Lignin is considered to be responsible for a selective sorption of phenolic compounds on wood. In order to investigate the mechanisms involved, two similar guaiacol compounds--only differing by the nature of the para side chain--were adsorbed on oak wood extracted lignin. Vapor sorption-desorption isotherms indicated that about 3.5 wt % of 4-vinylguaiacol is adsorbed near saturation whereas it is only 0.8% for 4-ethylguaiacol. For both compounds, the isotherms displayed a hysteresis though significantly greater for 4-vinylguaiacol. The capacity of activated carbon as a buffer pretreatment combined with biotrickling filtration for volatile organic compound (VOC) removal has been studied. The adsorption capacity of commercial activated carbons for m-xylene, acetone and n-butyl acetate (typical paint solvents) was evaluated, including the response to the interchanging of adsorbed compounds and to mixtures over fluctuating inlet conditions. The adsorption of m-xylene and n-butyl acetate was mainly irreversible and more than three times higher than for acetone. We have investigated the potential of structural elucidation of O-linked glycopeptides by post-source decay matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (PSD-MALDI-MS). In order to establish detailed fragmentation patterns and to dissect fragment ions with and without carbohydrate content, the same O-linked MUC1-derived glycopeptides with acetylated and non-acetylated sugars were analysed and compared. In this work, we were interested in the study of the kinetic behavior of the reaction of drying soil representing the Marrakesh region (south of Morocco) in the presence of an superabsorbent polymer. The presence of a polymer in the soil diminished the kinetic drying of the soil, which will have as an application a reduction in water loss in the process of irrigation. The presence of a polymer in the soil enables a complete modification of the kinetic regimes controlling the soil-drying kinetic. To study the potentialities of a polyelectrolyte superabsorbent for the storage of water, we have studied a ground representative of the area of Haouz (area of Marrakesh, South of Morocco) in the presence of polymer. We sought the optimal proportions allowing the best retention of water by the mixture made up of the polymer and the ground and to prolong the storage period of water in the ground. We have also studied the effect of certain ions and the pH on the capacity for absorption of polymer. In order to quantify the error of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry in the determination of broad molecular weight distributions, different mixtures by weight of two poly(methyl methacrylate) standards were prepared. Previously we reported on the presence of a high (2'-5')oligoadenylate synthetase activity in the marine sponge Geodia cydonium [Kuusksalu, A., Pihlak, A., Muller, W. E. G. & Kelve, M. (1995) Eur. J. Biochem. 232, 351-357]. The presence of (2'-5')oligoadenylates [(2'-5')A] in crude sponge extract was shown by radioimmunoassay and by their HPLC comigration with authentic (2'-5')A oligomers. The adsorption and desorption of functionalized polystyrene-block-polybutadiene diblock copolymers from dilute solutions in toluene onto silicon wafers are investigated by means of null ellipsometry. The short polybutadiene block is functionalized by a reaction with 4-(3,5-dioxo-1,2,4-triazolidin-4-yl)benzoic acid. On the average there are six functional groups per chain. The polystyrene block does not adsorb on the surface. The adsorption depends on the length of the polystyrene block, and chains with short polystyrene blocks yield higher surface coverage than larger ones.
