Soluble-protein and antigenic heterogeneity in axenic Blastocystis hominis isolates: pathogenic implications.

The protein profile and the antigenic cross-reactivity of 18 axenic isolates of Blastocystis hominis obtained from symptomatic patients with chronic diarrhea (14 isolates) showing no evidence of parasitic etiology and from patients with acute diarrhea attributable in 2 cases to Salmonella spp. were analyzed. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of soluble proteins showed the existence of a common profile composed of 31 bands, with molecular weights ranging between 24 and >200 kDa, and minor differences in the proteins of 149, 118, 106, 50, 48, 47, and 30 kDa. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) has been the treatment of choice for colorectal carcinoma with an overall response rate of about 20%. Recent studies have shown that folate (LV) can increase 5-FU therapeutic efficacy, achieving about a 40% response rate without a clear impact on survival. Cisplatinum (CDDP) is usually inactive in colorectal carcinoma, but the association with 5-FU results in a synergistic antineoplastic effect. A phase I-II study was done to assess the maximally tolerated dose (MTD) of CDDP in association with 5-FU + LV. Treatment of 11 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia with interferon-alpha-2C and low-dose cytosine arabinoside

Abstract Patients with Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and on interferon (IFN)-α-2c treatment for at least two months were entered in the present pilot study. IFN-α treatment was maintained identically and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) was added at monthly cycles of 10 mg/m 2 /day for ten days subcutaneously. In the case of a leukocyte nadir above 10 G/1, the Ara-C dose was increased to 20 mg/m 2 /day for 10 days per month. Ten of the eleven patients entered in this study were evaluable for toxicity and response. They received a total of 87 IFN-α/Ara-C cycles (3–14/patient). It is uncertain whether gastrointestinal (GI) infection caused by viral and bacterial pathogens may predispose to gastrointestinal acute Graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD-GI) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-HSCT). We investigated the potential association between detection of enteropathogenic viruses or bacteria in stools and subsequent occurrence of aGvHD-GI in a cohort of 121 allo-HSCT patients. Accumulated safety data of micafungin in therapy and prophylaxis in fungal diseases

To define better the safety profile of micafungin, an analysis of micafungin clinical trial safety data was undertaken.Adverse event data were pooled worldwide from 17 clinical efficacy and safety studies. Adverse events were coded using the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities version 5.0.In the pooled clinical trial data set, 3028 patients received at least one dose of micafungin. The mean age of patients was 41.4 years; with 296 (9.8%) children (16 years) and 387 (12.8%) elderly patients (≥ 65 years). Humoral immune response to rotavirus NSP4 enterotoxin in Spanish children.

The rotavirus non-structural protein 4 (NSP4) has been shown to play a crucial role in rotavirus-induced diarrhea, acting as a viral enterotoxin. It has also been demonstrated that antibody to NSP4 can reduce the severity of rotavirus-induced diarrhea in newborn mice. Two recombinant baculoviruses, expressing the NSP4 protein from the SA11 and Wa rotavirus strains, genotypes A and B, respectively, were used to produce and purify these glycoproteins, which were applied as antigen in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to test the specific antibody response to NSP4 in human sera. Prevalence and genetic diversity of Aichi virus strains in stool samples from community and hospitalized patients.

ABSTRACT Aichi virus has been proposed as a causative agent of gastroenteritis. A total of 457 stool specimens from children hospitalized with acute diarrhea and 566 stool specimens from adults and children involved in 110 gastroenteritis outbreaks were screened for the presence of Aichi virus by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) amplification of the genomic region of the 3C and 3D (3CD) nonstructural proteins. Our results show a low incidence of Aichi virus in pediatric samples and the existence of mixed infections with other microbiological agents in some cases.
