Mechanisms of cell death in canine parvovirus-infected cells provide intuitive insights to developing nanotools for medicine

2010

Jonna Nykky, Jenni E Tuusa, Sanna Kirjavainen, Matti Vuento, Leona GilbertNanoscience Center and Department of Biological and Environmental Science, University of Jyväskylä, FinlandAbstract: Viruses have great potential as nanotools in medicine for gene transfer, targeted gene delivery, and oncolytic cancer virotherapy. Here we have studied cell death mechanisms of canine parvovirus (CPV) to increase the knowledge on the CPV life cycle in order to facilitate the development of better parvovirus vectors. Morphological studies of CPV-infected Norden laboratory feline kidney (NLFK) cells and canine fibroma cells (A72) displayed characteristic apoptotic events. Apoptosis was f…

Stick around: Cell–Cell Adhesion Molecules during Neocortical Development

2021

The neocortex is an exquisitely organized structure achieved through complex cellular processes from the generation of neural cells to their integration into cortical circuits after complex migration processes. During this long journey, neural cells need to establish and release adhesive interactions through cell surface receptors known as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Several types of CAMs have been described regulating different aspects of neurodevelopment. Whereas some of them mediate interactions with the extracellular matrix, others allow contact with additional cells. In this review, we will focus on the role of two important families of cell–cell adhesion molecules (C-CAMs), classi…

Chile pod rządami Augusto Pinocheta. Latynoamerykańskie doświadczenia z neoliberalnym modelem rozwoju

2017

W artykule zaprezentowano, z wykorzystaniem perspektywy historycznej, próby wdrażania neoliberalnego modelu rozwoju w Chile.

Structural analysis of network models in tetrapod skulls : evolutionary trends and structural constraints in morphological complexity, integration an…

2013

Background Ever since classic anatomists like George Cuvier, Geoffroy St. Hilaire, or Richard Owen laid down the fundamental principles of comparative anatomy in the 19th century, connections among anatomical parts have been essential for the recognition of biological homologies. However, few studies have addressed the possibility of implementing an adequate methodological tool to use connections among parts to unveil problems in morphology; although Woodger, Rashevsky, Riedl, and, more recently, Rasskin-Gutman pointed in this direction. In the last decades Network Theory has been developed as a novel conceptual and methodological framework to deal with the relational properties that emerge…

Developing National Career and Workforce Development Systems and Policies with Structured International Co-operation : Structures, Processes and Acti…

2017

This chapter describes the work undertaken by European Lifelong Guidance Policy Network, ELGPN during 2007-15, including the progress of lifelong guidance policy adaptation and implementation processes of the member countries at national, regional and local levels. In an evaluation of ELGPN’s work, members report that participation in the Network enriched their awareness of possible responses to common challenges and given them fresh perspectives and new insights into their national provision. A key strength of the Network was the strong ownership of its activities expressed by the national delegations. ELGPN member countries stress the importance of continuing structured European co-operat…

Cranio-Facial Characteristics in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

2019

Background: Cranio-facial anomalies frequently occur in neurodevelopmental disorders because both face and brain are derived from neuroectoderm. The identification of differences in the facial phenotype of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) may reflect alterations in embryologic brain development in children with ASD. Methods: we evaluated 33 caucasian children with ASD using a 2D computerized photogrammetry. Anthropometric euclidean measurements and landmarks located on the soft tissue of the face and head, were based on five cranio-facial indexes. Relationships between anthropometric z-scores and participant characteristics (i.e., age, Global IQ, severity of autistic symptoms m…

Reproducibility of Brain Responses: High for Speech Perception, Low for Reading Difficulties

2019

Neuroscience findings have recently received critique on the lack of replications. To examine the reproducibility of brain indices of speech sound discrimination and their role in dyslexia, a specific reading difficulty, brain event-related potentials using EEG were measured using the same cross-linguistic passive oddball paradigm in about 200 dyslexics and 200 typically reading 8–12-year-old children from four countries with different native languages. Brain responses indexing speech and non-speech sound discrimination were extremely reproducible, supporting the validity and reliability of cognitive neuroscience methods. Significant differences between typical and dyslexic readers were fou…
