"Photonic lantern" spectral filters in multi-core fibre

Fiber Bragg gratings are written across all 120 single-mode cores of a multi-core optical Fiber. The Fiber is interfaced to multimode ports by tapering it within a depressed-index glass jacket. The result is a compact multimode "photonic lantern" filter with astrophotonic applications. The tapered structure is also an effective mode scrambler.

We report progress towards multimode (MM) fibre filters for suppressing the OH emission that hinders ground-based observation of the early Universe. Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) can filter these narrow spectral lines in single-mode (SM) fibres [1]. Implementing them in MM fibres well-matched to astronomical instruments requires transitions between the MM fibre and several SM fibres [2]. Such hand-crafted “photonic lanterns” require many identical FBGs to be made and spliced in place. Instead we are pursuing the idea in multicore (MC) fibres, Fig. 1(a). A new sample of large angular size radio galaxies I. The radio data

We present a new sample of 84 large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Radio sources with declination above +60 degrees, total flux density greater than 100 mJy at 1.4 GHz and angular size larger than 4 arcmin have been selected and observed with the VLA at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz. The radio observations attempt to confirm the large angular size sources and to isolate the core emission for optical identification. In this paper, the first of a series of three, we present radio maps of 79 sources from the sample and discuss the effects of the selection criteria in the final sample. 37 radio galaxies belong to the class of giants, of which 22 are reported in this paper …
The broad-line radio galaxy J2114+820

In the frame of the study of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, we have made radio observations of J2114+820, a low power radio galaxy with an angular size of 6'. Its radio structure basically consists of a prominent core, a jet directed in north-west direction and two extended S-shaped lobes. We have also observed the optical counterpart of J2114+820, a bright elliptical galaxy with a strong unresolved central component. The optical spectrum shows broad emission lines. We have constructed a new sample of 84 large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Radio sources with declination above +60°, total flux density greater than 100 mJy at 1.4 GHz and angular size larger then 4′ have been selected and observed with the VLA at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz. A number of peculiar radio galaxies have been discovered, of which we present here results on J1835+620, J2114+820 and J2157+664.

Abstract Karl Reinhold Kupffer (1872–1935), an outstanding botanist and plant ecologist, took the initiative that led to the establishment of the first nature reserve in Latvia, on Moricsala Island in 1912. The reserve provided an excellent reference area for natural hemiboreal woodland for future generations. There have been very few studies on the dynamics of natural broadleaved forest in Europe, probably owing to lack of primeval forests of this type. Abstract The Heidelberg heavy ion test storage ring TSR started operation in May 1988. The lifetimes of the ion beams observed in the first experiments can be explained by interactions with the residual gas. Multiple Coulomb scattering, single Coulomb scattering, electron capture and electron stripping are the relevant processes. Electron cooling of ions as heavy as O 8+ has been observed for the first time. With increasing particle number, the longitudinal Schottky noise spectrum becomes dominated by collective waves for cooled beams, allowing a determination of velocities of sound. Development of an MeV ion beam lithography system in Jyväskylä

Abstract A lithographic facility for writing patterns with ion beams from cyclotron beams is under development for the Jyvaskyla cyclotron. Instead of focusing and deflecting the beam with electrostatic and magnetic fields a different approach is used. Here a small rectangular beam spot is defined by the shadow of a computer-controlled variable aperture in close proximity to the sample. This allows parallel exposure of rectangular pattern elements of 5–500 μm side with protons up to 6 MeV and heavy ions (20Ne, 85Kr) up to few 100 MeV. Collimators are widely used to define MeV ion beams. Recent studies have shown the capability of combinations of collimators and lenses to define beams of MeV ions with sub-100 nanometre dimensions. Such nanometre beams have potential applications in MeV ion beam lithography, which is the only maskless technique capable of producing extremely high aspect ratio micro- and nano-structrures, as well as in high resolution MeV ion beam based imaging. The ion scattering from the collimator-edges can be a resolution restricting factor in these applications. OBJECTIVES To assess reproducibility and accuracy of left ventricular output (LVO) quantifications in neonates, when left ventricular outflow tract diameter (LVOTD) was measured at the hinges of the aortic valve (AV), at the aortic sinus (AS), and at the sinotubular junction (STJ). METHODS This was an observational study. In the first cohort of very preterm neonates, we assessed intraobserver and interobserver repeatability of LVOTD measured at the AV, AS, and STJ and of the corresponding LVO.
