The ground-state properties of the tetranuclear Ni2+ cluster [Ni4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]10- were investigated by combining magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements with a detailed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on a fully deuterated sample of K6Na4[Ni4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]·24H2O. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility indicates a ferromagnetic coupling of the four constituent Ni2+ ions (s = 1), and a low-temperature magnetization study provides the magnitude of the S = 4 ground-multiplet splitting due to the single-ion anisotropy of the Ni2+ ions. Deuterium isotope effect on the induction period of the cerium catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction

Abstract In this work we present results about the deuterium isotopic effect on the global kinetics of a cerium catalyzed Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction. A nonlinear dependence of the induction period upon the percentage of deuterated reactants was found in batch conditions. In order to understand this result, we investigated two reaction pathways responsible for the length of the induction period, namely: (a) the reaction between the enolic form of the malonic acid with molecular bromine and (b) the oxidation of malonic acid by the Ce(IV) ion. Mass spectra of chlorinated aromatics formed in pulp bleaching: I—chlorinated catechols

The fragmentation of chlorinated guaiacols (2-methoxyphenols) on electron impact has been studied. The most common fragmentation processes are interpreted and in some cases the small differences between spectra of positional isomers are explained. In addition to the well-known alkyl-oxygen fission (loss of methyl radical), metastable ion studies and deuterium labelling have indicated several new fragmentation pathways. The most characteristic are the formation of [MCH3HCl]+ and [MCH3Cl]+· ions. In general, however, the spectra of positional isomers are shown to be very similar.

Electron impact mass spectra of chlorinated methyl propanoates

The mass spectral fragmentations of all eleven chlorinated methyl propanoates have been studied. Deuterium labelling and metastable ion analysis were used to elucidate the fragmentation mechanism. The molecular ion peaks of all compounds are small, except methyl 3,3-dichloropanoate (38%). In most cases α-cleavage gives the base peak [COOCH3]+, and the loss of a chlorine atom from the molecular ion is characteristic of the 3-chloro, 3,3-dichloro and 3,3,3-trichloro compounds. Metastable ions showed the losses of small neutral molecules such as CH3OH, CH2CO, CO2 and CO from the [MCl]+ ion. α-Cleavage and the loss of Cl˙ gives an intense [MCOOCH3Cl]+˙ peak, which is the base peak in the spectr…

Measurements of Tumor Blood Flow Using Intraperitoneal Deuterium and 2H-NMR Spectroscopy

Tumors usually have a sparse, disorganized, and inefficient vascular network that leaves a large fraction of the tumor cells in an oxygen deprived and hostile metabolic microenvironment. Hence tumor blood flow, or more correctly nutritive perfusion, has important interactions with treatment efficacy. For example, hypoxic tumor cells, which occur in tumors with low blood flow, are less susceptible to radiation and are probably responsible for most radiation treatment failures (Adams, 1981). Rotational diffusion of colloid spheres in concentrated suspensions studied by deuteron NMR

We present a study of the application of deuteron-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to the investigation of the rotational diffusion of spherical colloidal particles. We performed NMR pulse experiments on colloidal suspensions of polystyrene latex spheres in water-glycerol mixtures in a wide range of particle volume fractions \ensuremath{\varphi} from the dilute suspension up to \ensuremath{\varphi}=0.504. We have analyzed the stimulated echo NMR signal in the time domain. Thermotropic nematic polyesters, specifically deuterated at different positions of the polymer chain, were macroscopically aligned by strong magnetic fields and solid state extrusion. Analysis of the observed 2H NMR spectra was achieved, employing a dynamic NMR model, based on the stochastic Liouville equation. The model considers various double and multiple pulse sequences, recently employed in FT-NMR spectroscopy.

Unitarity constraint for threshold coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron

The contribution of the two-step process {gamma}d{r_arrow}pn{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}d to the imaginary part of the amplitude for coherent pion production on the deuteron is calculated at threshold exploiting unitarity constraints. The result shows that this absorptive process is not negligible and has to be considered in an extraction of the elementary neutron production amplitude from the {gamma}d{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}d cross section at threshold. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

1H-NMR study of a cobalt-substituted blue copper protein: Pseudomonas aeruginosa Co(II)-azurin.

Substitution of copper by cobalt in blue copper proteins gives a paramagnetic metalloderivative suitable for paramagnetic NMR studies. A thorough analysis of the 1H-NMR spectrum of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Co(II)-azurin is presented here. All the observable contact-shifted signals as well as many other paramagnetic signals from protons placed up to about 1.0 nm around the metal center, including some residues belonging to functionally important parts of the protein like the hydrophobic patch and the His35 region, have been assigned.
