Effect of the junction angle on turbulent flow at a hydraulic confluence
2018
Despite the existing knowledge concerning the hydrodynamic processes at river junctions, there is still a lack of information regarding the particular case of low width and discharge ratios, which are the typical conditions of mountain river confluences. Aiming at filling this gap, laboratory and numerical experiments were conducted, comparing the results with literature findings. Ten different confluences from 45 ∘ to 90 ∘ were simulated to study the effects of the junction angle on the flow structure, using a numerical code that solves the 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with the k- ϵ turbulence closure model. The results showed that the higher the junction angle, the …
Mechanical behaviour of Mater-Bi/wood flour composites: a statistical approach
2008
Interest in biocomposites (lignocellulosic filled biopolymers) started in the 90s, due to environmental advantages, related to the full biodegradability of both matrix and filler, economical issues (organic fillers usually come from sawmill or agriculture wastes) and aesthetical issues (wood filled biopolymers could be particularly pleasant if used for indoor furnishing and automotive interior). In this work, a method for a systematic study of the properties of Mater-Bi®/wood flour composites is presented. A two-level full factorial model was built. It allows investigating the effects of multiple operative variables on the observed properties, their contributions, their optimal combinations…
Extension of Deflection Coefficient for Linear Fusion of Quantized Reports in Cooperative Sensing
2014
Maximizing the so-called deflection coefficient is commonly used as an effective approach to design cooperative sensing schemes with low computational complexity. In this paper, an extension to the deflection coefficient is proposed which captures the effects of the quantization processes at the sensing nodes, jointly with the impact of linear combining at the fusion center. The proposed parameter is then used to formulate a new mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem as a fast suboptimal method to design a distributed detection scenario where the nodes report their sensing outcomes to a fusion center through nonideal digital links. Numerical evaluations show that the performance of the…
Digital zenith camera for vertical deflection determination
2012
Recent accomplishments in advancement of accurate astrometric reference star catalogues, development of digital imaging technology, high accuracy tiltmeter technology, and geocentric coordinate availability provided by GNSS, have made possible accurate, fast and automated determination of vertical deflections using astrometric methods. Zenith cameras for this kind of measurements have been developed or are being developed by several research groups. The paper describes a research project by Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation, intended to design a portable digital zenith camera for vertical deflection determination with 0.1” expected accuracy. Camera components are described, proposed d…
Deguna vārsta kustīguma kvantitatīvs novērtējums
2018
Search for magnetically-induced signatures in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays measured at the Pierre Auger Observatory
2020
We search for signals of magnetically-induced effects in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We apply two different methods. One is a search for sets of events that show a correlation between their arrival direction and the inverse of their energy, which would be expected if they come from the same point-like source, they have the same electric charge and their deflection is relatively small and coherent. We refer to these sets of events as "multiplets". The second method, called "thrust", is a principal axis analysis aimed to detect the elongated patterns in a region of interest. We study the sensitivity of both methods using a …
Steering of a Sub-GeV electron beam through planar channeling enhanced by rechanneling
2014
We report the observation of efficient steering of a 855 MeV electron beam at MAMI (MAinzer MIkrotron) facilities by means of planar channeling and volume reflection in a bent silicon crystal. A $30.5\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ thick plate of (211) oriented Si was bent to cause quasimosaic deformation of the (111) crystallographic planes, which were used for coherent interaction with the electron beam. The experimental results are analogous to those recorded some years ago at energy higher than 100 GeV, which is the only comparable study to date. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that rechanneling plays a considerable role in a particle's dynamics and hinders the spoiling…
Optimizing artificial neural networks for the evaluation of asphalt pavement structural performance
2019
Artificial Neural Networks represent useful tools for several engineering issues. Although they were adopted in several pavement-engineering problems for performance evaluation, their application on pavement structural performance evaluation appears to be remarkable. It is conceivable that defining a proper Artificial Neural Network for estimating structural performance in asphalt pavements from measurements performed through quick and economic surveys produces significant savings for road agencies and improves maintenance planning. However, the architecture of such an Artificial Neural Network must be optimised, to improve the final accuracy and provide a reliable technique for enriching d…
Random vibration mitigation of beams via tuned mass dampers with spring inertia effects
2019
The dynamics of beams equipped with tuned mass dampers is of considerable interest in engineering applications. Here, the purpose is to introduce a comprehensive framework to address the stochastic response of the system under stationary and non-stationary loads, considering inertia effects along the spring of every tuned mass damper applied to the beam. For this, the key step is to show that a tuned mass damper with spring inertia effects can be reverted to an equivalent external support, whose reaction force on the beam depends only on the deflection of the attachment point. On this basis, a generalized function approach provides closed analytical expressions for frequency and impulse res…
Flexural Behavior of Steel Fibrous Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams
2012
Experimental research was carried out regarding the flexural behavior of deep beams cast with plain and fibrous concrete with hooked steel fibers, and subjected to monotonic vertical loads. Four deep fiber-reinforced concrete beams were cast. Two of them were made of plain concrete with main and web steel reinforcements (RC), and two were made of hooked steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) with main steel reinforcements. The experimental results show the brittle behavior of reinforced deep RC members characterized by crushing of concrete struts and fracture of web steel bars. SFRC deep beams exhibit higher strength and, above all, ductility with respect to RC members due to the bridging a…
