Guerra e finanza nella Sicilia del XVII secolo. La partecipazione del Regno alla politica internazionale della monarchia spagnola
2022
In recent decades, the abandonment of the teleological perspective concerning the formation of the modern state has made it possible to rethink the nature of the European monarchies between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and to read the center/periphery pair no longer in antithetical terms, but of integration and complementarity. If these historiographical acquisitions had significant implications in political and institutional studies, they were no less important in those lines of research that had as their focus the military sphere and its financing. The essay examines the participation of the Kingdom of Sicily in the international politics of the Spanish Monarchy, in order to un…
La Sicilia nel Mediterraneo di Cervantes da Lepanto a Capo Corvo (1571-1613)
2018
The essay outlines the military- strategic role played by the Kingdom of Sicily in the Mediterranean between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and focuses on the major issues – already debated by contemporaries – regarding the relationship between land defense and sea …
Proteasome comprising a beta1 inducible subunit acts as a negative regulator of NADPH oxidase during elicitation of plant defense reactions.
2005
Elicitation of defense reactions in tobacco by cryptogein, triggered a production of active oxygen species (AOS) via the NADPH oxidase, NtrbohD, and an accumulation of beta1din, a defense induced beta-type subunit of 20S proteasome. The proteasome inhibitor, MG132, stimulated this AOS production. Tobacco cells transformed with sense constructs of beta1din showed an inhibition of the AOS production following elicitin treatment, whereas the antisense transformed cells showed a strongly enhanced AOS production. In cells transformed with sense construct of beta1din, the NtrbohD transcripts failed to be induced by cryptogein as observed in control and antisense transformed cells. Conversely, in …
Lipid and fatty acid variations inCiona intestinalis ovary after tri-n-butyltin(IV)chloride exposure
2005
Reduction of total lipids (TL) content and significant variations of triglyceride (TG) and phospholipid (PL) fractions were observed as a consequence of exposure of Ciona intestinalis ovaries to tributyltin chloride (TBTCL) solutions. In particular, an evident TG decrease and a PL increase were observed, which probably provoked an increment in membrane fluidity, because of the high concentration of long chain fatty acids and, as a consequence, PL. This could be a cell adaptive standing mechanism towards the pollutants, as observed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Also the increase in the content of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), important in the synthesis of compounds such as prostagla…
Doctrinal Alternatives to Self-Defence Against Non-State Actors
2017
This contribution examines the problem of what is the legal basis for armed interventions carried out on foreign territory in response to terrorist attacks. It proposes a solution other than the use of the right of self-defence provided for in Article 51 of the UN Charter, based on the idea that a State cannot claim full respect for its sovereignty as a right if it does not fulfil the functions that come with sovereignty as a duty. If these functions of protection of other States' rights are not fulfilled, then, the international community, or, if this is not possible, the victim State directly, could take over from the negligent local authorities in performing their law enforcement functio…
Unity bāzēta “Tower Defense” spēle
2022
Kvalifikācijas darba ietvaros tika izstrādāta Unity bāzēta “Tower Defense” lietotne, kuras autors ir Vitālijs Aņisimovs un darba vadītājs Dr.sc.comp. Edgars Diebelis.
Assessment of the legality of the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen
2022
A coalition of primarily Arab states commenced airstrikes in Yemen at the behest of its interim government leader, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi on March 25, 2015. Codenamed Operation Decisive Storm, this military operation garnered little to no international uproar, despite taking place in an active civil war. Merely noted by the United Nations Security Council, the operation was primarily justified on the basis of self-defense. However, legal assessment reveals that the justification is misapplied and unwarranted. Moreover, the invitation under closer examination proves to be a hasten attempt to remedy deeply rooted domestic problems with instruments of international law disregarding the already…
The immune role of the arthropod exoskeleton.
2012
7 pages; International audience; The exoskeleton or cuticle of arthropods is an important feature that contributes to their great success in colonising numerous habitats on earth. It has numerous functions among which to provide protection against parasites. Whereas often regarded as a simple physical barrier to the outside world, the immune protection of the cuticle is slightly more complex than that. Here, we provide an overview of the cuticle defensive traits against parasites and examine their variation as a response to parasitism. It appears that the cuticle is an efficient line of defense, which includes physical, biochemical and physiological defensive components that are potentially…
Induced resistance as a strategy for vineyard protection
2012
National audience; As most grown grapevine Vitis vinifera varieties are susceptible to diseases such as downy and powdery mildews, numerous treatments are required to ensure a satisfactory yield and harvest quality. However, the use of phytochemical fungicides has serious drawbacks: some of them are potentially harmful for the environment and human health and contribute to the selection of resistant pathogen strains. Nowadays, in an objective of sustainable viticulture, there is increasing societal request, political incitation and winegrower’s awareness to reduce the use of pesticides. For these reasons, alternative strategies of protection are under research. In our laboratory, we are stu…
