Kyrgyzstan: Language Situation

2006

Kyrgyzstan is a Central Asian country that achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Its main linguistic groups are speakers of Kirghiz, Uzbek, and Russian; its official languages are Kirghiz and Russian. In the first years of independence, numerous non-Kirghiz speakers, particularly Russians, left the republic, whereas the Kirghiz-speaking population increased. Though Russian still dominates public life, the efforts to protect and promote Kirghiz have been successful. The Kirghiz generally maintain a high degree of mastery of their language. The part of the Ferghana Valley that belongs to Kyrgyzstan has a predominantly Uzbek population.

Experimental study of electron transport in mesoscopic carbon based nanostructures

In this thesis we have studied experimentally electronic transport in mesoscopic hybrid polypyrrole-gold devices and single multiwalled carbon nanotube devices. A novel fabrication technique for mesoscopic conducting hybrid polymer-gold films has been developed. The hybrid polymer-gold films have been fabricated by electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole on a gold nanoisland layer. Temperature dependence of conductance show that the dominant transport mechanism in the polypyrrole-gold films is variable range hopping in the temperature range from 20 K to 300 K. The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. Optically pumped Cs magnetometers enabling a high-sensitivity search for the neutron electric dipole moment

An array of 16 laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. Forward logistic regression for earth-flow landslide susceptibility assessment in the Platani river basin (southern Sicily, Italy)

Forward logistic regression has allowed us to derive an earth-flow susceptibility model for the Tumarrano river basin, which was defined by modeling the statistical relationships between an archive of 760 events and a set of 20 predictors. For each landslide in the inventory, a landslide identification point (LIP) was automatically produced as corresponding to the highest point along the boundary of the landslide polygons, and unstable conditions were assigned to cells at a distance up to 8 m.
