The chemistry of death--Adipocere degradation in modern graveyards.
2015
The formation of adipocere slows further decomposition and preserves corpses for decades or even centuries. This resistance to degradation is a serious problem, especially with regard to the reuse of graves after regular resting times. We present results from an exhumation series in modern graveyards where coffins from water-saturated earth graves contained adipocere embedded in black humic material after resting times of about 30 years. Based on the assumption that this humic material resulted from in situ degradation of adipocere, its presence contradicts the commonly held opinion that adipocere decomposition only occurs under aerobic conditions. To test our hypothesis, we collected black…
Determination of χ from liquid-liquid phase data in ternary polymer systems (solvent/polymer/polymer) with hydrogen bonding
2008
Two different models accounting for the dependences of χ and g interaction parameters on both temperature and composition have been applied to different ternary polymer systems (TPS) solvent(1)/polymer(2)/polymer(3). The ana- lyzed TPS have consisted on ten different polymer mixtures in chloroform as common solvent that can specifically interact via hydrogen bond. Experimental ternary phase diagrams determined by liquid chromatography were taken from literature. The application of the two models to the experimental data have served to obtain χij and gij interaction parameters for all the binary ij (ij = 12, 13, 23) interactions established between the three components of the system, with si…
Detection of the liquid ? liquid demixing by differential scanning calorimetry
1983
From theoretical considerations it is concluded that the demixing temperatures of moderately concentrated polymer solutions should manifest themselves in a change of the slope of the corresponding DSC trace; the effects are expected to suffice for detection by means of the commercially available dual furnace instrument DSC-2C from Perkin-Elmer.
Effects of pressure and of thermal history on the structural phase transition of KCN
1992
The cubic-noncubic structural phase transition of a KCN single crystal is studied as a function of thermal history and of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar. The standard sequence of phases is cubic-monoclinic-orthorhombic on cooling and orthorhombic-cubic on heating. The monoclinic phase is also absent in first cooling runs at low pressures (p≦250 bar). The width of the monoclinic field inp, T phase diagram is increased in second cooling runs. The effects are discussed in terms of a martensitic transformation behavior and random strain fields.
Modelling Monomer/Disc Composites Phase Behaviour
2012
Summary: A model developed by Balazs' group to explain the phase behaviour of polymer/clay composites is extended to obtain an expression for the free energy of polymer/thin disc mixtures. Phase diagrams for monomer/disc mixtures are built by minimizing the free energy and calculating the chemical potentials of the three system components. Via the comparison of the diagrams, it is studied the effects of nanodisc size and interaction parameters on mixture stability and attained morphology. The performed predictions between monomers and discs give criteria that advance the properties of the mixture. Changes in monomer concentration and interaction parameters provide a means to prevent van der…

Role of Solvent Compatibility in the Phase Behavior of Binary Solutions of Weakly Associating Multivalent Polymers
2021
AbstractCondensate formation of biopolymer solutions, prominently those of various intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), is determined by “sticky” interactions between associating residues, multivalently present along the polymer backbone. Using a ternary mean field “stickers-and-spacers” model, we demonstrate that if sticker association is of the order of a few times the thermal energy, a delicate balance between specific binding and non-specific polymer-solvent interactions gives rise to a particularly rich ternary phase behavior under physiological circumstances. For a generic system represented by a solution comprising multi-associative scaffold and client polymers, the difference i…

Phase diagrams were calculated for flowing solutions of polystyrene in trans-decahydronaphthalene assuming that the energy (Es) stored in the sheared state has to be added to the Gibbs energy of mixing; Es is computed from viscometric data (flow curves). The resulting phase diagrams exhibit two maxima in most of the cases instead of only one for the stagnant solutions. A comparison with experimental data (Part 1) shows that the calculated demixing behaviour agrees well for moderate shear rates and concentrations of the polymer. Deviations in the semidilute region, particularly for higher values, are a consequence of the fact that so far no reliable theoretical relation has been given for th…
Phases and phase transitions of (NaCl)1?x(NaCN)x
1985
(NaCl)1−x(NaCN)x mixed crystals with CN-concentrationsx of 0.87, 0.76, 0.71 and 0.65 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Apart from the cubic room temperature phase, a rhombohedral and an orthorhombic phase have been identified. In addition a glass state has been observed which is characterized by a strong broadening of the cubic powder lines. The phase diagram shows a wide coexistence gap between the non-cubic phases and the glass state.
Phases and phase transitions in the mixed molecular system (NaCN)1x(KCN)x
1990
The phase diagram of (NaCN)1−x(KCN)x was examined by neutron powder diffraction in the temperature range 5K ≦T≦300 K. Several non-cubic low-temperature phases were identified for concentrationsx<xc1=0.15 andx≧xc2=0.89. Lattice parameters and ferroelastic deformations were determined from the observed powder patterns. The phase transformations were characterized following the temperature dependence of the appropriate order parameters.
