A dynamic business modelling approach to design and experiment new business venture strategies

2018

Abstract Business Modelling has evolved as a key activity to reflect new business venture strategy by framing the way a firm will operate and how it will function in achieving its goals (e.g., profitability, growth, innovation, social impact). However, scholars and practitioners have criticized the adoption of a too static perspective in the design and use of conventional Business Model representations. Such a static perspective prevents nascent entrepreneurs experimenting with their Business Models and, as a result, identifying the most effective strategies, especially in terms of business sustainability and profitability. In this paper, we argue that combining conventional Business Model …

Consistent shakedown theorems for materials with temperature dependent yield functions

2000

The (elastic) shakedown problem for structures subjected to loads and temperature variations is addressed in the hypothesis of elastic-plastic rate-independent associative material models with temperature-dependent yield functions. Assuming the yield functions convex in the stress/temperature space, a thermodynamically consistent small-deformation thermo-plasticity theory is provided, in which the set of state and evolutive variables includes the temperature and the plastic entropy rate. Within the latter theory the known static (Prager's) and kinematic (König's) shakedown theorems - which hold for yield functions convex in the stress space - are restated in an appropriate consistent format…

Using neural networks to obtain indirect information about the state variables in an alcoholic fermentation process

2020

This work provides a manual design space exploration regarding the structure, type, and inputs of a multilayer neural network (NN) to obtain indirect information about the state variables in the alcoholic fermentation process. The main benefit of our application is to help experts reduce the time needed for making the relevant measurements and to increase the lifecycles of sensors in bioreactors. The novelty of this research is the flexibility of the developed application, the use of a great number of variables, and the comparative presentation of the results obtained with different NNs (feedback vs. feed-forward) and different learning algorithms (Back-Propagation vs. Levenberg&ndash

H<inf>∞</inf> filter design for time-delay Markovian jump systems

2013

This paper investigates the H ∞ filtering problem for discrete time-delay Markovian jump systems with application to networked control systems. To design a full-order filter which ensures the stochastic stability and a prescribed H ∞ performance level for the filtering error system, the Scaled Small Gain (SSG) Theorem is developed for stochastic systems. By employing a two-term approximation to delayed state variables, the original system is transformed into an input-output form consisting of two subsystems. Based on the developed SSG Theorem and the proposed Lyapunov-Krasovskii Functional (LKF), the scaled small gains of the subsystems are analyzed to establish a new condition for the exis…

Applications of the vehicle routing problem with trailers and transshipments

2013

Abstract The vehicle routing problem with trailers and transshipments (VRPTT) is a recent and challenging extension of the well-known vehicle routing problem. The VRPTT constitutes an archetypal representative of the class of vehicle routing problems with multiple synchronization constraints (VRPMSs). In addition to the usual task covering constraints, VRPMSs require further synchronization between vehicles, concerning spatial, temporal, and load aspects. VRPMSs possess considerable practical relevance, but limited coverage in the scientific literature. The purpose of the present paper is to describe how several important types of VRPMSs, such as multi-echelon location-routing problems and …

Atypical transistor-based chaotic oscillators: Design, realization, and diversity

2017

In this paper, we show that novel autonomous chaotic oscillators based on one or two bipolar junction transistors and a limited number of passive components can be obtained via random search with suitable heuristics. Chaos is a pervasive occurrence in these circuits, particularly after manual adjustment of a variable resistor placed in series with the supply voltage source. Following this approach, 49 unique circuits generating chaotic signals when physically realized were designed, representing the largest collection of circuits of this kind to date. These circuits are atypical as they do not trivially map onto known topologies or variations thereof. They feature diverse spectra and predom…

Sub-threshold signal processing in arrays of non-identical nanostructures

2011

Weak input signals are routinely processed by molecular-scaled biological networks composed of non-identical units that operate correctly in a noisy environment. In order to show that artificial nanostructures can mimic this behavior, we explore theoretically noise-assisted signal processing in arrays of metallic nanoparticles functionalized with organic ligands that act as tunneling junctions connecting the nanoparticle to the external electrodes. The electronic transfer through the nanostructure is based on the Coulomb blockade and tunneling effects. Because of the fabrication uncertainties, these nanostructures are expected to show a high variability in their physical characteristics and…

CROSSMAPPER: estimating cross-mapping rates and optimizing experimental design in multi-species sequencing studies

2020

Motivation Numerous sequencing studies, including transcriptomics of host-pathogen systems, sequencing of hybrid genomes, xenografts, mixed species systems, metagenomics and meta-transcriptomics, involve samples containing genetic material from divergent organisms. A crucial step in these studies is identifying from which organism each sequencing read originated, and the experimental design should be directed to minimize biases caused by cross-mapping of reads to incorrect source genomes. Additionally, pooling of sufficiently different genetic material into a single sequencing library could significantly reduce experimental costs but requires careful planning and assessment of the impact of…

A Comparison of Formulae for Calculating Cost-Efficient Sample Sizes of Case-Control Studies with an Internal Validation Scheme

2000

When a case-control study is planned to include an internal validation study, the sample size of the study and the proportion of validated observations has to be calculated. There are a variety of alternative methods to accomplish this. In this article some possible procedures will be compared in order to clarify whether considerable differences in the suggested optimal designs occur, dependent on the used method.

Requirement analysis abstractions for AmI system design

2015

Current trends in the AI’s evolution are going towards enriching environments with intelligence in order to support humans in their everyday life. AmI systems are plunged in the real world and humans expect to interact with them in a way that is similar to the one they have with other humans. In this kind of systems, where eliciting requirements involves several documents and stakeholders (mainly users that will be the first consumers of the system), the requirement analysis phase can be affected by incomplete, ambiguous and imprecise information. Hence, the need to find a fruitful way for knowledge management and its representation at design time. In this paper we propose a set of abstract…
