Osteochondritis of the hallux sesamoid bones.

2007

Osteochondritis of the sesamoid bones is an infrequent condition which may affect both the medial and lateral hallux sesamoids. Those cases refractory to conservative treatment can be satisfactorily solved by carrying out its surgical excision. We present a literature review about its causes, pathophysiology, the diagnostic methods and the treatments options.

An Analysis of Earthquakes Clustering Based on a Second-Order Diagnostic Approach

2009

A diagnostic method for space–time point process is here introduced and applied to seismic data of a fixed area of Japan. Nonparametric methods are used to estimate the intensity function of a particular space–time point process and on the basis of the proposed diagnostic method, second-order features of data are analyzed: this approach seems to be useful to interpret space–time variations of the observed seismic activity and to focus on its clustering features.

Objective, Noninvasive Evaluation of Velopharyngeal Function in Cleft and Noncleft Patients

1998

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate a new diagnostic method that provides an approach to noninvasive, objective measurement of velopharyngeal movement by acoustic determination of epipharyngeal volume changes with velopharyngeal muscle function. Design This was a case control study, using consecutive samples. Setting This study took place at the Cleft Palate Rehabilitation Center of the University of Mainz, Germany. Patients Subjects were 29 consecutive cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and 31 controls (21 patients with dysgnathia and 10 healthy volunteers). Intervention A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 milliseconds) of epipharyng…

In vivo study of different methods for diagnosing pit and fissure caries

2015

Background In recent years the early detection of such caries has gained importance, since it may avoid unnecessary dental tissue damage and allow minimally invasive dental treatment. A study is made of 5 systems for diagnosing caries: traditional visual and tactile methods, DIAGNOdent, VistaProof and CarieScan. Material and Methods A prospective study was made in the Department of Stomatology, Dental Pathology and Therapeutics Teaching unit of the University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain), involving the analysis of 32 teeth (molars or premolars of both arches scheduled for filling or for use as posts in dental bridges) in 28 patients. The following caries diagnostic methods were applied: vi…

Recent advances on nanomaterial based electrochemical and optical aptasensors for detection of cancer biomarkers

2018

Abstract Cancer is a real menace to all societies globally since it is the leading cause of premature mortality in men and women. The incidence of malignancies is enhancing as a result of plenty factors. Physically and economically concerns that occur in cancers patients cannot be neglected. However, current diagnostic methods and cure duration do not fulfill patients requirements. Therefore, it is essential to detect and diagnose cancer biomarkers as soon as possible and overcome the current burdens. Novel aptasensors is emerging as one of the most promising strategies for early recognition of cancer. Aptamers an artificial DNA or RNA sequences, possess plenty of merits such as easy produc…

Taenia asiatica: the Most Neglected Human Taenia and the Possibility of Cysticercosis

2013

Not only Taenia solium and Taenia saginata, but also Taenia asiatica infects humans. The last species is not included in the evaluation of the specificity of the immunodiagnostic techniques for taeniasis/cysticercosis. There is currently no specific immunodiagnostic method for T. asiatica available. Therefore, due to the fact that molecular techniques (the only tool to distinguish the 3 Taenia species) are normally not employed in routine diagnostic methods, the 2 questions concerning T. asiatica (its definite geographic distribution and its ability to cause human cysticercosis), remain open, turning T. asiatica into the most neglected agent of human taeniasis-cysticercosis.

A comprehensive use of ultrasound examination in infertility workup

2021

Considering the growing availability of ultrasound diagnostic methods in gynecology, its role in the infertility setting is increasing. In this review, we present an up-to-date ultrasound based diagnostic scheme in infertility workup comprising the evaluation of ovarian anatomy and function, uterine exploration, as well as tubal patency. The possibility of performing the vast majority of infertility diagnostics by ultrasound in the ambulatory settings is not only attractive and beneficial to patients, but also to health care system. Thus, it is vital for gynecologists to implement modern non-invasive ultrasound modalities in their everyday practice.

ABSTRACT Genit…

Vaccuuming method as a successful strategy in the diagnosis of active infestation by Pediculus humanus capitis

2020

ABSTRACT Most human epidemiological and clinical studies use visual inspection of the hair and scalp to diagnose Pediculus humanus capitis , however this method has low sensitivity to diagnose active infestations (presence of nymphs and adult lice). Vacuuming the hair and scalp has been used as a diagnostic method, but there are no previous data comparing its effectiveness with visual inspection. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overall infestation (nits and trophic stages), of active infestation by Pediculus humanus capitis , and to evaluate the effectiveness of vacuuming in comparison with the visual inspection. Visual inspection was performed by three examiners an…

[Oral capillaroscopy: a new diagnostic method].

2011

The morphological-functional study of microcirculation is of fundamental importance; in fact, the microvascular bed is directly involved both in autoimmune etiopathogenesis pathologies, and in acute and chronic inflammatory etiopathogenesis pathologies. Oral capillaroscopy is a very stimulating method for studying microcirculation, because of the possibility of studying small vessels in vivo by means of a microscope. Today, it is becoming more reliable thanks to the improvement of the observation tools (photography, videomicroscopy).
