Experience management as an innovative approach in emerging Mediterranean destinations

2019

Abstract Recent experience-centric management theory stresses the quality of the interaction between the consumer and the company as the key contributor to the creation of value. The theory follows that understanding tourists' quality of service experience (QSE) is crucial if tourism managers are to effectively support the value cocreation experience. This study examines the impact of QSE on destination image, as well as the impact of these variables on positive word-of-mouth and revisit intentions. The hypotheses are tested with data from a convenience sample of 1362 tourists who were surveyed in seven emerging Mediterranean destinations. Notably, the variable QSE is considered to be a for…

Predictors of tourist engagement: Travel motives and tourism destination profiles

2020

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of travel motives and regional tourism destinations on positive/negative engagement with a destination management organisation (DMO). According to previous literature, travel motives were classified as push and pull motives, and regional tourism destinations were classified by tourist demand behaviour. To achieve the objective, the totality of posts about regional tourism destinations published on the Brand Spain's Official Facebook Fanpage during a year were analysed (418), along with audience reactions (127,750), comments (3219) and shares to such posts. A content analysis was performed, with a regression analysis (optimal sca…

An analysis of the stability of rural tourism as a desired condition for sustainable tourism

2019

Abstract Tourism is a key sector in the sustainable development of rural environments. Its ability to create stable employment and an acceptable level of profits is conditioned by the stability of tourist activity throughout the year. This paper compares the level of seasonality of a group of rural destinations to that of coastal and urban destinations. By doing so, we intend to determine whether seasonality-related problems exist in the rural environment or not. The second aim is related to the first one: the proposal of a new, more comprehensive and objective methodology that can measure the intensity of seasonality based on a DP2 synthetic indicator. The DP2 indicator groups information …

Associations between travel and tourism competitiveness and culture

2020

Abstract In recent years, countries have been competing with each other to attract tourists due to of the unprecedented growth in new tourism destinations. Consequently, these countries have been taking several initiatives to improve the competitiveness of their destinations in comparison to those of other countries. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for destinations to become the most popular and preferred choice among tourists. Previous literature has highlighted the need for examining the association between the culture of a particular destination and their competitiveness with respect to tourism. Little is known, however, about these associations at the present time. This s…

The Image of Spain as Tourist Destination Built Through Fictional Cinema

2008

Fictional cinema is one of the cultural agents that shapes the international image of each country. It colonizes spectators’ imagery, and it can influence their choice of tourist destinations. Spanish cinema’s international diffusion has allowed the exhibition of movies that spread and renew the image of Spain in different ways. In this respect, we propose a three-fold typology of films focusing our attention on their content and the ways in which they build the image of Spain: Icon Films, Pastiche Films, and Tourist Poster Films. These films may stimulate the increase of a cultural tourism very different from the traditional one that inspired many to come to Spain mainly looking for sunny …

A branch-and-cut algorithm for the Orienteering Arc Routing Problem

2016

[EN] In arc routing problems, customers are located on arcs, and routes of minimum cost have to be identified. In the Orienteering Arc Routing Problem (OARP),in addition to a set of regular customers that have to be serviced, a set of potential customers is available. From this latter set, customers have to be chosen on the basis of an associated profit. The objective is to find a route servicing the customers which maximize the total profit collected while satisfying a given time limit on the route. In this paper, we describe large families of facet-inducing inequalities for the OARP and present a branch-and-cut algorithm for its solution. The exact algorithm embeds a procedure which builds…

A multi-parametric evolution strategies algorithm for vehicle routing problems

2007

Vehicle routing problems are at the heart of most decision support systems for real-life distribution problems. In vehicle routing problem a set of routes must be determined at lowest total cost for a number of resources (i.e. fleet of vehicles) located at one or several points (e.g. depots, warehouses) in order to efficiently service a number of demand or supply points. In this paper an efficient evolution strategies algorithm is developed for both capacitated vehicle routing problem and for vehicle routing problem with time window constraints. The algorithm is based on a new multi-parametric mutation procedure that is applied within the 1 + 1 evolution strategies algorithm. Computational …

Two-phase branch-and-cut for the mixed capacitated general routing problem

2015

The Mixed Capacitated General Routing Problem (MCGRP) is defined over a mixed graph, for which some vertices must be visited and some links must be traversed at least once. The problem consists of determining a set of least-cost vehicle routes that satisfy this requirement and respect the vehicle capacity. Few papers have been devoted to the MCGRP, in spite of interesting real-world applications, prevalent in school bus routing, mail delivery, and waste collection. This paper presents a new mathematical model for the MCGRP based on two-index variables. The approach proposed for the solution is a two-phase branch-and-cut algorithm, which uses an aggregate formulation to develop an effective …

New Results on the Mixed General Routing Problem

2005

[EN] In this paper, we deal with the polyhedral description and the resolution of the Mixed General Routing Problem. This problem, in which the service activity occurs both at some of the nodes and at some of the arcs and edges of a mixed graph, contains a large number of important arc and node routing problems as special cases. Here, a large family of facet-defining inequalities, the Honeycomb inequalities, is described. Furthermore, a cutting-plane algorithm for this problem that incorporates new separation procedures for the K-C, Regular Path-Bridge, and Honeycomb inequalities is presented. Branch and bound is invoked when the final solution of the cutting-plane procedure is fractional. …
