How does university teachers’ pedagogical training meet topical challenges raised by educational research? A case study from Finland

Through a literature review, this study identified research themes related to university pedagogy and examined how these themes appear in the curricula of university pedagogy courses and in the experiences of the participants and trainers of these courses at a Finnish research university. The literature review produced a multidimensional model of the relationships between identified themes, which can be used as an analytical tool for examining pedagogical training. Analysis of the courses revealed a need to broaden the understanding of the course contents and practices and their alignment to global, societal, and labour-market needs. peerReviewed

Eight Hypotheses on Technology Use and Psychosocial Wellbeing: A Bicultural Phenomenological Study of Gaming during the COVID-19 Pandemic

AbstractIn this nonconfirmatory qualitative study, we pursued a range of hypotheses regarding how gaming operates in the lives and psychosocial wellbeing of those who actively play videogames during a crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Informed by an explorative survey (N = 793), interpretive phenomenological analysis was applied to interview data from actively gaming Chinese (n = 10) and Finnish (n = 10) participants. Maģistra darba tēma ir „Iedzīvotāju novecošanās un tās ietekme uz pensiju sistēmas ilgtspēju Latvijā un Igaunijā” un tā mērķis ir noskaidrot, kā iedzīvotāju novecošanās ietekmē pensiju sistēmas ilgtspēju. Pētījumam izvirzīti šādi uzdevumi: demogrāfisko procesu un pensiju sistēmas teorijas izpēte, Latvijas un Igaunijas demogrāfisko norišu attīstību un abu valstu pensiju sistēmu salīdzinājums, jomas ekspertu intervēšana, lai uzzinātu aktualitātes un problēmas demogrāfisko procesu un pensiju jautājumos. Pētījuma rezultātā konstatēts, ka iedzīvotāju novecošanās nav lielākais drauds pensiju sistēmas ilgtspējai ne Latvijā, ne Igaunijā.

Following the money? : Performance based funding and the changing publication patterns of Finnish academics

Research on how performance-based funding influences the behaviour and performance of academics is limited in Europe. In this study, we investigate the changing publication patterns among Finnish academics associated with the introduction of awarding funding for publications within specific journals in the national performance-based funding model. We find evidence, particularly in the social sciences, and to a lesser extent humanities, that Finnish academics increasingly target international (English-language) publication outlets and lower-tiered journals. This article uses historical and sociological research as the basis for a philosophically argued thesis about the negative educational consequences of the atomization of the family structure. Carle Zimmerman’s theory of the social causality involved in the atomistic family structure is illustrated with an example of a Bolshevik social experiment and applied to the atomization of the modern Western family as shown by contemporary social science research.
