Detection of power line insulators on digital images with the use of laser spots
2019
The massive growth of technologies used to register and process digital images allow for their application in evaluating the technical condition of power lines. However, it is not possible without a set of dedicated methods for obtaining diagnostic information based on registered video data. The method described here details the detection of power line insulators in digital images featuring diversified backgrounds using laser spots. The algorithm of detecting an insulator in analysed images is based on testing the digital signal of pixel intensity profiles read between subsequent pairs of laser points in the image. The method is comprised of the following stages: import the image with laser…
Finding essential features for tracking starfish in a video sequence
2004
The paper introduces a software system for detecting and tracking starfish in an underwater video sequence. The target of such a system is to help biologists in giving an estimate of the number of starfish present in a particular area of the sea-bottom. The nature of the input images is characterised by a low signal/noise ratio and by the presence of noisy background represented by pebbles; this makes the detection a non-trivial task. The procedure we use is a chain of several steps that starts from the extraction of the area of interest and ends with a classifier and a tracker providing the necessary information for counting the starfish present in the scene. © 2003 IEEE.
Methodologies for the Exploitation of Existing Energy Corridors. GIS Analysis and DTR Applications
2018
The exploitation of power lines currently in operation has now become a common practice among electric system operators. The construction of new power lines requires taking economic, political and social problems into consideration. This paper considers two methodologies adopted by the Italian Transmission System Operator (TSO), Terna S.p.A.: Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) and Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging-Geographic Information System (L-GIS). DTR systems dynamically calculate the real transport capacity of a power line. The L-GIS system allows, after the geo-referencing of the power line, the management of any interference between the line and the nearby obstacles, permitting the opti…
Control Flow Error Checking with ISIS
2005
The Interleaved Signature Instruction Stream (ISIS) is a signature embedding technique that allows signatures to co-exist with the main processor instruction stream with a minimal impact on processor performance, without sacrificing error detection coverage or latency. While ISIS incorporate some novel error detection mechanisms to assess the integrity of the program executed by the main processor, the limited number of bits available in the signature control word question if the detection mechanisms are effective detecting errors in the program execution flow. Increasing the signature size would negatively impact the memory requirements, so this option has been rejected. The effectiveness …
Monotonicity and enclosure methods for the p-Laplace equation
2018
We show that the convex hull of a monotone perturbation of a homogeneous background conductivity in the $p$-conductivity equation is determined by knowledge of the nonlinear Dirichlet-Neumann operator. We give two independent proofs, one of which is based on the monotonicity method and the other on the enclosure method. Our results are constructive and require no jump or smoothness properties on the conductivity perturbation or its support.
Example of a technique for evaluation of interferences caused by complicated sample matrix elements in ICP-AES determination
2001
An example of a useful and rapid procedure for the evaluation of interferences caused by complicated sample matrices in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) is described. Using simple acid-base standards, all the elements investigated were determined separately in complicated matrices with satisfactory results. Multiple linear regression was used to calculate the linear correction coefficients for each matrix element analyzed. Good analytical results improved still further when this correction method was used.
Unsupervised change detection with kernels
2012
In this paper an unsupervised approach to change detection relying on kernels is introduced. Kernel based clustering is used to partition a selected subset of pixels representing both changed and unchanged areas. Once the optimal clustering is obtained the estimated representatives (centroids) of each group are used to assign the class membership to all others pixels composing the multitemporal scenes. Different approaches of considering the multitemporal information are considered with accent on the computation of the difference image directly in the feature spaces. For this purpose a difference kernel approach is successfully adopted. Finally an effective way to cope with the estimation o…
Interannual vineyard crop variability in the Castilla–La Mancha region during the period 1991–1996 with Landsat Thematic Mapper images
2004
The vineyard crop is considered an indicator of vegetation cover processes in the Castilla–La Mancha region, as the crop has undergone far-reaching changes in the last ten years: abandonment, removal of vineyards and replacement with other crops such as cereal. The so-called ‘Change detection’ is a process that allows identification of differences in the state of the vineyard by observing it at different times. Essentially, it involves the ability to quantify temporal effects using multi-temporal datasets. The aim of this study is to analyse the vineyard variability during the period 1991–1996 using different Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images belonging to an identified period that highl…
Analysis of Early Host Responses for Asymptomatic Disease Detection and Management of Specialty Crops
2010
The rapid and unabated spread of vector-borne diseases within US specialty crops threatens our agriculture, our economy, and the livelihood of growers and farm workers. Early detection of vector-borne pathogens is an essential step for the accurate surveillance and management of vector-borne diseases of specialty crops. Currently, we lack the tools that would detect the infectious agent at early (primary) stages of infection with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. In this paper, we outline a strategy for developing an integrated suite of platform technologies to enable rapid, early disease detection and diagnosis of huanglongbing (HLB), the most destructive citrus disease. The re…
Pap Testing in a High-Income Country with Suboptimal Compliance Levels: A Survey on Acceptance Factors among Sicilian Women
2018
Cervical cancer screening is uncommon, especially in low-income countries and among lower socioeconomic status people in high-income countries. The aims of this study were to examine the adherence of Sicilian women to Pap testing and to identify the determinants of this in a population with a secondary prevention attitude lower than high-income countries and the national average. A cross-sectional study called &ldquo
