Polymer brushes on flat and curved surfaces: How computer simulations can help to test theories and to interpret experiments
2012
Theoretical descriptions of static properties of polymer brushes are reviewed, with an emphasis on monodisperse macromolecules grafted to planar, cylindrical, or spherical substrates. Blob concepts and resulting scaling relations are outlined, and various versions of the self-consistent field theory are summarized: the classical approximation and the strong stretching limit, as well as the lattice formulation. The physical justification of various inherent assumptions is discussed, and computer simulation results addressing the test of the validity of these approximations are reviewed. Also, alternative theories, such as the single chain mean field theory and the density functional theory, …
Prospective computational design and in vitro bio-analytical tests of new chemical entities as potential selective CYP17A1 lyase inhibitors
2019
[EN] The development and advancement of prostate cancer (PCa) into stage 4, where it metastasize, is a major problem mostly in elder males. The growth of PCa cells is stirred up by androgens and androgen receptor (AR). Therefore, therapeutic strategies such as blocking androgens synthesis and inhibiting AR binding have been explored in recent years. However, recently approved drugs (or in clinical phase) failed in improving the expected survival rates for this metastatic-castration resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients. The selective CYP17A1 inhibition of 17,20-lyase route has emerged as a novel strategy. Such inhibition blocks the production of androgens everywhere they are found in t…
Progress and Challenges in the Calculation of Electronic Excited States
2011
A detailed understanding of the properties of electronic excited states and the reaction mechanisms that molecules undergo after light irradiation is a fundamental ingredient for following light-driven natural processes and for designing novel photonic materials. The aim of this review is to present an overview of the ab initio quantum chemical and time-dependent density functional theory methods that can be used to model spectroscopy and photochemistry in molecular systems. The applicability and limitations of the different methods as well as the main frontiers are discussed. To illustrate the progress achieved by excited-state chemistry in the recent years as well as the main challenges f…
2p x-ray absorption spectroscopy of 3d transition metal systems
2021
Abstract This review provides an overview of the different methods and computer codes that are used to interpret 2p x-ray absorption spectra of 3d transition metal ions. We first introduce the basic parameters and give an overview of the methods used. We start with the semi-empirical multiplet codes and compare the different codes that are available. A special chapter is devoted to the user friendly interfaces that have been written on the basis of these codes. Next we discuss the first principle codes based on band structure, including a chapter on Density Functional theory based approaches. We also give an overview of the first-principle multiplet codes that start from a cluster calculati…
Density functional study of two-dimensionalHe4clusters
2005
Binding energies and density profiles of two-dimensional systems of liquid He-4 with different geometries are studied by means of a zero-range density functional adjusted to reproduce the line tension obtained in a previous diffusion Monte Carlo calculation (lambda_{DMC}=0.121 K/A). It is shown that this density functional provides accurate results for the binding energy of large clusters with a reasonable computational effort.
On the Importance of Ligand-Centered Excited States in the Emission of Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes
2021
The photophysical behavior of the cyclometalating Ir(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]+, where Hppy is 2-phenylpyridine and bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine (complex 1), and [Ir(diFppy)2(dtb-bpy)]+, where diFppy is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine and dtb-bpy is 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridine (complex 2), has been theoretically investigated by performing density functional theory calculations. The two complexes share the same molecular skeleton, complex 2 being derived from complex 1 through the addition of fluoro and tert-butyl substituents, but present notable differences in their photophysical properties. The remarkable difference in their emission quantum yields (0.196 for complex 1 in dichloromet…
Structure–property relationship of isomeric diphenylethenyl-disubstituted dimethoxycarbazoles
2015
Isomeric 3,6-dimethoxy- and 2,7-dimethoxycarbazoles containing diphenylethenyl moieties were synthesized by condensation of the appropriate dimethoxycarbazoles with diphenylacetaldehyde. The solid-state structures and the molecular order of the compounds were proven by X-ray crystallography. Both compounds were found to be capable of glass formation with comparable glass transition temperatures (70–71 °C). They exhibited high thermal stabilities, with the 5% weight loss temperatures exceeding 375 °C. The isomer having diphenylethenyl groups at C-3 and C-6 positions and methoxy groups at C-2 and C-7 positions (3a) exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE), while its counterpart having dip…
An Experimental and Computational Study on the Effect of Al(OiPr)3 on Atom-Transfer Radical Polymerization and on the Catalyst-Dormant Chain Halogen …
2005
International audience; Compound Al(OiPr)3 is shown to catalyze the halide-exchange process leading from [Mo(Cp)Cl2(iPrN=CH-CH=NiPr)] and CH3CH(X)COOEt (X=Br, I) to the mixed-halide complexes [Mo(Cp)ClX(iPrN=CH-CH=NiPr)]. On the other hand, no significant acceleration is observed for the related exchange between [MoX3(PMe3)3] (X=Cl, I) and PhCH(Br)CH3, by analogy to a previous report dealing with the RuII complex [RuCl2(PPh3)3]. A DFT computation study, carried out on the model complexes [Mo(Cp)Cl2(PH3)2], [MoCl3(PH3)3], and [RuCl2(PH3)3], and on the model initiators CH3CH(Cl)COOCH3, CH3Cl, and CH3Br, reveals that the 16-electron RuII complex is able to coordinate the organic halide RX in a…
Thermochemical analysis of the OH+C2H4→C2H4OH reaction using accurate theoretical methods
2001
Abstract The radical addition of hydroxyl radical to ethene has been investigated using ab initio methods and density functional theory. The structure and energetics of reactants, prereaction complex, transition state structure and radical product have been optimized and vibrational frequencies have been calculated at the HF, MP2, B88, and B3LYP level using 6-31G* and 6-311G** basis sets. The energetics of the reaction is characterized within the MP2, DFT, G2, CBS, and BAC approaches. The evolution of the barrier height and reaction enthalpy has been systematically investigated with respect to the methodological approach employed. The best agreement with experimental results for the barrier…
Theoretical investigation of paramagnetic diazabutadiene gallium(III)-pnictogen complexes: insights into the interpretation and simulation of electro…
2005
The electronic structures and the spin density distributions of the paramagnetic gallium 1,4-diaza(1,3)butadiene (DAB) model systems [((t)Bu-DAB)Ga(I)[Pn(SiH3)2]]* and the related dipnictogen species [((t)Bu-DAB)Ga[Pn(SiH3)2]2]* (Pn = N, P, As) were studied using density functional theory. The calculations demonstrate that all systems share a qualitatively similar electronic structure and are primarily ligand-centered pi-radicals. The calculated electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) hyperfine coupling constants (HFCCs) for these model systems were optimized using iterative methods and were used to create accurate spectral simulations of the parent radicals [((t)Bu-DAB)Ga(I)[Pn(SiMe3)2]]* (P…
