The NA48 event-building PC farm

2003

The NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS aims to measure the parameter $\Re(\epsilon'/ \epsilon)$ of direct CP violation in the neutral kaon system with an accuracy of $2 \times 10^{-4}$. Based on the requirements of: \\\\ * high event rates (up to 10 kHz) with negligible dead time;\\ * support for a variety of detectors with very wide variation in the number of readout channels;\\ * data rates of up to 150 MByte/s sustained over the beam burst;\\ * level-3 filtering and remote data logging in the CERN computer center; \\\\ the collaboration has designed and built a modular pipelined data flow system with 40 MHz sampling rate. The architecture combines custom-designed components with commerciall…

The Argo YBJ daq system and the GRID based data transfer

2008

The Argo-YBJ experiment has now reached itsfinal design configuration. The detector system consists of a fullcoverage array (about 5800 square meters) of Resistive PlateChambers (RPCs). The throughput depends on the trigger rateand threshold. The DAQ system must be able to sustain a max-imum transfer rate of the order of 15 MB/s and a high peakdata flow. Data are read out using a typical front-end acquisitionchain built around a custom bus. Specialized electronics have beendesigned and dedicated software has been written to perform thistask. Data are sent to the online farm through a switch exploitinga gigabit ethernet protocol. A solution to transfer data from theYBJ laboratory to the labo…

On the strength of the U A (1) anomaly at the chiral phase transition in N f = 2 QCD

2016

We study the thermal transition of QCD with two degenerate light flavours by lattice simulations using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks. Temperature scans are performed at a fixed value of $N_t = (aT)^{-1}=16$, where $a$ is the lattice spacing and $T$ the temperature, at three fixed zero-temperature pion masses between 200 MeV and 540 MeV. In this range we find that the transition is consistent with a broad crossover. As a probe of the restoration of chiral symmetry, we study the static screening spectrum. We observe a degeneracy between the transverse isovector vector and axial-vector channels starting from the transition temperature. Particularly striking is the strong reduction of the split…

Muon Anomaly from Lepton Vacuum Polarization and The Mellin--Barnes Representation

2008

We evaluate, analytically, a specific class of eighth--order and tenth--order QED contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. They are generated by Feynman diagrams involving lowest order vacuum polarization insertions of leptons $l=e,\mu$, and $\tau$. The results are given in the form of analytic expansions in terms of the mass ratios $m_e/m_\mu$ and $m_\mu/m_\tau$. We compute as many terms as required by the error induced by the present experimental uncertainty on the lepton masses. We show how the Mellin--Barnes integral representation of Feynman parametric integrals allows for an easy analytic evaluation of as many terms as wanted in these expansions and how its underlyi…

Hybrid model of an inventer-induction motor system

1969

A model of the three-phase bridge inverter with a wide range of validity is proposed. This model can be used for the simulation of the inverter induction motor system on a hybrid computer or an analogue computer. In the latter case it is necessary to achieve a logical device which realizes the inverter model. After a block diagram for the simulation of the inverter induction motor system is illustrated as well as the circuital diagram of the device which simulates the inverter. Finally the authors describe the tests carried out in order to verify the validity of the inverter model and the correct operating of the device which simulates the inverter.

Dynamics of a minimal consumer network with bi -directional influence

2018

Abstract We study the dynamics of a model of interdependent consumer behavior defined by a family of two-dimensional noninvertible maps. This family belongs to a class of coupled logistic maps with different nonlinearity parameters and coupling terms that depend on one variable only. In our companion paper we considered the case of independent consumers as well as the case of uni-directionally connected consumers. The present paper aims at describing the dynamics in the case of a bi-directional connection. In particular, we investigate the bifurcation structure of the parameter plane associated with the strength of coupling between the consumers, focusing on the mechanisms of qualitative tr…

Patterns Reuse in the PASSI methodology

2003

Design patterns already proved successful in lowering the development time and number of errors of object-oriented software; now, they are, candidate to play a similar role in the MAS (multi-agent system) context. In this work we describe our experiences in the identification, production and application of patterns for agents. Some patterns are described together with the classification criteria and documentation approach we adopt. Upon them, we base a pattern reuse process that can be considered one of the distinguishing elements of the design methodology (PASSI) we use to develop MAS. Patterns can be applied to an existing agent or used to produce a new one with the support of a specific …

Gamma Vel cluster membership and IMF

2016

Understanding the properties of young open clusters, such as the Initial Mass Function (IMF), star formation history and dynamic evolution, is crucial to obtain reliable theoretical predictions of the mechanisms involved in the star formation process. We want to obtain a list, as complete as possible, of confirmed members of the young open cluster Gamma Velorum, with the aim of deriving general cluster properties such as the IMF. We used all available spectroscopic membership indicators within the Gaia-ESO public archive together with literature photometry and X-ray data and, for each method, we derived the most complete list of candidate cluster members. Then, we considered photometry, gra…

II: Differenzenplots oder Punktewolken - wann was anwenden?

2002

Sometimes the statistical comparison of diagnostic measurement methods or subsequent measurement series in the same individuals is based on bivariate scattergrams; correlation coefficients and linear regression lines are provided in addition. However, this strategy for data representation must be considered inappropriate, as soon as the measurement series under consideration show the same physical index (e.g. repeated measurement of the intraocular pressure [mm Hg] 2 and 4 weeks after glaucoma surgery). Such data can be handled by computation of the intraindividual difference of an individual's measurement. The resulting series of intraindividual deviations can then be analysed using standa…

Generalized person-by-person optimization in team problems with binary decisions

2008

In this paper, we extend the notion of person by person optimization to binary decision spaces. The novelty of our approach is the adaptation to a dynamic team context of notions borrowed from the pseudo-boolean optimization field as completely local-global or unimodal functions and sub- modularity. We also generalize the concept of pbp optimization to the case where the decision makers (DMs) make decisions sequentially in groups of m, we call it mbm optimization. The main contribution are certain sufficient conditions, verifiable in polynomial time, under which a pbp or an mbm optimization algorithm leads to the team-optimum. We also show that there exists a subclass of sub-modular team pr…
