Cutting performance and indentation behaviour of diamond films on Co-cemented tungsten carbide

Abstract Diamond films were grown by Hot Filament Chemical Vapour Deposition (HFCVD) on differently pretreated ISO-grade K10 cemented carbide (WC-5.8 wt.%Co) cutting inserts. Etching with diluted HNO3 and surface roughening by Murakami's reagent were used as substrate pretreatments. The adhesion of the films was evaluated by indentation tests. In order to obtain a reliable estimation of the adhesion by the slope of the crack radius–indentation load curves, a careful SEM measurement of the crack lengths was performed. Abstract A solid-matrix-embedded spherical nanoparticle has acoustic vibrational frequencies which are shifted and damped relative to modes of a free sphere. Not only the longitudinal plane wave acoustic impedances, but also the Poisson ratios of nanoparticle and matrix are important in determining the Q-factor of the “breathing” mode, for which frequencies and Q-factors with different material combinations are presented. Optically detected magnetic resonances of nitrogen-vacancy ensembles inC13-enriched diamond

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the optically detected magnetic resonance signals for ensembles of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in a $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ isotopically enriched single-crystal diamond. We observe four broad transition peaks with superimposed sharp features at zero magnetic field and study their dependence on an applied magnetic field. A theoretical model that reproduces all qualitative features of these spectra is developed. Understanding the magnetic-resonance spectra of NV centers in an isotopically enriched diamond is important for emerging applications in nuclear magnetic resonance.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are nowadays intensively studied composites due to their excellent gas barrier properties and biocompatibility. Influence of titanium-substrate roughness on Ca–P–O thin films grown by atomic layer deposition

Abstract Amorphous Ca–P–O films were deposited on titanium substrates using atomic layer deposition, while maintaining a uniform Ca/P pulsing ratio of 6/1 with varying number of atomic layer deposition cycles starting from 10 up to 208. Prior to film deposition the titanium substrates were mechanically abraded using SiC abrasive paper of 600, 1200, 2000 grit size and polished with 3 μm diamond paste to obtain surface roughness R rms values of 0.31 μm, 0.26 μm, 0.16 μm, and 0.10 μm, respectively. Spectroscopic 2D-tomography: Residual pressure and strain around mineral inclusions in diamonds

We have studied high-pressure inclusions (Ca-silicates, coesite, graphite) in three large diamonds, one from the Kankan district, Guinea, and the other two from the Panda kimberlite, Ekati diamond mines, Canada. Using the in situ point-by-point mapping technique with a confocal Raman system, the mineralogy of the inclusions, as well as their area distribution pattern ( e.g. , of different Ca-silicate phases) and their order-disorder distribution pattern (shown for graphite/disordered carbon), were determined.
