Urine cadmium levels and albuminuria in a general population from Spain: A gene-environment interaction analysis

Background: The interaction of cadmium with genes involved in oxidative stress, cadmium metabolism and transport pathways on albuminuria can provide biological insight on the relationship between cadmium and albuminuria at low exposure levels. Relationship between elastase and total antioxidant status in young subjects with recent myocardial infarction

In a group of young subjects with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (68 men and 7 women; mean age 39.6 ± 5.7 years) we examined the plasma concentration of elastase, the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and the total antioxidant status (TAS) at the initial stage of AMI. In this group we found an increase of elastase (p <0.001) and TBARS (p < 0.001) and a decrease of TAS (p < 0.001). A statistical correlation was observed in the whole group of AMI patients between plasma elastase and TAS (p < 0.01) and this correlation was more statistically significant in patients with more risk factors and not in those with more involved vessels.

Vitiligo susceptibility and catalase gene (CAT) polymorphisms in sicilian population

BACKGROUND Catalase gene (CAT) polymorphisms were analyzed as responsible for the deficiency of catalase enzyme activity and concomitant accumulation of excessive hydrogen peroxide in vitiligo patients. Catalase is a well-known oxidative stress regulator that could play an important role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. Pre-eclampsia--a workshop report.

The aims of this workshop on pre-eclampsia were two-fold. The first half aimed to provide an update on the influence of oxygen and oxidative stress on the development of preeclampsia. The session, with four speakers, was chaired by Fiona Lyall. The second part of the workshop was more clinically orientated addressing new patho-physiological and clinical findings. This session also had four speakers and was chaired by Rudi Seufert.

Cell Death and Oxidative Damage in Inflammatory Myopathies

There is evidence that muscle fibers in denervating disorders and muscular dystrophies undergo apoptosis. In 21 patients with autoimmune inflammatory myopathies, we found no features of muscle fiber apoptosis such as DNA fragmentation or expression of apoptosis-related proteins. However, muscle fibers in myositis displayed distinct up-regulation of inducible and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS). While inducible NOS was distinctly up-regulated on the sarcolemma of all kinds of muscle fibers neuronal NOS displayed increased expression in the sarcoplasm of damaged as well as atrophic muscle fibers. In this paper, we review data of recent literature on the distribution in centenarians of candidate germ-line polymorphisms that likely affect the individual chance to reach the extreme limit of human life. On the basis of previous observations on the immunology, endocrinology and cellular biology of centenarians we focused on genes that regulate immune responses and inflammation (IL-6, IL-1 cluster, IL-10), genes involved in the insulin/IGF-I signalling pathway and genes that counteract oxidative stress (PON1). Heat shock protein-27 protects human bronchial epithelial cells against oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis: possible implication in asthma.

Inflammation of the human bronchial epithelium, as observed in asthmatics, is characterized by the selective death of the columnar epithelial cells, which desquamate from the basal cells. Tissue repair initiates from basal cells that resist inflammation. Here, we have evaluated the extent of apoptosis as well as the Hsp27 level of expression in epithelial cells from bronchial biopsy samples taken from normal and asthmatic subjects. Hsp27 is a chaperone whose expression protects against oxidative stress. We report that in asthmatic subjects the basal epithelium cells express a high level of Hsp27 but no apoptotic morphology.
