On the Spectral Evolution of Cygnus X-2 along its Color-Color Diagram
2002
We report on the results of a broad band (0.1-200 keV) spectral study of Cyg X-2 using two BeppoSAX observations taken in 1996 and 1997, respectively, for a total effective on-source time of ~100 ks. The color-color (CD) and hardness-intensity (HID) diagrams show that the source was in the horizontal branch (HB) and normal branch (NB) during the 1996 and 1997 observation, respectively. Five spectra were selected around different positions of the source in the CD/HID, two in the HB and three in the NB. These spectra are fit to a model consisting of a disk blackbody, a Comptonization component, and two Gaussian emission lines at ~1 keV and ~6.6 keV, respectively. The addition of a hard power-…
Analyzing dynamical gluon mass generation
2007
We study the necessary conditions for obtaining infrared finite solutions from the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing the dynamics of the gluon propagator. The equation in question is set up in the Feynman gauge of the background field method, thus capturing a number of desirable features. Most notably, and in contradistinction to the standard formulation, the gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost contributions. Various subtle field-theoretic issues, such as renormalization group invariance and regularization of quadratic divergences, are briefly addressed. The infrared and ultraviolet properties of the obtained so…
The B0.5IVe CoRoT target HD 49330. I. Photometric analysis from CoRoT data
2009
International audience; Context: Be stars undergo outbursts producing a circumstellar disk from the ejected material. The beating of non-radial pulsations has been put forward as a possible mechanism of ejection. Aims: We analyze the pulsational behavior of the early B0.5IVe star HD 49330 observed during the first CoRoT long run towards the Galactical anticenter (LRA1). This Be star is located close to the lower edge of the beta Cephei instability strip in the HR diagram and showed a 0.03 mag outburst during the CoRoT observations. It is thus an ideal case for testing the aforementioned hypothesis. Methods: We analyze the CoRoT light curve of HD 49330 using Fourier methods and non-linear le…
Phase diagram and structure of colloid-polymer mixtures confined between walls
2006
The influence of confinement, due to flat parallel structureless walls, on phase separation in colloid-polymer mixtures, is investigated by means of grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Ultra-thin films, with thicknesses between $D=3-10$ colloid diameters, are studied. The Asakura-Oosawa model [J. Chem. Phys. 22, 1255 (1954)] is used to describe the particle interactions. To simulate efficiently, a ``cluster move'' [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 3253 (2004)] is used in conjunction with successive umbrella sampling [J. Chem. Phys. 120, 10925 (2004)]. These techniques, when combined with finite size scaling, enable an accurate determination of the unmixing binodal. Our results show that the critica…
Coexistence Curve Singularities at Critical End Points
1997
We report an extensive Monte Carlo study of critical end point behaviour in a symmetrical binary fluid mixture. On the basis of general scaling arguments, singular behaviour is predicted in the diameter of the liquid-gas coexistence curve as the critical end point is approached. The simulation results show clear evidence for this singularity, as well as confirming a previously predicted singularity in the coexistence chemical potential. Both singularities should be detectable experimentally.
A dispersion relation for the pion-mass dependence of hadron properties
2010
We present a dispersion relation in the pion-mass squared, which static quantities (nucleon mass, magnetic moment, etc.) obey under the assumption of analyticity in the entire complex $m_\pi^2$ plane modulo a cut at negative $m_\pi^2$ associated with pion production. The relation is verified here in a number of examples of nucleon and $\Delta$-isobar properties computed in chiral perturbation theory up to order $p^3$. We outline a method to obtain relations for other mass-dependencies, and illustrate it on a two-loop example.
Study of the Temporal Behavior of 4U 1728−34 as a Function of Its Position in the Color‐Color Diagram
2001
We study the timing properties of the bursting atoll source 4U 1728-34 as a function of its position in the X-ray color-color diagram. In the island part of the color-color diagram (corresponding to the hardest energy spectra), the power spectrum of 4U 1728-34 shows several features such as a band-limited noise component present up to a few tens of Hz, a low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (LFQPO) at frequencies between 20 and 40 Hz, a peaked noise component around 100 Hz, and one or two QPOs at kHz frequencies. In addition to these, in the lower banana (corresponding to softer energy spectra) we also find a very low frequency noise (VLFN) component below ∼1 Hz. In the upper banana (co…
Intermittent-Type Chaos in Nonsinusoidal Driven Oscillators
2000
The intermittent-type chaos occurring in rf- and dc- nonsinusoidal driven oscillators is investigated analytically and numerically. The attention is focused on a general class of oscillators in which the total potential VRP(,r) is the Remoissenet-Peyrard potential which has constant amplitude and is 2π-periodic in , and whose shape can be varied as a function of parameter r ( |r| < 1). A simple physical model for calculating analytically the Melnikov function is proposed. The onset of chaos is studied through an analysis of the phase space, a construction of the bifurcation diagram and a computation of the Lyapunov exponent. The parameter regions of chaotic behaviour predicted by the theore…
Dynamics of the labyrinthine patterns at the diffuse phase boundaries
2001
The phase diagram of a magnetic colloid in a Hele-Shaw cell is calculated. As a function of the magnetic field strength, of the concentration and of the layer thickness the magnetic colloid can find itself in a stripe phase, the hexagonal phase or in an unmodulated state. Those results allow to interpret experiments observing the transformation of a labyrinthine pattern into a hexagonal structure. This possibility is confirmed directly by the numerical simulation presented here and showing the transformation of the labyrinthine pattern into the hexagonal structure.
Comment on "High-pressure phases of group-II difluorides: Polymorphism and superionicity"
2018
Nelson et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 054118 (2017)] recently have reported first-principles calculations on the behaviour of group-II difluorides (BeF$_{2}$, MgF$_{2}$, and CaF$_{2}$) under high-pressure and low- and high-temperature conditions. The calculations were based on ab initio random structure searching and the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA). Here, we point out that, despite the of inestimable value of such calculations at high-pressure and low-temperature conditions, the high-$P$ high-$T$ phase diagram proposed by Nelson et al. for CaF$_{2}$ neither is in qualitative agreement with the results of previous ab initio molecular dynamics simulations nor with the existing corps of exper…
