Design of measurement-based correlation models for shadow fading

2010

This paper deals with the design of measurement-based correlation models for shadow fading. Based on the correlation model, we design a simulation model using the sumof-sinusoids (SOS) method to enable the simulation of spatial lognormal processes characterizing real-world shadow fading scenarios. The model parameters of the simulation model are computed by applying the L p -norm method (LPNM). This method facilitates an excellent fitting of the simulation model's autocorrelation function (ACF) to that of measured channels. Our study includes an evaluation of all important statistical quantities of the proposed measurement-based simulation model, such as the probability density function (PD…

Non-linear Invertible Representation for Joint Statistical and Perceptual Feature Decorrelation

2000

The aim of many image mappings is representing the signal in a basis of decorrelated features. Two fundamental aspects must be taken into account in the basis selection problem: data distribution and the qualitative meaning of the underlying space. The classical PCA techniques reduce the statistical correlation using the data distribution. However, in applications where human vision has to be taken into account, there are perceptual factors that make the feature space uneven, and additional interaction among the dimensions may arise. In this work a common framework is presented to analyse the perceptual and statistical interactions among the coefficients of any representation. Using a recen…

Approaching the limits of multiple scattering decorrelation: 3D light-scattering apparatus utilising semiconductor lasers

2007

Light scattering as a function of scattering angle can be regarded as a standard method to investigate the dynamics of dilute colloidal suspensions. Concentrated suspensions, which are of interest if interactions between the particles are to be investigated, usually show strong multiple scattering. Decorrelation of multiple scattered light, which isolates single scattering events at the expense of a reduced signal-to-noise ratio, has been proven to work using the two-colour crosscorrelation scheme.

Dynamic light scattering by preserved skimmed cow milk: A comparison of two-colour and three-dimensional cross-correlation experiments

2008

We investigate the dynamic light scattering of preserved skimmed cow milk and compare the performance of a standard two-colour (2C) cross-correlation setup with the recently developed three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation setup. Undiluted milk could only be investigated using the 3D setup because of too low signal-to-noise ratio of the 2C setup. A tenfold diluted milk, however, could be investigated by both setups, and comparable results for the dynamics of the sample were obtained thus demonstrating the equivalence of the decorrelation schemes. On the other hand, we found that the dynamics of the milk is strongly altered upon dilution. This finding elucidates the benefits of the new 3D …

Comparative study of multi-2D, Full 3D and hybrid strategies for multi/hyperspectral image compression

2009

In this paper, we investigate appropriate strategies for multi/hyperspectral image compression. In particular, we compare the classic multi-2D compression strategy and two different implementations of 3D strategies (Full 3D and hybrid). All strategies are combined with a PCA decorrelation stage to optimize performance. For multi-2D and hybrid strategies, we propose a weighted version of PCA. Finally, for consistent evaluation, we propose a larger comparison framework than the conventionally used PSNR. The results are significant and show the weaknesses and strengths of each strategy.

Visual aftereffects and sensory nonlinearities from a single statistical framework

2015

When adapted to a particular scenery our senses may fool us: colors are misinterpreted, certain spatial patterns seem to fade out, and static objects appear to move in reverse. A mere empirical description of the mechanisms tuned to color, texture, and motion may tell us where these visual illusions come from. However, such empirical models of gain control do not explain why these mechanisms work in this apparently dysfunctional manner. Current normative explanations of aftereffects based on scene statistics derive gain changes by (1) invoking decorrelation and linear manifold matching/equalization, or (2) using nonlinear divisive normalization obtained from parametric scene models. These p…

A Comparative Study and an Evaluation Framework of Multi/Hyperspectral Image Compression

2009

In this paper, we investigate different approaches for multi/hyperspectral image compression. In particular, we compare the classic multi-2D compression approach and two different implementations of 3D approach (full 3D and hybrid) with regards to variations in spatial and spectral dimensions. All approaches are combined with a weighted Principal Component Analysis (PCA) decorrelation stage to optimize performance. For consistent evaluation, we propose a larger comparison framework than the conventionally used PSNR, including eight metrics divided into three families. The results show the weaknesses and strengths of each approach.

Three-dimensional dynamic light scattering

1999

Abstract We describe the employment of a novel light-scattering scheme for the decorrelation of multiple scattering in strongly turbid samples. The three-dimensional scheme, which has been proposed already theoretically, shows certain advantages compared with the two-colour apparatus, which is commercially available. We describe our set-up in detail; features are the use of modern semiconductor laser diodes and contemporary single-mode fibre receivers. We show experimentally that the optimal signal-to-noise ratio (or intercept) β opt = 0.20, which is obtainable with our set-up, can be quantitatively calculated from the measured uncertainties in the alignment. In particular, we give a detail…
