Design methodology for submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR): A case study

2015

[EN] The main objective of this study is to propose guidelines for designing submerged anaerobic MBR (AnMBR) technology for municipal wastewater treatment. The design methodology was devised on the basis of simulation and experimental results from an AnMBR plant featuring industrial-scale hollow-fibre membranes. The proposed methodology aims to minimise both capital expenditure and operating expenses, and the key parameters considered were: hydraulic retention time, solids retention time, mixed liquor suspended solids concentration in the membrane tank, 20 C-standardised critical flux, specificgas demand per square metre of membrane area, and flow of sludge being recycled from the membrane …

Synthesis, Characterization, Thermal and Antimicrobial studies of N-substituted Sulfanilamide derivatives

2014

Abstract Four sulfanilamide derivatives N -[4-(phenylsulfamoyl)phenyl]acetamide (1), 4-amino- N -phenylbenzenesulfonamide (2), N -[4-(phenylsulfamoyl)phenyl]benzamide (3) and N -{4-[(3-chlorophenyl)sulfamoyl]phenylbenzamide (4) were synthesized and characterized by Infra-Red (IR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and UV–visible (UV–Vis) spectra. Also Liquid Chromatographic (LCMS) and High Resolution Mass Spectrometric (HRMS) methods were used. Crystal structures of 1–4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and their conformational and hydrogen bond (HB) network properties were examined with survey of the literature data. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the same orthorho…

Oro-gustatory perception of dietary lipids and calcium signaling in taste bud cells are altered in nutritionally obesity-prone Psammomys obesus.

2013

Since the increasing prevalence of obesity is one of the major health problems of the modern era, understanding the mechanisms of oro-gustatory detection of dietary fat is critical for the prevention and treatment of obesity. We have conducted the present study on Psammomys obesus, the rodent desert gerbil which is a unique polygenic natural animal model of obesity. Our results show that obese animals exhibit a strong preference for lipid solutions in a two-bottle test. Interestingly, the expression of CD36, a lipido-receptor, in taste buds cells (TBC), isolated from circumvallate papillae, was decreased at mRNA level, but remained unaltered at protein level, in obese animals. We further st…

A low power interface circuit design for a CMOS based smart optical sensor

2012

In this paper, a CMOS interface circuit as part of an optical sensor-based microsystem for pH monitoring applications is presented. The proposed circuit is capable of processing a voltage signal produced by the light transducer and generating 8-bit digital outputs representing the color information (i.e. wavelength). A resolution of 8 different colors has been achieved as a proof of concept and can easily be extended to a higher number of colors without a major modification in the architecture. The proposed interface circuit is a mixed-signal solution that consists of analog as well as digital building blocks along with a light transducer. It can be used as a portable and non-intrusive opti…

CORRELATION BETWEEN THE CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF CNT AND MACROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF RELATED NANOCOMPOSITES: A STATISTICAL APPROACH

2014

In the frame of this work, two different samples of CNTs, namely CNT 1 and CNT 2, were synthesized [1] with different degree of purity and aspect ratio and used as fillers either without any treatment or after a plasma-oxidation, to prepare polycarbonate (PC)-based nanocomposites by melt mixing. The influence of plasma treatment, filler content and type of CNTs on the mechanical, dynamic-mechanical, and electrical properties of the materials was assessed by a two level full factorial design. The morphological analysis carried out by SEM and TEM evidenced the formation of a nanohybrid structure when oxidized CNTs were used as filler. Generally speaking, CNT 2 showed the best dispersion and t…

A multifuctional nanoplatform for drug targeted delivery based on radiation-engineered nanogels

2020

Abstract Under a rational design, combining biologically active molecules, ligands to specific cell receptors and fluorescent, radioactive or paramagnetic labels into a single nano-object can bridge the unique properties of the individual components and improve conventional sensing, imaging and therapeutic efficacies. The validation of these functional nano-objects requires careful testing both in terms of physico-chemical properties and biological behaviour in vitro and in vivo, prior to translation into the clinic. Ionising radiation of aqueous polymer solutions is a viable strategy to produce multifunctional nanogels from aqueous solutions of hydrophilic polymers. By proper selection of …

An Information Systems Design Product Theory for Software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems

2009

There is relatively little research on software Project Estimation and Measurement Systems (PEMS). Commercial PEMS vary in functionality and effective- ness. Their intended users thus do not know what to ex- pect from PEMS and how to evaluate them. This paper creates an information system design product theory for the class of PEMS that prescribes the meta-requirements, the meta-design, and applicable theories for all products within the class. Meta-requirements and the meta-design are derived from the project estimation and measurement literature, experiences obtained during more than ten years of empirical work in Finnish Software Measurement Association, and a commercially available PEMS.

3D segmentation of abdominal aorta from CT-scan and MR images

2012

International audience; We designed a generic method for segmenting the aneurismal sac of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) both from multi-slice MR and CT-scan examinations. It is a semi-automatic method requiring little human intervention and based on graph cut theory to segment the lumen interface and the aortic wall of AAAs. Our segmentation method works independently on MRI and CT-scan volumes and has been tested on a 44 patient dataset and 10 synthetic images. Segmentation and maximum diameter estimation were compared to manual tracing from 4 experts. An inter-observer study was performed in order to measure the variability range of a human observer. Based on three metrics (the maxim…

Concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers

2013

In this paper a study about concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers is presented. Lattice cantilevers are partial structures composed of deck, arch, piers and provisional steel diagonals, organized as reticular cantilever girders, in order to build arch bridges without the use of centrings, supports or temporary towers. Characteristics of this construction methodology with its variants are explained together with their implications in the erection sequence. Partial elastic scheme method is implemented in order to find initial forces of temporary cables and a forward analysis is carried out to follow the actual sequence of construction, by extending a procedure already applied to …

A biphasic calcium phosphate coating for potential drug delivery affects early osseointegration of titanium implants.

2016

Background Calcium phosphate (CaP) surface coatings may accelerate osseointegration and serve as a drug delivery system for mineral-binding biomolecules. In a pilot study, the impact of a commercially available, thin CaP coating on early osseous bone remodeling was compared with a modern, subtractive-treated rough surface (SLA-like) in an animal trial. Methods In 16 rabbits, 32 endosseous implants (CaP; n = 16, SLA-like; n = 16) were bilaterally inserted in the proximal tibia after randomization. After 2 and 4 weeks, bone-implant contact (BIC;%) in the cortical (cBIC) and the trabecular bone (sBIC) as well as volume of bone within the screw thread with the highest amount of new-formed bone …
