European Politics of Food Origin. A Semiotic Analysis of Geographical Indications

This chapter investigates the relationship between food products and origin places within the European Union food policies. In the 1990s, the EU established a Geographical Indication (GI) system, constituted of a set of food quality brands and a legal framework for food, wine and spirits. This system, defined as a sui generis model by insiders, entails a strong EU government participation in the typical food symbolic and material modelling. The sui generis model establishes a government monopoly on the place-based labels registration and institutes an atypical kind of intellectual property based on geographic marks. Abstract Background & Aims Advances in direct‐acting antiviral treatment of HCV have reinvigorated public health initiatives aimed at identifying affected individuals. We evaluated the possible impact of only diagnosed and linked‐to‐care individuals on overall HCV burden estimates and identified a possible strategy to achieve the WHO targets by 2030. Methods Using a modelling approach grounded in Italian real‐life data of diagnosed and treated patients, different linkage‐to‐care scenarios were built to evaluate potential strategies in achieving the HCV elimination goals. Medikamentu izraisīti aknu bojājumi (DILI) ir reti sastopama medikamentu vai augu un uztura bagātinātāju produktu blakne. Vairākos pētījumos pierādīts gadījumu skaita pieaugums pēdējo gadu desmitu laikā un nesamērīgi liels ar augu un uztura bagātinātāju produktiem saistīto gadījumu skaita pieaugums. Lai gan DILI ir ļoti reti, tas ir viens no galvenajiem akūtas aknu mazspējas (ALF) cēloņiem. Patoģenēze nav pilnībā skaidra un pagaidām nav pieejami specifiski diagnostikas marķieri. Šie faktori kopā ar lielu skaitu etioloģisko aspektu un dažādām izpausmēm apgrūtina DILI diagnostiku. Abstract In Sicily, the increasing scarcity of good-quality waters is spreading irrigation with saline–sodic waters, thus enhancing the risk of soil secondary salinization and sodication. Background The control of emergence and spread of infectious diseases depends critically on the details of the genetic makeup of pathogens and hosts, their immunological, behavioral and ecological traits, and the pattern of temporal and spatial contacts among the age/stage-classes of susceptible and infectious host individuals. Resumen Un grupo de expertos convocado por la Sociedad Espanola de Arteriosclerosis (SEA) se ha encargado de actualizar el documento de la SEA sobre las indicaciones de los inhibidores de PCSK9 (iPCSK9) en la practica clinica publicadas en 2016. Esta actualizacion es necesaria porque en el periodo transcurrido hasta la actualidad se han publicado los resultados de los ensayos clinicos realizados a gran escala con iPCSK9 que demuestran que, ademas de su alta potencia para disminuir el colesterol aterogenico, disminuyen el riesgo de presentar episodios de enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerotica en los pacientes con enfermedad tanto estable como reciente, y con un alto grado de seguridad.
