The necessary skills in higher education: Validation of competences
2012
This paper tries to show which competences have an impact on the success of students in higher education and especially in the first academic year. This situation also requires finding a way to acquire the competences which are necessary in this new experience that is the first year. A student is considered to be a person who has the basic competences required. Our role is to show how this person in higher education can acquire the other new competences that help him/her attain the positive results that we name ''success''. Normally, the higher education is a new experience because he/she has never been in these situations before. To reach this goal we will first demonstrate a method to con…
French Students Enrolled in Distance Learning: Highly Motivated But Less Satisfied?
2016
International audience; The anticipated benefits of using emerging technology tools to facilitate learning have in recent years increased the expectations of the development of distance learning in higher education. Studies in various countries show, however, that the profile of distance learning students differs from traditional students' characteristics. There are generally older, more employed and more highly motivated but with a lower parental educational background even if these features appear to change with the development new technologies in training. This paper aims to identify some barriers to the development of distance and e-learning from the students' point of view. More precis…
Correlates of the non-use of contraception among female university students in Italy
2021
The present paper scrutinizes the correlates of the non-use of contraception among young women in Italy. To this end we consulted two releases of Selfy (Sexual and Emotional LiFe of Youths) survey, which offer information for a nationally sample of university students. The results reveal that the likelihood of non-using contraception is higher among women living in the South and among those with previous experience of unsafe sexual behaviours. The risk of unprotected sex is also higher within a group of students who are relatively older than the others and live in a stable cohabiting union.
Crossing Borders: An Online Interdisciplinary Course in Health Informatics for Students From Two Countries.
2017
A cross-countries and interprofessional novel approach for delivering an international interdisciplinary graduate health informatics course online is presented. Included in this discussion are the challenges, lessons learned, and pedagogical recommendations from the experiences of teaching the course. Four professors from three different fields and from three universities collaborated in offering an international health informatics course for an interdisciplinary group of 18 US and seven Norwegian students. Highly motivated students and professors, an online technology infrastructure that supported asynchronously communication and course delivery, the ability to adapt the curriculum to meet…
Tobacco use among medical students in Europe: results of a multicentre study using the Global Health Professions Student Survey
2012
Objective: To examine smoking prevalence, knowledge and attitudes, and tobacco cessation training among university students attending European medical schools using the Global Health Professional Students Survey approach. Methods: A cross-country, cross-sectional study was performed among 12 medical schools in four countries in Europe (Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain). The survey was performed during the second semester of the third year of study from March to May 2009. Results: In total, 2249 subjects entered the study (overall response rate 92%). The overall prevalence of smoking among medical students was 29.3% (95% confidence interval 28.1-34.7), with percentages ranging from 28% in Ge…
Predicting limiting 'free sugar' consumption using an integrated model of health behavior.
2020
Excess intake of ‘free sugars’ is a key predictor of chronic disease, obesity, and dental ill health. Given the importance of determining modifiable predictors of free sugar-related dietary behaviors, we applied the integrated behavior change model to predict free sugar limiting behaviors. The model includes constructs representing ‘reasoned’ or deliberative processes that lead to action (e.g., social cognition constructs, intentions), and constructs representing ‘non-conscious’ or implicit processes (e.g., implicit attitudes, behavioral automaticity) as predictors of behavior. Undergraduate students (N = 205) completed measures of autonomous and controlled motivation, the theory of planned…
Strategic Decisions in Task-Oriented Reading.
2015
AbstractAnswering questions from texts are assessment and instructional activities that are frequently used in schools. Nevertheless, little is known about the strategic processes that students take while performing these tasks. We explored the amount and frequency that students initially read of a text before they answered questions pertaining to the material. In a procedure similar to the one used in the PISA (Program for International Students Assessment), one-hundred-seventy students between 7thand 9thgrade read and answered several questions designed to assess task-oriented reading in three specific texts. We recorded on-line indexes that evaluated student behavior (e.g., the amount of…
Everyday Family Life and Multiple Roles of the Female Doctoral Students
2017
Combining work and family life, and the challenges and solutions connected to it is a topical and globally significant subject. In the article I examine how the under 40-year-old female doctoral students with a family succeed in combining their roles as a mother and a doctoral student in their own everyday lives. A number of large and simultaneous challenges condense in the everyday life of an under 40-year-old female doctoral student with a family. In the examination I concentrate on the everyday challenges of the female doctoral student, on the interface of the family and the doctoral studies and on the choices made in everyday life. The qualitative research material consisted of the them…
