Postfazione. Che cos'è un progetto?
2021
We should go back to the project and redesign it. Maybe even changing its form. No longer a technical drawing, a sketch on paper, a working scheme of an object that does not yet exist, but something different. Maybe a different kind of drawing, a diagram, or maybe a story. No storytelling though, please, at least if by storytelling we mean telling stories as is done in marketing to sell products. No, the project can be thought of as a story only if the story is also thought of as a project. Without a formal definition of storytelling we cannot think of formalizing the way to take into consideration the social dimension of objects. In the end it is Bruno Latour, perhaps in spite of himself, …
Tecnologie in cucina
2020
There is no better inorganic actor than Vorwerk's Thermomix to demonstrate how the kitchen is a fertile ground for investigating the relationship between humans and non-humans. We can think of this particular blender as an exemplary text, a cultural product that, if properly analyzed, allows us to reconstruct the mechanisms that dominate a much broader class of artifacts. What interests us is in fact that objects (in general, and therefore kitchen objects) have nothing objective and therefore that their nature as "tools", as we commonly call them, does not imply either a gregarious role or a presumed inertia that makes them dumb helpers able to perform more or less well a function that is g…
Zeta printing. Storytelling mon amour
2017
Storytelling, or "storytelling." This is the the watchword of contemporary communication, the key concept on which to work in order to to be successful, to fascinate crowds and become memorable memorable, and even to convince them to buy a product, whatever it is. a product, whatever it is; this is the discovery, the discovery, communicative innovation, the ace up the sleeve of today's advertiser. As simple as the ubiquitous minimalism, as effective as that "subliminal message that "subliminal message" of hidden persuaders, whose idea communicators of every kind caress as Number 1 does with his white cat (the archenemy of agent 007 of agent 007 who commands the Spectre, ed.). Storytelling i…
Apprendre à manger. Sémiotique des objets de table pour enfants
2021
The subject of children at the table is related to that of conviviality on two levels. Firstly, at the level of the acquisition of social rules concerning the ways of being at the table, the codes of the meal, the recognition of appropriate behaviour in different contexts (at home, outside, formal, informal, etc.), in short, the "have to". Secondly, at the level of the acquisition of a general know-how, represented by all the somatic behaviours necessary for the consumption of the meal: learning to chew solid food, to drink from a glass, to use cutlery, to handle plates, bowls, soup plates, and so on. In this essay, we will analyse table objects designed for children (glasses, cutlery, plat…
Players' progression through GraphoGame, an early literacy game: Influence of game design and context of play
2019
Researchers of serious games frequently investigate outcomes of play but overlook the underlying game-design components that drive those outcomes. In this paper, I aim to show how game design and context of play influence progression through GraphoGame, an early-literacy game. This is done by means of two intersecting studies. The first study shows how the game can be represented by a model that explicitly hypothesizes how the interaction between the player and the game drives progression. The second study explores user data generated by first graders (N = 137) who played the game over a period of 25 weeks as part of early literacy instruction. The juxtaposition of these two studies reveals…
Modular Service Design of Information Technology-Enabled Services
2022
The literature has proposed ways to modularize information-technology-enabled services (ITeS) with limited success. We argue that applying design principles (DPs) can address this gap and revitalize the service modularization literature. With a qualitative research study, we develop exemplar DPs and a set of prioritized DPs for ITeS. We contribute to the literature by demonstrating how complex service systems, specifically ITeS, can be modularly designed. Our DPs show how different ITeS design elements or service attribute combinations impact the outcome-driven design of service experience. Based on the findings, we present a modular service design framework and a service design method tha…
A Multi-Projector Calibration Method for Virtual Reality Simulators with Analytically Defined Screens
2017
The geometric calibration of projectors is a demanding task, particularly for the industry of virtual reality simulators. Different methods have been developed during the last decades to retrieve the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of projectors, most of them being based on planar homographies and some requiring an extended calibration process. The aim of our research work is to design a fast and user-friendly method to provide multi-projector calibration on analytically defined screens, where a sample is shown for a virtual reality Formula 1 simulator that has a cylindrical screen. The proposed method results from the combination of surveying, photogrammetry and image processing approac…
Computationally Efficient Innovative Techniques for the Design-Oriented Simulation of Free-Running and Driven Microwave Oscillators
2014
Analysis techniques for injection-locked oscillators/amplifiers (ILO) can be broadly divided into two classes. To the first class belong methods with a strong and rigorous theoretical basis, that can be applied to rather general circuits/systems but which are very cumbersome and/or time-consuming to apply. To the second class belong methods which are very simple and fast to apply, but either lack of validity/accuracy or are applicable only to very simple or particular cases. In this thesis, a novel method is proposed which aims at combining the rigorousness and broad applicability characterizing the first class of analysis techniques above cited with the simplicity and computational efficie…
Space-by-Time Modular Decomposition Effectively Describes Whole-Body Muscle Activity During Upright Reaching in Various Directions
2017
The modular control hypothesis suggests that motor commands are built from precoded modules whose specific combined recruitment can allow the performance of virtually any motor task. Despite considerable experimental support, this hypothesis remains tentative as classical findings of reduced dimensionality in muscle activity may also result from other constraints (biomechanical couplings, data averaging or low dimensionality of motor tasks). Here we assessed the effectiveness of modularity in describing muscle activity in a comprehensive experiment comprising 72 distinct point-to-point whole-body movements during which the activity of 30 muscles was recorded. To identify invariant modules o…
Developments in the biomechanics and equipment of Olympic cross-country skiers
2018
Source at: http://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2018.00976 Here, our aim was to describe the major changes in cross-country (XC) skiing in recent decades, as well as potential future developments. XC skiing has been an Olympic event since the very first Winter Games in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Over the past decades, considerable developments in skiing techniques and improvements in equipment and track preparation have increased skiing speed. In contrast to the numerous investigations on the physiological determinants of successful performance, key biomechanical factors have been less explored. Today’s XC skier must master a wide range of speeds, terrains, and race distances and formats (e.g., dis…
