subsequently published articles in scientific journals. Methods Using the identifying data of each project as search terms, all articles that resulted from these grants were located in the Spanish Indice Medico Espanol and Indice Bibliografico Espanol en Ciencias de la Salud databases, and in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Scopus. Descriptive statistical analysis of these articles included typ…

Nocturnal intermittent hypoxia predicts prevalent hypertension in the European Sleep Apnoea Database cohort study.

2014

Systemic hypertension is associated with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) but the pathophysiological mechanisms are incompletely understood. A collaborative European network of 24 sleep centres established a European Sleep Apnoea Database to evaluate cardiovascular morbidity associated with OSAS.11 911 adults referred with suspected OSAS between March 2007 and September 2013 underwent overnight sleep studies, either cardiorespiratory polygraphy or polysomnography. We compared the predictive value of the apnoea–hypopnoea index (AHI) and 4% oxygen desaturation index (ODI) for prevalent hypertension, adjusting for relevant covariates including age, smoking, obesity, dyslipidaemia and d…

THE EUROPEAN SLEEP APNOEA DATABASE (ESADA) -- Report from 22 European Sleep Laboratories

2011

The European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) reflects a network of 22 sleep disorder centres in Europe enabled by a COST action B26 programme. This ongoing project aims to describe differences in standard clinical care of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and to establish a resource for genetic research in this disorder. Patients with suspected OSA are consecutively included and followed up according to local clinical standards. Anthropometrics, medical history, medication, daytime symptoms and sleep data (polysomnography or cardiorespiratory polygraphy) are recorded in a structured web-based report form. 5,103 patients (1,426 females, mean±SD age 51.8±12.6 yrs, 79.4% with apnoea/h…

Impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on the outcomes of patients with peripheral artery disease.

2019

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are both related with high in-hospital mortality. We aimed to investigate the impact of COPD on the in-hospital outcomes in PAD.PAD patients were selected based on ICD-code I70.2 of the German nationwide database, stratified for COPD and compared regarding adverse in-hospital outcomes.Between 01/2005-12/2015, 5,611,827 inpatients (64.8% males) were diagnosed with PAD; of those, 13.6% were coded additionally with COPD. Overall, 277,894 PAD patients (5.0%) died during in-hospital course. Prevalence of cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer (12.1% vs. 7.0%, P  0.001) was higher in PAD patients with COPD compare…

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps impact in severe asthma patients: Evidences from the Severe Asthma Network Italy (SANI) registry

2020

Abstract Background The clinical and laboratory features of patients enrolled in the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry, a web-based observatory collecting demographic, clinical, functional and inflammatory data of patients with severe asthma were evaluated, with a special emphasis to chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Methods For each eligible patients the following information has been collected: demographic data, clinical features, asthma control in the previous month according to the GINA (Global INitiative for Asthma) Guidelines and standardized questionnaires, concomitant regular and on demand treatments and inflammatory markers. Results 695 patients wit…

Sociodemographic factors associated with time to discharge for hospitalised patients with asthma and asthma exacerbation using the Ghana Health Servi…

2021

ObjectiveData on asthma hospitalisations are a useful source of patient morbidity information. In Ghana, the length of stay (LoS) and sociodemographic factors of patients hospitalised for asthma and its exacerbation are understudied. We aimed to investigate the time to discharge and assessed factors associated with length of hospital stays of asthmatics in Ghana.MethodsRetrospective analysis of hospitalised patient with asthma records between 2012 and 2017 from the nationwide Ghana Health Service District Health Information Management System 2 database. We calculated the cumulative incidence function for discharge stratified by age group and sex. Multivariable Cox regression was used to inv…

The European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) ERS Clinical Research Collaboration: past, present and future

2018

There are some critical issues that determine the sustainability of the ESADA project in the long term. We need to develop strategies to maintain high data quality and enable new research activities related to the database. Funding may be provided by public and academic institutions or by collaborations with industry. We plan to submit EU research or public health projects, and cooperation with other cohorts will help to reach the critical mass necessary to cover the entire European area. Again, the CRC is a very good opportunity to pursue this goal, not only for the visibility provided by the endorsement of a leading society like the ERS, but also for the practical support in submission of…

Impact of video-assisted thoracic surgery approach on postoperative mortality after lobectomy in octogenarians.

2019

The number of octogenarians who present with localized lung cancer eligible for surgical resection is increasing. Video-assisted thoracic surgery lobectomy has been widely accepted, but the potential benefit in octogenarians is not well established, especially for postoperative mortality. This study aimed to assess the impact of a video-assisted thoracic surgery approach on postoperative mortality after lobectomy for lung cancer in octogenarians. From January 2005 to December 2016, all patients aged more than 80 years who received lobectomy treatment for lung cancer were retrieved from the French Administrative Database. The end point was 30-day postoperative death. A propensity score was ge…
