2019
The vast majority of Spaniards is in favor of a constitutional reform. Before the undertaking of this reform, there are some previous conditions that need to be granted: a rational debate on ideas; a reduction of the political and social tension; a common goodwill to reach a consensus; and some loyalty during negotiations. As many other scholars, the author agrees that instead of talking about a constitutional reform, it would be more adequate to talk about some constitutional reforms, that should be undertaken gradually. He also stresses that these reforms do not imply the opening of a new constituent process. In addition, he underlines the fact that the Catalan crisis should not be the tr…
El mito de la historia del arte
2005
2002
The decree by which the Cortes of 22 May 1809 were summoned by the Junta Suprema of the realm marked the beginning of a political debate of great intensity in Spain. Through this debate the different political positions and the various ideological profiles arising from the deep constitutional crisis of 1808 became gradually crystallised. This article approaches that debate from the regional perspective of one of the territories or provinces of the Bourbon monarchy—namely, the old Kingdom of Valencia— and by examining three figures relatively unknown to historians, José Canga Argüelles, Bartolomé Ribelles and Francisco Xavier Borrul. Through an analysis of their works we can identify the div…

Europe’s Path to Public Reason
2012
Chapter 7 highlights how addressing public issues publicly is a main target of European institutions, considering their commitment to the identification of shared values and the protection of rights. In consideration of this, it is reasonable to ask whether the “Public Reason” set forth by Rawls can be somehow applied to Europe’s current perspective, understanding it to be the ruling criterion governing public issues. A major obstacle is to be found in the anti-pluralistic attitude which is widespread across the European states. However, constitutionalism, which is nowadays widely rooted on a global scale, makes contemporary political communities to characterize by disagreement and by the n…
This time it’s different? Effects of the Eurovision Debate on young citizens’ and its consequence for EU democracy – evidence from a quasi-experiment…
2017
For the very first time in EU history, the 2014 EP elections provided citizens with the opportunity to influence the nomination of the Commission President by casting a vote for the main Europarties’ ‘lead candidates’. By subjecting the position of the Commission President to an open political contest, many experts have formulated the expectation that heightened political competition would strengthen the weak electoral connection between EU citizens and EU legislators, which some consider a root cause for the EU’s lack of public support. In particular, this contest was on display in the so-called ‘Eurovision Debate’, a televised debate between the main contenders for the Commission Presiden…
