Application of Pinhole Plasma Jet Activated Water against Escherichia coli, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Decontamination of Pesticide Residues…

Plasma activated water (PAW) generated from pinhole plasma jet using gas mixtures of argon (Ar) and 2% oxygen (O2) was evaluated for pesticide degradation and microorganism decontamination (i.e., Escherichia coli and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) in chili (Capsicum annuum L.). A flow rate of 10 L/min produced the highest concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 369 mg/L. Results showed that PAW treatment for 30 min and 60 min effectively degrades carbendazim and chlorpyrifos by about 57% and 54% in solution, respectively. Bioterrorism attack to large harbors is likely, simply by the discharge of intentionally infected ship’s ballast water. Therefore, the ships must be equipped with the control probes of extensive microbial growth in the ballast water tanks to avoid such a scenario. Green Analytical Chemistry

We discuss the origins and the fundamentals of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC), based on the literature published about clean, environmentally-friendly or GAC methods. We pay special attention to the strategies and the tools available to make sample-pretreatment and analytical methods greener. We consider that the main principles are to replace toxic reagents, to miniaturize and to automate methods, making it possible to reduce dramatically the amounts of reagents consumed and wastes generated, so reducing or avoiding side effects of analytical methods. We also consider on-line decontamination or passivation of wastes to be of special interest in making analytical chemistry sustainable.

A battery of toxicity tests as indicators of decontamination in composting oily waste.

Heterogeneous oily waste from an old dumping site was composted in three windrows constructed from different proportions of waste, sewage sludge, and bark. The objectives of this pilot study were to examine the usefulness of composting as a treatment method for this particular waste and to study decontamination in the composting process by using a battery of toxicity tests. Complete decontamination and regeneration of DNA purification silica colum

Silica columns are among the most used DNA purification systems, allowing a good yield of high-quality nucleic acids without organic extractions. Silica column regeneration protocols reported up to now to remove DNA traces are time-consuming, and their effectiveness on genomic DNA has not been demonstrated. Here we report a very rapid regeneration procedure that ensures no DNA carryover, independent of its size, without impairing column efficiency. The method takes advantage of the improved DNA removal by low concentrations of Triton X-100.
