Adiabatic regularization for spin-1/2 fields

2013

We extend the adiabatic regularization method to spin-1/2 fields. The ansatz for the adiabatic expansion for fermionic modes differs significantly from the WKB-type template that works for scalar modes. We give explicit expressions for the first adiabatic orders and analyze particle creation in de Sitter spacetime. As for scalar fields, the adiabatic method can be distinguished by its capability to overcome the UV divergences of the particle number operator. We also test the consistency of the extended method by working out the conformal and axial anomalies for a Dirac field in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetime, in exact agreement with those obtained from other renormalization…

Equivalence of Adiabatic and DeWitt-Schwinger renormalization schemes

2014

We prove that adiabatic regularization and DeWitt-Schwinger point-splitting provide the same result for the renormalized expectation values of the stress-energy tensor for spin-$1/2$ fields. This generalizes the equivalence found for scalar fields, which is here recovered in a different way. We also argue that the coincidence limit of the DeWitt-Schwinger proper time expansion of the two-point function exactly agrees with the analogous expansion defined by the adiabatic regularization method at any order (for both scalar and spin-$1/2$ fields). We also illustrate the power of the adiabatic method to compute higher order DeWitt coefficients in FLRW universes.

Running gravitational couplings, decoupling, and curved spacetime renormalization

2020

We propose to slightly generalize the DeWitt-Schwinger adiabatic renormalization subtractions in curved space to include an arbitrary renormalization mass scale $\mu$. The new predicted running for the gravitational couplings are fully consistent with decoupling of heavy massive fields. This is a somewhat improvement with respect to the more standard treatment of minimal (DeWitt-Schwinger) subtractions via dimensional regularization. We also show how the vacuum metamorphosis model emerges from the running couplings.

Adiabatic Cooling of Antiprotons

2011

Adiabatic cooling is shown to be a simple and effective method to cool many charged particles in a trap to very low temperatures. Up to 3 x 10(6) (p) over bar are cooled to 3.5 K-10(3) times more cold (p) over bar and a 3 times lower (p) over bar temperature than previously reported. A second cooling method cools (p) over bar plasmas via the synchrotron radiation of embedded (p) over bar (with many fewer (p) over bar than (p) over bar) in preparation for adiabatic cooling. No (p) over bar are lost during either process-a significant advantage for rare particles.

From Halo Effective Field Theory to the study of breakup and transfer reactions: reliably probing the halo structure of 11 Be and 15 C

2020

Abstract In this work we study one-neutron halo nuclei, and in particular 11Be and 15C, which can be seen as an inert core of 10Be or 14C plus a loosely bound neutron. During the last decades several transfer and breakup reactions involving these systems have been measured on different targets and energies. We study these processes using one single structure model for each nucleus applying the halo effective field theory (Halo EFT) at next-to-leading order NLO. The main parameters of this EFT are adjusted on nuclear-structure data and/or ab initio predictions. We model the transfer reaction within the Adiabatic Distorted Wave Approximation (ADWA) and the breakup process applying an eikonal …

Time-resolved photoabsorption in finite systems: A first-principles NEGF approach

2016

We describe a first-principles NonEquilibrium Green’s Function (NEGF) approach to time-resolved photoabsortion spectroscopy in atomic and nanoscale systems. The method is used to highlight a recently discovered dynamical correlation effect in the spectrum of a Krypton gas subject to a strong ionizing pump pulse. We propose a minimal model that captures the effect, and study the performance of time-local approximations versus time-nonlocal ones. In particular we implement the time-local Hartree-Fock and Markovian second Born (2B) approximation as well as the exact adiabatic approximation within the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory framework. For the time-nonlocal approximation we ins…

Arbitrary qudit gates by adiabatic passage

2013

We derive an adiabatic technique that implements the most general SU($d$) transformation in a quantum system of $d$ degenerate states, featuring a qudit. This technique is based on the factorization of the SU($d$) transformation into $d$ generalized quantum Householder reflections, each of which is implemented by a two-shot stimulated Raman adiabatic passage with appropriate static phases. The energy of the lasers needed to synthesize a single Householder reflection is shown to be remarkably constant as a function of $d$. This technique is directly applicable to a linear trapped ion system with $d+1$ ions. We implement the quantum Fourier transform numerically in a qudit with $d=4$ (defined…

On the renormalization of ultraviolet divergences in the inflationary angular power spectrum

2015

We revise the role of ultraviolet divergences of cosmological observables and the corresponding renormalization from a space-time perspective. We employ the two-point function of primordial perturbations generated during inflation to derive an analytic expression for the multipole coefficients Cl in the Sachs-Wolfe regime. We analyzethe ultraviolet behaviorand stress the fact that the standard result in the literature is equivalent to a renormalization of the two-point function at zeroth adiabatic order. We also argue that renormalization at second adiabatic order seems to be more appropriate from a physical point of view. This may change significantly the predictions for Cl, while maintain…

Attosecond control of dissociative ionization of O2molecules

2011

We demonstrate that dissociative ionization of O(2) can be controlled by the relative delay between an attosecond pulse train (APT) and a copropagating infrared (IR) field. Our experiments reveal a dependence of both the branching ratios between a range of electronic states and the fragment angular distributions on the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) to IR time delay. The observations go beyond adiabatic propagation of dissociative wave packets on IR-induced quasistatic potential energy curves and are understood in terms of an IR-induced coupling between electronic states in the molecular ion.

Ionization potential of Al6 and A17 as a function of temperature

1999

The temperature-depence of the ionization potential of Al6 and Al7 clusters is studied by using ab initio molecular dynamics. The threshold regions of theoretical photoionization eciency curves are ob- tained from the calculated ionization potential distributions by integration and the determined ionization potentials are compared with the experimental ones. Two important eects, which complicate the determin- ation of ionization potential from photoionization eciency curves, are observed: the thermal tail eect and the isomerization. Also a link between the adiabatic ionization potential and the threshold of the photoion- ization eciency curve is discussed. In the case of Al7, this often use…
