School burnout and engagement profiles among digital natives in Finland: a person-oriented approach
2016
AbstractApplying a person-oriented approach, this study set out to examine what profiles of school engagement and school burnout (i.e., exhaustion, cynicism, inadequacy) can be identified among elementary school children at age 12, a generation also often referred to as the generation of digital natives. We compared the group memberships in their use of socio-digital technologies and related functioning as we expected to find a gap between some digital natives and current educational practices which do not include socio-digital technology in feelings of cynicism towards school. Latent profile analysis identified five groups: Engaged (50%) students, who formed the majority; Stressed (4%) stu…
Adolescents’ Stress and Depressive symptoms and Their Associations with Psychological Flexibility before Educational Transition
2023
Introduction: Relatively little is known about individual differences in adolescent psychological flexibility and its associations with symptoms of stress and depression. This study examined different profiles of adolescent stress and depressive symptoms and their associations with developing psychological flexibility before the critical educational transition. Methods: The data were derived from a general sample of 740 Finnish ninth-grade adolescents (Mage = 15.7 years, 57% female) who were assessed twice during the final grade of their basic education. The data were analyzed using growth mixture modeling. Results: Four profiles of stress and depressive symptoms were identified during a sc…
Individual Differences Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Role of Age, Gender, Personality, and Positive Psychology
2021
Research on individual differences in facing the COVID-19 pandemic seems to be crucial in order to design diverse and highly effective intervention strategies. This study uses a sample of 302 North American participants who were recruited through the crowdsourcing platform ProA; different profiles were established, profiling variables of interest in facing the COVID-19 outbreak. Socio-demographic and psychological (personality traits, gratitude, life purpose, and religiosity) variables were explored. These results are of interest if we want to deepen the study of individual differences at both a theoretical and applied level.
Cohesion of planning and programming the development of regions in the conditions of a territorially-oriented policy
2015
The aim of the article is to identify the degree of cohesion of goals and needs of functional areas development with targets defined in the development of communes and a region. The functional areas: urban and sub-regional of Opole Province make the case study here. The study was conducted on the basis of documents which deal with planning and programming of the development of regional, local, as well as functional areas. As a result of the study, it was established that: the degree of adjustment of the targets defined in the development of functional areas is higher with reference to goals of the regional rather than local development. This results from greater possibilities of financing t…
Exploring the critical incident technique to encourage reflection during project-based learning
2017
Previous research has reported on the challenge of promoting students' generic reflection during authentic project-based courses. This work explores a teaching intervention based on Flanagan's Critical Incident Technique (CIT) during a project-based software development course. The intervention aims at increasing students' awareness of their own learning and at encouraging reflective practice throughout the project. Students were asked to report on 'incidents' when they experienced learning during the course, and to reflect on the task itself at the end of the course. The present study focuses on how students approached the incident reporting task and how they perceived it. The results indi…
Key Challenges of Virtual Software Development Teams
2010
Montonen, Jarno Johannes Key Challenges of Virtual Software Development Teams / Jarno Montonen Jyväskylä: Jyväskylä University, 2010. 41 p. Bachelor’s Thesis Many alleged benefits of virtual teams have motivated software companies to utilize virtual work in their projects. Building efficient virtual teams has, however, proven out to be a difficult task, and companies have found out that the alleged benefits may not always come true. To ease the efficient utilization of virtual teams in the future software development projects, this study researches virtual software development literature for key challenges that the teams face, as well as to find possible solutions to these challenges. The s…
Effects of selected pro-environmental project in the regional development of Poland
2019
Zgodnie z założeniami Strategii Europa 2020 wobec państw członkowskich wyznaczono cele w ramach prowadzonej polityki rozwoju. Ex-post evaluation of Territorial Integrated Projects in Italy: an empirical analysis at firm level
2013
This paper focuses on the evaluation of an incentive program for firms implemented in southern Italy during the last decade. In the framework of the policy instruments aimed to reduce territorial disparities, and to support local development, territorial integrated projects (TIP) constituted a new operational mode to implement the Regional Operational Programmes. A TIP is defined as a ?set of inter-sectorial actions, closely consistent and linked among them, which converge towards the common objective of territorial development and justify a unitary implementation approach'. The resources allocated for each TIP may be aimed at three types of interventions such as infrastructures, public act…
Building Situational Awareness of GDPR
2023
Because previous academic research does not comment sufficiently on how the relevant content of the European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR has been properly communicated to the organisations, or how the situational awareness (SA) of GDPR has been built in the organisations, this qualitative empirical research was regarded as a valuable approach for gathering authentic research material on the practical bases of this phenomena. The aim of this empirical case study (CS) is to develop a picture of what processes organisations use to build SA of the GDPR requirements. To guide the CS, we asked how the SA for decision-making was constructed and how it was perceived in organ…
The role of linguistic and cognitive factors in emotion recognition difficulties in children with ASD, ADHD or DLD
2020
Abstract Background: Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulty recognizing and understanding emotions. However, the reasons for these difficulties are currently not well understood. Aims: To compare the emotion recognition skills of children with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as those children’s skills with the skills of their typically developing (TD) age peers. Also, to identify the role of underlying factors in predicting emotion recognition skills. Methods & Procedures: The 6–10‐year‐old children (n = 50) who participated in th…
