Concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers

In this paper a study about concrete arch bridges built by lattice cantilevers is presented. Lattice cantilevers are partial structures composed of deck, arch, piers and provisional steel diagonals, organized as reticular cantilever girders, in order to build arch bridges without the use of centrings, supports or temporary towers. Characteristics of this construction methodology with its variants are explained together with their implications in the erection sequence. Glutamatergic projection from the nucleus incertus to the septohippocampal system

Abstract Recent findings support a relevant role of the nucleus incertus in the control of the hippocampal activity through the modulation of theta rhythm. Previous studies from our group have shown that this nucleus is a critical relay between reticularis pontis oralis and the medial septum/diagonal band, regarded as the main activator and the pacemaker of the hippocampal oscillations, respectively. Besides, the nucleus incertus is highly linked to activated states related to the arousal response. The neurotransmission of the nucleus incertus, however, remains uncertain. Abstract We build a metric space which is homeomorphic to a Cantor set but cannot be realized as the attractor of an iterated function system. We give also an example of a Cantor set K in R 3 such that every homeomorphism f of R 3 which preserves K coincides with the identity on K.
Composition as identity and plural Cantor's theorem

In this paper, I argue that the thesis of Composition as Identity blocks the plural version of Cantor’s Theorem, and that this in turn has implications for our use of Cantor’s theorem in metaphysics. As an example, I show how this result blocks a recent argument by Hawthorne and Uzquiano, and might be turned around to become an abductive argument for Composition as Identity
Analytic calculation of the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction within configuration-interaction and coupled-cluster theory

Schemes for the analytic calculation of the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction (DBOC) are formulated and implemented for use with general single-reference configuration-interaction and coupled-cluster wave function models. Calculations are reported to demonstrate the convergence of the DBOC with respect to electron-correlation treatment and basis set as well as to investigate the size-consistency error in configuration-interaction calculations of the DBOC. A critical assessment of methods for the determination of the shear stress amplitude in multiaxial fatigue criteria belonging to critical plane class

Abstract Multiaxial high cycle fatigue criteria based on the critical plane approach necessitate unambiguous definitions of the amplitude and mean value of the shear stress (τa and τm) acting on the material planes. Four of the existing definitions relate the values of τa and τm to a geometrical element of the curve described by the tip of the shear stress vector (curve Ψ), respectively, the radius of the Minimum Circumscribed Circle, the Longest Chord, the Longest Projection, the diagonal of the Maximum Rectangular Hull (MRH). Exceptional Configurations of Quantum Walks with Grover’s Coin

We study search by quantum walk on a two-dimensional grid using the algorithm of Ambainis, Kempe and Rivosh [AKR05]. We show what the most natural coin transformation -- Grover's diffusion transformation -- has a wide class of exceptional configurations of marked locations, for which the probability of finding any of the marked locations does not grow over time. This extends the class of known exceptional configurations; until now the only known such configuration was the "diagonal construction" by [AR08].
Numerical experiments with a parallel fast direct elliptic solver on Cray T3E

A parallel fast direct O(N log N) solver is shortly described for linear systems with separable block tridiagonal matrices. A good parallel scalability of the proposed method is demonstrated on a Cray T3E parallel computer using MPI in communication. Also, the sequential performance is compared with the well-known BLKTRI-implementation of the generalized. cyclic reduction method using a single processor of Cray T3E.

The sedimentation of a polydisperse suspension of small spherical particles dispersed in a viscous fluid, where particles belong to N species differing in size, can be described by a strongly coupled system of N scalar, nonlinear first-order conservation laws for the evolution of the volume fractions. The hyperbolicity of this system is a property of theoretical importance because it limits the range of validity of the model and is of practical interest for the implementation of numerical methods. An improved MSD-based method for PD defects classification

The new proposed method of pattern recognition is based on the application of Multi-resolution Signal Decomposition (MSD) technique of wavelet transform. This technique has showed off interesting properties in capturing the embedded horizontal, vertical and diagonal variations within an image obtained from the PD pattern in a separable form. This feature was exploited to identify in the PD pattern's MSD, relative at various family of partial discharge sources, some detail images typical of a single discharge phenomenon.
